TEAM HISTORY
Water Polo at Loomis Chaffee dates back to the late-70's when Coach Bob Hartman
created one of the first high school programs in New England. This co-ed team
eventually split into girls and boys varsity programs in the mid -90's with both teams
having consistent success in their respective leagues. The Pelican's won the New
England Prep School Championship Tournament in 1994 and 1996, finished second in
1999, 2002, and 2003 and third in 2001.

2010 SEASON
Coming off of a 2009 campaign that ended with at 1-15 record, the Pelicans had reason to
be optimistic for a more competitive 2010 season. Key returning players from last year’s
team, juniors Addison Wright and Sam Broda along with captain Rob Carroll and a large
group of seniors including Will DeLaMater, Dan Kang, Nick Fainlight and Kyle
Ruddock formed the nucleus for the varsity. In an early season scrimmage against
Williston the team played quite well, and while games in the opening weeks of the
regular season led to a 0- 5 record (losses to Andover, Deerfield, Choate, Suffield and
Greenwich High), the team was competitive and the quality of the water polo was
noticeably improving. Back to back victories over Hopkins and Williston broke the ice
for the Pelicans, and while the boys struggled to play a cohesive game against Exeter, the
team rallied with three straight wins over Hopkins, Canterbury and Brunswick. In the
Brunswick contest, the Pelicans discovered a higher level of play then they had achieved
in years. A disappointing loss at Suffield on Parent’s Weekend was followed by a very
well played and competitive defeat at the hands of #1 ranked Deerfield, these games set
the stage for a showdown with Hotchkiss where the Pelicans needed a win to preserve the
chance for a birth in the post season. In a tightly contested duel with the Bearcats,
Loomis twice rallied from four goals down to narrow the margin to one, but were unable
to force the game into overtime. Final score: Hotchkiss 13 - Loomis 12. Without
standout rookie goalie Ryan Shelby in the cage against Choate, the Pelicans took perhaps
their worst beating of the season down in Wallingford. But with two more good days of
work, goalies Will Bogle ‘12 and Matt Weicker ‘11 ably shut down the Williston
Wildcats as the team played their most elegant water polo of the year going 8 for 10 on
power plays in route to a 12-9 season ending victory. A huge thanks to Jack Mahoney
’10 for his generous commitment of time and energy working with the boys this fall and
for the enthusiasm of the huge class of seniors who worked so diligently to push the

program to higher level of competitiveness. Now it’s up to juniors Addison Wright, Sam
Broda, Will Bogle, Jake Bosee and Jamil Hashmi to see if they can sustain the
momentum and carry the program even further.
BOYS VARSITY WATER POLO 2010
Coming off a difficult 1-­‐15 2009 campaign, the 2010 season saw the Pelicans return
to competitiveness within the prep school polo world. Returning sixteen seniors
and a number of key starters, the team found its footing quickly in a strong opening
game against Andover and put up a better than expected fight against league #2
Choate early in the season. The team’s overall lack of swimming speed kept it from
pushing through to post season play, but convincing wins over Williston, Hopkins
and Brunswick along with a closely contested loss to Hotchkiss and a competitive
game with league champs Deerfield were indicators of just how far the team
progressed. The numbers speak volumes. The 2010 squad scored twice as many
goals as compared to 2009, while the defense yield 30 % fewer, if those trends can
continue next year it should be a very exciting season down at Hedges Pool.
Congratulations to the team and thank you to all the seniors who made every
practice fun and productive.
2010 Awards:
Most Improved: Ryan Shelby. After a year of playing in the field for the JV, Ryan, a
sophomore, eagerly jumped into the cage during preseason and almost immediately
found himself a varsity starter. You never would guess that the poised, intelligent,
vocal shot blocker was in his rookie season. Ryan averaged 11 saves a game and
had a 53% save percentage – he’ll be a force within the league for the next two
years.
MVP: Addison Wright. In just his second season of water polo, Addison continued
his emergence as one of the most exciting and determined athletes in the league.
His team leading, 40 goals and 33 assists meant he was involved in half of the team’s
successful offensive opportunities. Addison was also a fierce competitor on defense
where he led the team with 55 steals and often marked the opposing team’s biggest
threat. We can’t wait to see what he’ll achieve in his senior season.
Coaches Award: Rob Carroll. Rob returned this fall ready to compete and
contribute. Improved swimming speed, endurance and confidence enabled Rob to
dramatically boost his scoring production and he was a key contributor on the
team’s highly successful power play. As a captain, Rob’s energy and commitment
fueled the program’s improvement.

Sarah Patrick
Senior captains Lydia and Sarah have run cross country all four years at Loomis
Chaffee, and their progress during that time has been staggering. As hard-­‐working,
earnest freshmen, Lydia was ranked 18th on the team, and Sarah qualified to run at
New Englands (only 19 from each school can run) because she had her racing spikes
with her when two of her faster teammates fell ill on race day. Through hard
training, diligent summer preparation, patience, and perseverance, these two young
women improved steadily and dramatically. This year they were among the four top
runners on the team, any of whom could (and did) run No. 1 for the team on any
given day. As a freshman, Lydia's best time on the home course (5 kilometers) was
25:10. This year, she ran 20:09 at home. Sarah's best home time her freshman year
was 25:26, and this year she ran 20:35. The fact that both Lydia and Sarah grew into
team leaders is not as surprising as their huge drops in race times. Lydia always has
been a hard worker and a serious cross country team member. She always has led
by example in her preparation; her gutsy, all-­‐out racing; and her dedication to the
team. Sarah, too, has worked hard, set goals, and strived to reaching them since her
very first day on the team. Conscientious and fully committed to the team, Sarah also
is a sweet mother duck to her teammates. The team's wonderful tone and ability to
over-­‐achieve is thanks in very large part to the leadership and sweat equity of
captain Lydia Heinrichs and captain Sarah Patrick.

Rookie of the Year
Caitlin Farrell
We knew Caitlin was a good runner when she arrived on campus as a freshman this
year. What we didn't know was how good, and she wasted no time in showing us
just how talented she is, establishing herself among the top four runners on the
varsity squad from the first race. We also didn't know but soon discovered that
Caitlin has a steely, no-­‐nonsense approach to racing. Running in the No. 4 position in
the Choate-­‐Deerfield double dual meet, she had coaches and fans telling her for the
entire race that she had a pack of Choate runners and a pack of Deerfield runners
bearing down on her. Caitlin acknowledged the situation and calmly held them all
off, ensuring two team wins that day. One week later, Caitlin had a break-­‐through
race against Greenwich at home. After a solid first mile, she chased down the leader
from Greenwich in the second mile, and the two dueled to the finish. The Greenwich
star finished just a stride ahead of Caitlin, and Caitlin's tenacious racing brought her
under the 20-­‐minute milestone with a time of 19:49. LCXC looks forward to three
more years of Caitlin Farrell thrills.

BOYS VARSITY FOOTBALL 2010
The varsity football team had a solid season this fall as it continues to build itself
into a New England power. The young men reported to preseason practice with a great
attitude and were prepared to get to work with a rigorous preseason regimen.
The team responded well, bonded quickly, and showed promise by playing well in
several scrimmages. The season started on a high note, with our first ever win against
Andover, breaking a fifteen game winless streak against the Big Blue. The Pelicans
continued to have success on the field with victories against Hotchkiss, Trinity Pawling
and a huge Parents’ Weekend win over Avon Old Farms. This season’s 4-4 record also
represents the first non-losing season since 1996.
The team relied heavily upon senior captains Aaron Barret, Caleb Harris and
Anthony Knowlton to bring several new players together with those returning in the
program. Seniors Brandon Brito, James Kavanagh, Varun Konanki, Michael Moore,
James Yun and Nick Szczerbickyj gave their all to the team during their senior seasons,
and post-graduates Sam Artenstein, Drew Ghio, Jared Roberts, Chai Reece, Danny
Farley, Ladarius Drew and Sherman Peoples added depth, skill and experience to the
team. The Pelicans also relied on several juniors and sophomores who played pivotal
roles this year. The future of the program looks bright! The coaches would like to thank
the seniors for their dedication to their teammates. Thanks too, to the parents, the tailgate
committee, the administration and support staff at Loomis Chaffee School, our wives,
significant others, friends and families for all of their support this fall.
Awards
MVP – Chai Reece - Chai embodied everything that one could ask for in a football
player. He is very intelligent, has an outstanding work ethic, is extremely tough, and is a
tremendous competitor. Chai injured his hamstring in preseason camp and played
through a great deal of pain all season. However, it did not keep him from intercepting
eight balls this fall and scoring four touchdowns in the Hotchkiss game alone. It is tough
to determine which was his most impressive performance of the season, a kick off return
against Deerfield, in which he reinjured his hamstring, and then proceeded to outrun the
Deerfield team while holding on to his injured thigh, or after not being able to practice
for the next week, to come back to play against Avon Old Farms the next Saturday. In
that game he had multiple tackles, defended several passes, an interception, and the game
winning touchdown catch with little time left on the clock.
Coaches Award – Caleb Harris – Caleb decided to dedicate himself to football after he
finished his freshman year. This was not an easy decision, considering he was a member
of a team that had one victory that year and had only three in the previous four years.
However, it was a decision that set him apart from others, because he wanted to
accomplish something great. The next season, as a sophomore, Caleb played all but
seven snaps as a 180-pound lineman on a team that did not win a game. Caleb continued
to dedicate himself to football. As a junior, Caleb was 195 pounds; he was faster and
stronger and was asked to change positions to linebacker for the good of the team. Caleb
did not complain, he worked hard every day, and helped lead his team to two victories.

However, one of the victories was not a common one, it was the defending New England
Champion, Hotchkiss and it broke a long Loomis losing streak (It was also Hotchkiss’
only loss during the regular season that year.). As a senior, and now captain, Caleb has
continued to work tirelessly in the weight room, and came to preseason at a lean 215
pounds. Caleb again proved to be the consummate team player as he moved back to
defensive end, his natural position, as well as playing center and anchoring the offensive
line. Caleb’s dedication to football, his teammates and to Loomis has been instrumental
in the revival of the Loomis football program. Caleb has accomplished exactly what he
committed himself to four years ago.
Unsung Hero – James Yun - James’ contributions to the football program have been
tremendous. He has accepted every role that he has been asked to fulfill over the past
three years without complaint and he has executed them to the best of his ability. James
has been completely committed to the football program and has been an extremely
valuable member of the team. First and foremost, offensive linemen get very little
recognition, unless they miss a block. James is an offensive lineman; he does not get to
touch the ball and during games he is asked to block opponents who are often 10 inches
taller and 60 pounds heavier than he is. During practice, not only did he have his
offensive responsibilities, but we also asked him to play scout team, so that our defensive
lineman would get a realistic look at our opponent’s offense. Not only did James do as
we asked, but he always worked to improve his play and he took advantage of every
opportunity that he had to become a better athlete. James is the epitome of an “Unsung
Hero.” He never knew what his role would be week to week, but he was always ready to
perform, setting his own personal glory aside for the success of the team. James set an
example this fall for all athletes to follow.

SUMMARY
With a team that typically runs 60-strong, leadership is vital, and every
single one of our seniors steps up to lead in the Pelican harriers. This year,
in addition to sharing leadership with their fellow seniors in daily practices
and particularly in our intra-squad mock meets, our elected tri-captains—
Michael Curtin, Ryan Palm, and Alec Schwab—have distinguished themselves as
some of the best leaders LCXC has ever seen. Each of them is honored with
an award tonight:
Michael, who is one of just three four-year Pelican runners, we recognize as
LCXC’s greatest ambassador and the Pelican who best represents all that
LCXC is about. This year, we honor him with the Founders League All-League
Award, and we thank him for all the time and energy he has invested in not
only his own cross country successes, but also those of his teammates and of,
too, his Founders League competitors.
Ryan, we recognize as the team’s incomparably Most Valuable Runner. In
addition to running number one for the team in every race of the season,
Ryan garnered Founders League All-Star status for the third year in a row
by way of his overall 6 th place finish in the championship race held at Choate
the week before the New England championships.

Alec, we honor with this year’s Coaches Award, presented to him in
recognition of the unfailing optimism and generous camaraderie he shared
with his teammates even as significant illness kept him from competing in all
but one race of his senior season. As he has in track and cross country
seasons past, Alec shared with his teammates a determination, discipline, and
competitive spirit both contagious and incomparable. Our thanks, Alec.
Our final award tonight goes to our Most Improved Runner. Every year,
every runner makes improvements; however, only once in a blue moon does a
runner move from back-of-the-JV-pack to front-of-the-varsity-pack. Thanks
to a summer of concerted mileage and more, David Balise raced as our third
fastest runner in all but one competition this season. Congratulations, David!
LCXC SENIORS:
JOHN BELLIZZI: Like many athletes, John joined the LCXC program
eager to begin his winter wrestling season in the best shape
possible…and soon found himself to be a bona fide harrier! Never
tentative about his ability to give 100 percent to ever workout,
every race, never injured, always upbeat, always can-do, John has
brought a quiet leadership into the midst of our 60-strong team,
bringing teammates with him as he has steadily lowered his race
times and increased his speed, endurance, and strength. LCXCers all
(especially your intrasquad grand-finale-winning LCSXC team!) will
miss you, John!
EUGENE CHA: Among the goals Eugene set for himself for this senior
year season was that of providing leadership to his younger
teammates: Eugene not only met this goal, but, in the eyes of his
coaches, surpassed it. At season's end, when most runners done with
their competitive season opted to stay on campus to partake in Kent
Day activities, Eugene suited up (truly, in spiffy shirt and tie) as
team manager and travelled with the New Englands competitors for a
long day of races up at Deerfield. Though he came up a bit shy of
his goal of running a sub-20:00 5 km, Eugene worked hard on the
trails (when his legs were feeling good) and in the fitness center
(when his shins would act up) and always set brisk pace and high bar
for anyone in his vicinity. Congratulations, Eugene, on a most
memorable LCXC career!

MICHAEL CURTIN: As elected tri-captain, Mike did everything a
coach could desire, everything a team could desire, everything a
teammate could desire, and then some...and all of his own initiative.
Truly, Mike wore the role of captain like it was custom made for
him: all four of the coaches concur that he has been one of the
finest team leaders of our coaching careers. In reviewing Michael's
goals sheet for the year, I'm not surprised to discover that among
his aspirations for senior year was to "have a happy and unified
team" and indeed, that we did, in much thanks to Mike. In addition
to knocking his personal best down to a handsome 18:49 (on the home
course), Mike raced consistently in the scoring cadre of the JV race,
top 12 or so for the team as a whole. Congratulations, Mike, and
thank you for all you've contributed to the success and camaraderie
of LCXC these past four years!
JAMES JURGENS: Starting the season with slight handicap (of
broken wrist!), James squandered not a minute of possible practice
time, figuring out alternative exercises for hard circuits drills that
involved weight upon arms, and working that much harder in all of
the runs. Ultimately, he not only reached his goal of running a sub
19:30 5km, but had the added pleasure of doing so in the last home
meet of his LCXC career (in the Trinity-Pawling race). Perhaps most
significant of all, however, was James's New Englands participation:
no pun intended, James made huge strides this season, and earned
his spot on the Deerfield starting line with uninterrupted and
uncomplaining hard work and hard workouts. Congratulations, James,
and thank you for all you've contributed to LCXC.
PHIL KAGAN: Coming down with mono was definitely not among Phil's
goals for this season; however, despite the significant delay in his
return to running with his LCXC team, Phil managed to make the
season a memorable one, ultimately toeing the line for the Founders
League race at CRH in mid-November. In addition to sharing as much
of his recovery time with the team as made sense (joining in the
team meetings and dinner and in the Thursday afternoon study halls),

Phil sustained palpable team spirit. As soon as he was cleared to
run, Phil moved quite naturally into a leadership role among the
harriers training at his pace. Many thanks, Phil, for all you've
shared with LCXC these four years: we will miss you!
EVAN MULBRY: Evan determined that this was to be the season of
silent shins, and did everything he could to keep those lower legs
quiet; however, for all his best efforts, the shins once again shrieked
at the rigors he imposed upon them, and for much of the season,
Evan was limited to non-impact alternative workouts. With
unflagging determination, nary a complaint ever, and a contagious
determination to make the most of fitness center and pool workouts,
Evan became literal leader of our wounded harriers. One of his
teammates noted, "Evan's circuits are even harder than HARD
circuits!" Truly, all four coaches concur: Evan has been an
unbelievable asset to his team this year, as much because of as in
spite of his ability to run as he most longed to run. Most
remarkable and wonderful of all was, absolutely, Evan's rallying to
race in the Founders League Championships, where his time was far
from the goal he'd set for himself back in August, but his
determination and positive attitude set sterling example for Pelican
teammates. Many thanks, Evan, for all that you've shared with LCXC
these four years!
RYAN PALM: Though he was our number one runner all season long,
I don't think Ryan really reveled in the role until the day he crossed
the finish line not just first for the Pelicans, but first overall: his
savvy and spirited homecourse race in the Taft/NMH/Hotchkiss meet
was most memorable not just for that win, but for the broad smile
that he wore throughout the entire afternoon, and no doubt, well
into the next week! As elected tri-captain, Ryan led the 60-strong
crew through daily warmup routines, peppered with impromptu minilectures
on sleep and diet. Coming a close second to that wonderful
first-time-finishing-first race was definitely Ryan's 16:20 win at the
Shaler Invitational, where he led his team to overall victory and
broke by a second his personal best from the 2009 season. Special
congratulations in order, too, for Ryan's strong Founders League race

and third year of All-League honors. Many thanks, Ryan, for all of
the strong races, leadership and camaraderie you've shared with
LCXC.
JACK RUSSO: Jack makes every single workout, every single race,
look like fun, look like exactly what he hoped and planned for that
day, even as he keeps his brow relaxed and sets his gaze firmly on
the back of the fellow in front on him, sets his goal on the fellow
beyond that. With his bright smile and brisk step, he has made
LCXC that much more fun, that much more fleet, for Pelican harriers
all. A leader by example each day, Jack stepped up as most
energetic and inspiring leader of his feisty intrasquad team: they,
and we all, will miss you next year, Jack!
ALEC SCHWAB: Ready to run on any day that his body gave him the
go ahead, and ready to bike alongside or head up to the fitness
center for alternative workout with fellow sidelined LCXCers on days
the body said so, Alec made the absolute most of his senior season,
wasting not a moment with what-ifs and should-have-beens. As
elected tri-captain, Alec led his team by example, in attitude and in
fortitude. That he was ready, eager, and able to toe the line for
the CRH/Deerfield/LC meet at Choate midseason speaks hugely to
how much Alec desired to contribute even more tangibly to the team
and the team experience this season. While he had every intention
of making his contributions by way of swift races and high places
this fall, Alec made contribution equally strong--if not stronger--by
his sterling example and very presence. Many thanks, Alec, for all
you've shared with LCXC (and yes, you can wear that "Cancer is my

GIRLS VARSITY SOCCER 2010 SEASON SUMMARY
The varsity girl’s soccer team had another solid season falling just one game short
for the New England championship. Some highlights of the season include a thrilling
come from behind victory over Taft, scoring three goals in the last twenty minutes,
taking the lead with only one-­‐minute left to play when Kelsey Adamson found the
back of the net. The demanding win over league foes Choate and Deerfield as the
team’s chemistry became evident through the creative and unselfish play as Faith
McCarthy, Liana Hinds and Maddie Gardner had their finest games of the season.
The resiliency that was shown in the Suffield Academy game, despite all of the
frustrations the team managed to keep pushing and come out on top as Faith
McCarthy buried the game-­‐winning goal with only two minutes left. The intense win
over a feisty and physical Hotchkiss team was also memorable as the Pelican
defense held off a talented attack. And of course the 2-­‐1 win over Phillips Exeter as
senior Emily Riccio scored her first goal of the year to force Loomis to the semi-­‐
finals of the New Englands. This season the Pelicans were led by a big group of
seniors who will be greatly missed next year.
Senior captain Alexa Yow had to deal with adversity this season as she was sidelined
for the entire fall due to an ACL injury. However, she managed to keep her spirits
high and in turn continued to be a great leader on the team, always positive and
encouraging to her teammates. Alexa’s talent was greatly missed on the field, but
she continued to play a pivotal role on the team. On senior day, Alexa got what she
was hoping for all season: to start in a game. She went in for the kick-­‐off and came
right out, but that moment on the field was a special one, one she won’t soon forget.
Co-­‐captain Maddie Gardner had a solid season, her finest coming in the Deerfield
game, as she was involved in four of the five Pelican goals, as well as the lone goal at
Hotchkiss to secure the victory. Maddie brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to
the team and was a great player who made a lot happen and she will be hard to
replace.
Kathy Yannopoulos and Emily Riccio are two seniors who brought an immense
amount of positive energy and enthusiasm to the field each day. These two seniors
always knew how to have fun and were two of the hardest workers on the team.
Emily’s first goal could not have come at a better time as she struck a beautiful ball
in the top of the goal to advance the team to the semi-­‐finals of the New England

tournament. Kathy constantly broke up plays and played solid defense all year. Both
Emily and Kathy were extremely hard workers and their personalities and work
ethic are impossible to replace.
Kendra Waters and Sarah Byrne played the outside back positions and both brought
something special to the team. Kendra was a speedy defender and was always
positive coming down to the field. Sarah was a very physical player who never let
anyone by her with out a fight. Both were hard workers and consistent defenders
and it will be hard to fill their spots in the upcoming seasons.
Kaily Williams was a speedy striker who used her speed to beat defenders to the
goal. She always applied solid pressure and made the opposing defenders nervous
every time she was on the field. She was always positive and will be missed in the
upcoming years.
Morgan Kille was a consistently solid defender and through her hard work and
gutsy plays, she prevented many offensive opportunities for opposing teams
throughout the season. Morgan showed a lot of heart and passion for the game along
with a solid work ethic and that combination is a great one to have and will be hard
to replace.
Emily Hughes was plagued with injury for much of the season, yet she still showed
up and showed her commitment to the team by continuing to encourage her
teammates every chance she could. She will be missed.
Alex Stevenson is a very dedicated athlete and a strong leader, as she captained the
talented JV squad. Alex never let up and maintianed a positive attitude throughout the
entire season. She was constantly encouraging to her teammates and consistently led by
example on and off the field. Her attitude and dedication made her an asset to the
program and she will be missed by all.

Faith McCarthy: Faith was and will continue to be an impact player on the field. The
combination of her work ethic and her impressive talent is difficult to come by and
is what sets her apart from the average player. Faith’s passion and dedication to the
game is evident in the way that she plays. Faith led the team in points, amassing
sixteen goals and eight assists for a total of forty points on the season.

Liana Hinds: Liana is an excellent player with a lot of talent and can make things
happen any time she touches the ball. Her impressive skills and knowledge of the
game make her stand out from the rest. She finished the season with ten goals and
ten assists for thirty points.
Team Awards
Coach's award: Roxy Barbera
This fall season, Roxy's hard work and consistent play made her a very solid and
reliable defender for the team. She was the anchor of our defense and what an
excellent job she did. Being the last defender back, keeping the defensive shape
ultimately fell on her shoulders and she managed with confidence and poise. Roxy
was encouraging to her teammates, never gave up on any battle and always came
down to the field ready to play. Roxy's consistency and determination made her a
pivotal component in the team's success.
MVP Breana derella
Bre's position in the midfield was exhausting in itself, but to play it each day the way
Bre did is something else. Bre truly embodies what it means to be a hard worker and
never once did she slack off at any point in a game. She pushed through exhaustion
and pain and never let either be any excuse to give anything but her best. In addition
to her work ethic, Bre's talent and knowledge of the game has and will continue to
make her an impressive soccer player.

VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY 2010 SEASON SUMMARY
The 2010 field hockey season has been the program’s best showing to date
tying the enviable record of the 1991 squad who made it all the way to the semi-­‐
final round of the New England Class A tournament this tiny squad of 16 varsity
athletes gave their all every day in practice and in games and came together to give
parents and faithful fans a great ride this season.
It was wonderful to see LC FH alumnae return to the field to cheer on their
teammates and even better to defeat Westminster in the quarter-­‐finals after losing
5-­‐0 to the Martlets in the regular season. A huge debt of thanks go to our graduating
seniors: Katie Shea, and her sister Caroline, whose spark and joy helped us to a
come from behind defeat of Deerfield. This win truly BEGAN the season for our team
when we realized we were much stronger than we had imagined and that
TOGETHER we could accomplish anything.
Memorable moments this season include Coach Yale-­‐Loehr’s amazing ability
to co-­‐ordinate a dinner order while coaching a game against Milton Academy, dinner
brought by the Crerend’s after the Sacred Heart game (is there a theme here?),
beating Taft and Choate so completely that it is not even memorable. Our stellar
comeback vs. Deerfield and having Claire Stover ’10 join us along with the jersey
presentation by our captains to Caroline Shea! Delicious tailgate dinners organized
by Christine Ryan and all of our amazing parents! A strong win against a talented
Williston squad, scoring on Hotchkiss, nice shot Conney, and holding the Bearcats in
suspense for 48 minutes. And of course our come back game against Westminster, in
the New England Class A quarter-­‐finals game! The girls played with such heart and
tenacity, it was incredible!
Our seniors, Katie Shea, Lindsey MacDonald, Mallory Collins, Alexandra
Crerend and our three captains Emily Fluke, Laura McConney and Shannon Ryan
have been nothing short of phenomenal this season. These ladies leave a lasting
legacy for our juniors Chloe Alexander, Lindsay Gabow, Katie Mandigo, Devin
Markison, Cally Moran, Emma Zeligson and new sophomores: Allison Byrne, Melissa
Haganey and Lauren Yue. The season would be incomplete without the assistance
and guidance of Coach Liz Yale-­‐Loehr and our English “associate” Joachim Civico. A
huge note of thanks to our wonderful parents for the food and the love and support
and to the 2010 football team and coaching staff for their cooperation and
sportsmanship every day this season sharing the turf field with our team so that we
could improve our game. We could not have made the strides we did this season
without the support from all of you. Thank you!
Loomis Chaffee 2010 Varsity Field Hockey Fall Athletic Awards
Much of the success of the 2010 varsity field hockey team can be directly attributed
to the tone set this season by my assistant coach Liz Yale-­‐Loehr and my dear friend
Joey Civico. The team had its best season since 1991, with an 11-­‐3-­‐1 league record
and an 11-­‐4-­‐2 overall record, making it all the way to the Class A NE Tournament
semi-­‐finals, this squad has produced 3 Academic All Americans: Alexandra Crerend,

Emily Fluke and Laura McConney as well as Western NE All-­‐Stars: Emily Fluke,
Shannon Ryan and Cally Moran and two players on the All-­‐New England Team:
Emily Fluke and Cally Moran. Not to be overlooked is the commitment of our seniors
Katie Shea, Lindsey MacDonald, Mallory Collins and Alexandra Crerend and our
secret weapon, Katie Shea’s sister Caroline who helped us through many hurdles
this season along with our three captains, the persistent Emily Fluke, the graceful
Laura McConney and the passionate Shannon Ryan. Special thanks to the Football
Team and Coaching Staff for sharing the turf field this year, it made all the difference
for us and thanks to our managers Katie Kent and Heidi Taggart.
Emily Fluke: Most Valuable Player:
Any coach who has had the opportunity to work with Emily Fluke breathes a sigh of
relief when “Flukey” is on the field. Tenacious, determined, tough, hardworking,
scary and Rock Star all spring to mind when describing Fluke’s athletic prowess.
Often with a Bull’s-­‐eye on her back, Emily played each game knowing she would be
double and triple-­‐teamed in the opponent’s defensive zone, and “taken out” if
possible by opponents who were frustrated by her play. If you have ever watched
her play field hockey you would shake your head and wonder why opposing coaches
even bothered to try and contain her. It is like trying to stop a freight train. With the
ease and acumen of Harry Houdini Emily can maneuver her way in and out of sticky
situations and find the back of the net or an open teammate for the assist and leave
the opposing team to shake their heads and ask... “When does she graduate?” For
four-­‐years Flukey has been a mainstay of the LC offensive force, this season she
tallied 25 goals and 27 assists for the Pelicans, a true team player, LCFH will sorely
miss the talent and leadership of this tremendous athlete for many years to come.
We award the 2010 Most Valuable Athlete Award to Emily Fluke with our thanks for
setting the bar for future Pelican athletes.
Laura McConney: Coaches’ Award:
When Laura McConney is on your team, it is a given that things will run smoothly.
Adept at interpersonal relationships, understanding what her coaches demand each
day in practice, each week in games, knowing exactly what her teammates need,
what the opposition will attempt and not getting flustered is all a part of Conney’s
gift. What makes having Conney on your team even better is that she is like an Oasis
in a sea of turmoil. Whether we are running sprints in the darkness, doing wall-­‐sits
with 90 lbs on our laps, dropping for pushups or down to the final seconds of over-­‐
time, Laura remains calm, cool and composed. She is unflappable and her
teammates feed off of her, (like baby Pelicans.) Conney’s kindness and compassion
for her teammates and her opponents is what sets her apart from her peers and her
ability to communicate with her coaches, officials, her co-­‐captains and her
teammates in a way that is both respectful and humble has set the tone for our team
this season. Laura has led the charge in and out of practice and games and for this
we award her the 2010 Coaches’ Award. Thank you, Laura.
Shannon Ryan: Coaches’ Award:

Five years ago I first laid eyes on an adorable little girl from Freedom, New
Hampshire. With a smile that could light up a room and a desire to please both her
coaches and her teammates Shannon Ryan quickly earned her spot as a freshmen on
the varsity team alongside a feisty and rambunctious Emily Fluke. For many
athletes playing alongside someone like Flukey could have been daunting,
distracting and depressing, but not for the girl from New Hampshire. Shannon did
what she does best. She played, with all her heart, all her soul and she embraced
every moment of every practice, every game, every win and every loss with the
same smile that has endeared her to so many of us here on the Island. Shannon
became a calm, collected and composed athlete. She plays with all she has, all the
time. I have pushed Shannon’s limits over the past four years, tried to see just how
far I could get her to go, and she always gave us more, dug deeper and worked
harder. She doesn’t give in and she doesn’t give up. As a co-­‐captain with Conney and
Fluke this season, Shannon offered her own gifts, possessing a passion for the game
of field hockey, excellence in style and field sense, and a desire to not only improve
as a player of the game, but as a captain for her teammates. It has been an honor and
a pleasure to watch Shannon mature as an athlete and a person. For all that she has
given and done to create a lasting legacy as a varsity field hockey player we award
Shannon Ryan the 2010 Coaches Award, congratulations Shannon.

BOYS VARSITY SOCCER 2010 SEASON SUMMARY
I was pleased with the growth of the soccer team this season. Everyone
understands that growth does not follow a straight line. When it is in an upward
direction life is good and all seems well. Previous seasons have been kind to the
boys varsity soccer program as they have won numerous league titles, appeared in
the New England playoffs perennially and won the New England title (3 times. I’m
hazy on the facts here). However, the trick is how you handle the down moments of
your individual and team development. This is a true analysis of character and we
certainly had some great responses when put to the test this season.
Important contributions from returning class, juniors Dilan Casanovas-­‐Mack and
Jesse Wasserman anchored the team on the vertical extremities of the field while
returning Varsity members Tyler Fan, Timothy Lyons, Dale Reese, and Nick Sailor
stepped in and worked collectively to build the team’s strength in the middle of the
field. Senior members Michael Choquette, John Kramer, Kikyung Lee, and Ignacio
Otero offered some reliable time on the field and guided the team to an 11-­‐5-­‐1
record respectively.
The boys on the field showed tenacity and determination at important moments
throughout the season, most notably during the Westminster game were a late goal
by the opponent had tied the game with less than 2 minutes to go. Reacting
positively, Junior Dilan Casanovas-­‐Mack and Senior captain John Kramer marched
the ball down the middle of the field and returned the favor to Westi in 9 seconds, a
truly remarkable way to win a game. This effort however could not have been done
without the support of all team members and new comers, John Abraham, Francis
Afriyie, Benjamin Colberg, Thomas Crandall, Charles Dorison, Michael Fishman,
Matthew Gomes, Haris Kuljancic, Cole Mattran, Paul Richter, Gerard Sager, and Erik
Stuer; who stepped into their new roles with gusto. Other notable games were the
victories against Choate Rosemary Hall and Taft that help secure a spot in the
tournament. Overall, the boys worked hard this year and put together a successful
season.
It was a pleasure to coach a group of young men that were both competitive and
supportive of one another. A special thanks to all the seniors on the team for their
commitment to the soccer program as well as Captains Michael Choquette, John
Kramer, and Jesse Wasserman for their guidance to the team. I believe that our
status in the league was an honest one and that all the players should be proud of
the honest commitment they put forth.

Mike made some great strides in his development as both a player and a leader. He
has always been the younger talented player so the leadership role was somewhat
new to him.
His high level of consistency as a player was respected from the start and was built
upon as the season progressed.

Most Improved-Dilan Cassanove
Dilan matured both physically and tactically this year so much so that he became a
major offensive threat for Loomis. He was both proficient technically around the
box as well as being generous with his passes. To see this growth in this area of the
field in one season is impressive.
Coaches Award-John Abraham
John was a great addition to the Loomis program. In the past these awards were
given to the player who “hustled” the most. This young man does not just run
harder he runs smarter. He was the hardest working player in our games. The key
here is that he raised his and the team’s level of effectiveness with his efforts. The
program will be pleased he is a returning player.

Team Awards:
Erin Currey, Brittany Lo & Claire Kokoska were elected to represent Loomis Chaffee at the New
England All-­‐Star Tournament.
Season Summary:
With 6 newcomers to the varsity squad, 2 of them first time players, the 2010 season had
numerous questions. Fortunately, Loomis did return 3 starters including New England All-­‐
Stars Claire Kokoska and Brittany Lo but moved junior Erin Currey to the setter position.
The team gelled quickly and played above their expectations early in the season. They
suffered a tough loss to Andover (eventual New England champ.), but their coach
commented this was one of the best Loomis teams he had seen in his career, likewise
Loomis defeated eventual class B champ Miss Porter’s 3-­‐0 early in the season; it was a
strong start. In a big rivalry games versus Choate and Taft, Loomis suffered some early
season adversity losing to Choate 3-­‐1 and then Taft 3-­‐2 in a heartbreaker. As a credit to
their high character and resiliency they rebounded with impressive wins versus Exeter (at
Exeter, first time in 10 years) and a big victory over #2 Hotchkiss and then followed up with
a great win avenging their early season loss to Choate. Midway through the season the team
was hit by injuries but once again in the face of adversity, overcame the new challenges and
persevered going 5-­‐3 to finish the season going 12-­‐6 overall and earning the #4 seed in the
New England tournament. The 2010 team came up short 3-­‐2 in the quarterfinal match
versus Choate but played great volleyball and has no regrets. This was another season that
will go down as being very successful and leaving a positive legacy.
The team would like to thank all of the family and friends that supported this team. Also, I
would like to thank the Loomis Chaffee athletic department for their hard work and support
as well.
Co-­‐MVPs:
Claire Kokoska: Claire embodies the true essence of a captain. She not only led the team
physically with her play, led every offensive category, but she sincerely cared for her
teammates and the well being of the team. She departs Loomis as a 2 time New England All-­‐
Star and has been a part of the most successful teams (in her 3 years) in LCVB history.
Brittany Lo: Brittany is the only 3 year starter at libero in recent LCVB history. She was a
captain and was an inspiration not only for her play but as a competitor as she led the team
in digs, passing and serving. She loved the game and her passion was contagious. She too
was part of the most successful 3 year run in LCVB history.
