A total of eleven patrols along our coastline were completed throughout 2013, during which one illegal gill netwas intercepted. However, the deterrent effect of these patrols should not be under-estimated. The SFB was alsocontracted in 2013 to undertake two patrols for the Dee District Salmon Fishery Board, enhancing our alreadyclose ties with other regional DSFBs and illustrating the value of pooling resources to tackle shared problems.Poaching activity on the River Spey in 2013 was reduced in comparison to recent years, although this may wellhave been a reflection on the availability of fish within the river. However, for the first time in many years, asignificant monofilament gill net was recovered from the river at Craigellachie in September 2013. The lengthand size of net that was recovered would have made it very unwieldy and probably impractical to be effective.Nonetheless, whilst the numbers of arrests and convictions may be low, the deterrent effect of a dedicated andprofessional group of Bailiffs should not in any way be under-estimated.3.10 Administration and Staffing2013 has seen more changes for both the Board and the Spey Foundation.We reported last year that our previous Biologist, Bob Laughton, had been appointed as Director of theFindhorn, Nairn & Lossie Fisheries Trust (FNLFT) from January 2012, with 50% of his time contracted back tothe Spey Foundation. Fifteen months later, the position with FNLFT became full-time and so in March 2013,after twenty-five years with the Spey Research Trust and more latterly the Spey Foundation, we said farewell toBob. Although Jim Reid remains available on an ad hoc basis, the Board subsequently advertised for a replacementAssistant Biologist. This produced a strong field of applicants, including Polly Burns who had joined us for fourmonths during the summer as one of our Seasonal Biologists. Polly had just graduated from the ScottishAssociation of Marine Science, part of the University of the Highlands & Islands, with a First Class HonoursDegree in Marine Science. She proved to be the strongest candidate and accepted our offer of a permanentposition.
