grandMACase StudyEurovision Song Contest 2006, Athens© Ralph@Larmann.comWith more than 1,000 people from 37 countries, as well as 2,000 reporting journalists, the EurovisionSong Contest that took place from May 18th to May 20th 2006 was one of the biggest music eventsworldwide. It was held in the O.A.K.A. hall in Athens which was fully booked with 14,000 spectators.

Eurovision Song Contest 2006in Athens, Greece– Show completely pre-programmedwith grandMA 3DThe Eurovision Song Contest was an outstanding event technically organizedby the German company Procon. The lighting system used around 500moving lights as well as Barco video- and Schnickschnack LED systems. Thevideo as well as the LED systems were put into motorized movable stairsthat had the shape of an amphitheatre. In total 44 DMX lines were usedthat were divided into four lighting worlds: moving lights, LED, white lightand video/media server. The complete lighting controlwas done via MA Lighting’s grandMA system. This included four grandMA full-size and onegrandMA light including backup and 22 NSPs (networksignal processors). Moreover an optic-fibrenetwork with four HP switches was installed to guaranteethe highest possible stability of the lightingcontrol system especially with the network. The team behind the scene with the winners“Lordi” from Finland.Such a complex installation of control and networkcould only be realized by the continuous, two-yearstandingcooperation between the mo 2 DesignGmbH, the company of lighting designer Manfred‘Ollie’ Olma, and MA Lighting. This started with thevariety production “Blue Balance” in Oberhaussen, followed by the SAT1 TV-production “Urmel aus demEis” and the Stage Entertainment musical night“Best of Musical”. These shows illustrated the benefitsof a real pre-programming studio to the team ofdesigners. They were able to keep within the limitedscope of time and budget and to use the short onsitetime as efficiently as possible. In parallel for MAthis event also meant important knowledge for thefurther development and functionality of theirsystem components.Pre-programming was of vital importance© Ralph@Larmann.comFour grandMA full-size and onegrandMA light including backup and 22 NSPsSix weeks before the show lighting designerManfred ‘Ollie’ Olma invited the whole team to thepre-programming in Cologne, Manuel da Costa(moving lights), Marcus Bossdorf (LEDs) and PhilippHerbst (Video) were present. Marcus Krömer andRené Berhorst (MA Lighting) were there to supportall three programmers. For the pre-programmingthey used another eight grandMA 3D systems forthe real-time visualization in addition to the further

consoles and NSPs. The complete show was divided into four differentsessions. For each session one grandMA full-size with backupwas used. Per 3D visualisation a VGA-Grabber-Card was inductedinto the MA mediaPC for the projection of the overallpicture. The other mediaPC was used by the respective programmerfor individual switchable camera views. The advantage was, thatbeside the front view, which assembled of moving light, LED andwhite light, each programmer could use a different camera perspectiveon his second 3D-computer, e.g. top view on stage. Even theGreenroom was controlled by a grandMA light with backup.© Ralph@Larmann.com“For the realisation of our job the MA system offered us possibilitiesthat we loved”, says Lighting Designer Manfred ‘Ollie’ Olma. “Wereally appreciated the close cooperation we’ve had with MA over thelast two years. Since the beginning of the pre-programming inCologne everything was to our full satisfaction. We had the chanceto program and present in Real time. The pre-programming phaseand the time in Athens was accompanied by a few bugfixes andrequests that were, even in this critical phase, taken up and implementedimmediately by MA Lighting. A bugfix that was found in themorning was already removed around midday and we could continueour work with the latest software.“Stability and flexibility of grandMA praisedOn May 1 st the whole team, materials and the mobile pre-programmingstudio moved to Athens. Here Oliver Heidingsfelder (programmer forthe white light) and Pia Virolainen (lighting designer assistant) joinedthe team as well. On the evening of May 2 nd the complete controlnetwork was re-built and ready to play so that they could start theon-site adaptation. Due to the pre-programming in Cologne only thecorrection of single presets had to be made; this did not take muchtime at all. As the build up of the stage in the hall was considerably"For the realisation of our job the MA system offered us possibilitiesthat we loved "– Lighting Designer Manfred ‘Ollie’ Olmadelayed the complete LED programminghad to be made via grandMA3D. As grandMA 3D is very close toreality and flexible too, the productionteam was very impressed andfull of praise for the system. Thiswas a very important benefit for abig, live production of this kind. Thestability, flexibility and the directaccess possibilities were importantfor the Eurovision Song Contest, aswithin the short lighting timemoods for 37 individual songs andartists had been created.Project teamShow Producer: Costas CharalambidisDirector of Photography & Lighting Designer:Manfred ‘Ollie’ OlmaAssistant Lighting Design:Pia VirolainenProject Manager: Foteini YiannoulatouArt Director & Set Designer:Elias LedakisArtistic Stage Director: Akis StamatiadisLighting Equipment: Procon, Udo Willburger(Production Manager)PRODUCTION by E.R.T.
