On The ComplexYouthelectronic 80 point facility is very impressive!Shifting FocusBy Bob FothLast fall, I had a chance to tour the newCivilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) airgunfacility in Camp Perry, Ohio. The fullyThe schedule there represents great progressas well. The NRA will host their 3PAR Championshipthere July 1-3. Junior Olympics willstart with Precision AR July 4-6, followed bySporter AR July 7-9 and PPP July 10-12. Immediatelyfollowing PPP will be the SmallArms Firing School then the NRA PistolCamp. Instructors at the camp will includeNational Pistol Coach Sergey Luzov, Olympicsilver medalist Ruby Fox and Brian Zins.ProgramsOnce again, we are pleased to invite all athletesfrom the State Junior Olympic Championship/QualifyingMatches in PPP. This PPPmatch is run jointly with the NRA and servesas their National Championship as well, withscores being added to the Top Gun teamscores from their air rifle events held July 1-3.History was made in Little Rock, Ark.March 14-15 when we conducted an NRA/USAS coach school for 140 coaches involvedin their Arkansas Game and Fish youth shotgunprogram. This program benefits over4,100 young shooters as well. InstructorsMarvin Spinks and Don Sipes did an incrediblejob with this huge group. We are veryexcited about ongoing programs with them!USA Shooting took the opportunity tobring four collegiate shotgunners into ourfold at the Association of College Unions International(ACUI) 41st annual InternationalClay Target Championships. The event washeld at the National Shooting Complex in SanAntonio, Texas March 18-22 and featured 337collegiate athletes from 37 colleges and universities, including seven new schools.First up was International Trap, whereTravis Mears of Lindenwood University (LU)took a 10 shot shoot-off to break a tie with LUteammate Jake Wallace. In Women’s InternationalTrap, Caitlyn Barney of Shreiner Universityearned the top spot. After the AmericanTrap and Skeet and a five-stand sportingclays events, International Skeet was the lastevent. Frank Thompson of University ofColorado – Colorado Springs won the men’smatch. The most impressive performance ofthe match was the 98/100 fired by Women’sChampion, Ali Chiang on a windy, gusty day.She started the final two points higher thanThompson had and far ahead of the otherwomen in the event.Russ Arnold headed up a great match staffthat also included Don Sipes from NRA, JackRobertson, Garry Barney and Tom Morgan.Detailed results from these events andseveral combined events are available on theACUI website, www.acui.org.It is with mixed feelings that I move onto the next portion of my article. I believestrongly in our youth programs and am veryproud of what we have accomplished. However, given the realities of the current economicsituation, USAS is no longer able to fund thatposition and program. We will look to distributeparts of that program to our partnersand within other USAS departments. WhileI am writing this, many details remain to beworked out. We are confident that with yourhelp and patience, we can continue to growyouth shooting sports.Paralympic ShootingI am so excited to have the opportunityto shift my focus to working with disabledathletes with Paralympic aspirations. I loveworking with athletes on the range andtrained along with Roger Withrow at theOlympic Training Complex many years agoas well as working with Dan Jordan duringsummer camps more recently, so I have someideas of the things we can start working onright away. This presents a great chance to build onthe program that U.S. Paralympics started.I will be coaching athletes as well as managingand raising some of the funding for theprogram. I am confident that my strengthsin understanding positions, shooting techniques, sport science, sport psychology andknowing what it takes to win at the highestlevels within the shooting sports will help ushave a fantastic team.We will have great partners going forward.U.S. Paralympics will work closely withus. The AMU looks to add more athletes tojoin Josh Olson in their system and a numberof military programs are springing up forwounded soldiers. The NRA also has a growingdisabled shooting program managed byVanessa Warner. Numerous other organizationsoffer a variety of programs to give thedisabled shooting sports opportunities.I am very much looking forward to puttingthe pieces of this puzzle together to build theworld’s best Paralympic shooting program!
