Even a few weeks off workbecause of an accident can cause severeproblems. What happens if youremployer doesn’t pay wages whilst youare off work – how do you pay yourmortgage and other outgoings? What type of accidents can I claimfor? You can claim for many differenttypes of accident at work. Examplesinclude injuries sustained whilst operatingmachinery or whilst lifting, falling from steps/ladders or fallingfrom height, slipping or tripping atwork, stock falling on you, injuries sustainedwhilst driving a fork lift truckor for being hit by a fork lift truck. Thelist is endless. Will I have to go to court? The vast majority of accident at workclaims settle without the need to go tocourt. How long do I have to make aclaim?Normally you have three years fromthe date of the accident to lodge yourclaim at court. The sooner you beginyour claim the better. Will my employer be insured?Almost certainly. Employers musthave insurance to cover claims madeby their workers for accidents at work. So, it shouldn’t cost your employer apenny and their insurance companywill deal with the claim for them. Will I lose my job if I make a claim?Bringing a claim against youremployer should not make any differenceto your job security. You areentitled by law to make a claim. Youremployer should just pass the claimover to its insurers to deal with andthere should not be any repercussionsat all. If your employer sacks you forbringing a claim it will almost certainlybe an unfair dismissal and you cantake your case to an Employment Tribunal. How much compensation can Iclaim? There aren’t any fixed amounts ofcompensation as each case dependsupon the nature of the injury and howit affects you. You can receive compensationfor the injury you sustain, past and future loss of earnings, medicaland care costs, rehabilitationcosts, out of pocket expenses etc. Ifyour ability to work is restricted as aresult of your accident you can alsobe compensated for that. How much will it cost me?It shouldn’t cost you anything. Mostspecialist personal injury solicitorswill recover their fees from youremployer’s insurance company. Yourclaim can be brought on a “No WinNo Fee” basis so you would not haveto pay even if your claim didn’t succeed. How much of my compensationwill I keep? You should be able to keep 100% ofyour compensation. How long will it take? Each case is different but mostcases take between 9 months and 2years to settle. But it is possible toget some payments throughout theclaim to cover things like lost wages, medical expenses etc.If you need further informationabout an accident at workcontact Chris Macwilliam for afree, no obligation interview onfree phone 0800 083 0815 oremail Chris.macwilliam@cloughwillis.co.ukor follow on twitter@TalkToChrisMac

18 Bolton Independent ISSUE 47Independent MOTORINGSNOW JOKE FOR DRIVERS!ALL the weather forecastsseem pretty ominous so nowwould seem an appropriatetime to remind drivers of someof the tips and warnings thatcome at this time of year andunder these conditions. It is so often annoying and unbelievablesome of the types of drivingthat people do without taking intoaccount the road conditions. At bestdrivers are foolish and at worstdownright reckless, not only endangeringlives but also riskingprosecution. So with this is mind these are thepointers that you should follow tominimise the chance of problemsfor you and fellow motorists:1. DO THE WINTER CHECKS ONYOUR CARCheck the battery strength. Lowtemperatures can flatten weak batteriesovernight. If the battery isweak then re-charge OR replace it.Top up your screenwashers withcold weather screen wash to enableyou to clear your windscreens.Ensure you have enoughantifreeze in your radiator system,it could save you the cost of areplacement engine!Check your tyre pressures. Overinflated tyres will lose grip easieron slippery conditions.Doing these checks first canmean the difference between gettingto work or having a costly snowbound car awaiting repair.2. BEFORE DRIVING OFF:Ensure that you have cleared thedirt and frost from all your windowsnot just the front windscreen. It isa criminal offence not to be able tohave full visibility whilst drivingand the penalties for such anoffence is heavy fine or five yearsimprisonment. Also your insurancecompany may refuse to pay out if acollision occurs whilst your car iscovered in snow.Ensure that all your car lightsare clear of snow and that indicatorsare clearly visible so that otherdrivers can see your intentionsclearly. If it is snowing do not put on yourrear fog light. They distract followingdrivers and will obscure yourbrake lights, increasing the chanceof a rear end collision. It is also anoffence. When warming the car in themorning do not leave the car runningunattended. Many opportunistcar thieves look out for cars left ondrives or roads with engines running.3 DRIVING IN SNOW AND ICE:When driving in snow and ice youshould always drive in accordancewith the road conditions. It maysound ridiculous but many driversneed to told to slow down on theseroads. You may feel that your carcan stop as normal, but try tellingthat to your tyres as you slide oninvisible black ice into oncomingtraffic at a junction.Slow down and allow a greaterstopping distance from the car infront, this will allow you plenty oftime to steer clear of trouble if thedriver ahead hits problems.Put on your side or headlights ifvisibility is reduced, it allows otherdrivers to clearly see you and foryou to see them.Drive in a low gear when settingoff. Many drivers will rev thewheels fast when losing grip butthe best thing to do is set off slowlyand build up momentum andgrip, especially on untreated roadsor if travelling up hill.Drivers should also use theirgears to slow down rather thanheavy braking which may cause thecar to skid. If your car begins to skiddo not brake, put turn into the slideand attempt to steer the car to asafe stop.Do not ignore this advice anddrive as you usually do. It couldprove dangerous and costly to you.For more motoring news and tipsyou can tune into my radio show'The GT Driver'' every Thursday at8pm on 96.5 BOLTON FM.Jack MarsdenMotoring CorrespondentTHORNTREES GARAGEHigh Quality UsedWheelchair Adapted CarsSpeed up, slow down• Large choice with over 60 vehicles in stock• Wheelchair friendly premises with disabledtoilets and restroom• Home demonstrations throughout theNorth of England• Just off the M6 Junction 28• Use your DLA payment to finance yourpurchases01772 622688www.thorntreesgarage.co.ukjulie@thorntreesgarage.co.ukWigan Road, Leyland, Lancs PR25 5SBWE'RE constantly told that speedis important to getting thingsdone – in work, in life. Wedemand ever faster broadbandspeeds and want to be servedquicker at the supermarket, sowhat's the big deal over an extra10mph?Modern cars are more capableof coping with higher speedsthan those that saw the introductionof the national speed limitmany years ago.It figures, then, that suchprogress should herald anincrease to 80mph. We all livefast-paced lives, so it stands toreason that we shouldn't be heldback on some of our safest roads. And then there's the elephantin the room, or rather the countrywith derestricted highways –Germany. If German drivers can manageto play nice with each other athigh speeds, why can't we?It's not a watertight argument, though.Opponents point to the UK's'arm's length' approach to drivertraining as an area of concern. Our cars might have all the latestsafety kit, but are driversequipped to deal with the higherspeed? Remember, there'scurrently no mandatory motorwaytraining for learners. And then there's the cost ofmotoring at a time of high fuelprices. Running at 80mph burnsconsiderably more fuel than drivingat 70mph. The green lobbyisn't happy either, as more fuelburnt means more exhaust emissions. For or against, you can't avoidthe enforcement issue. Wouldraising the limit introduce a morerigid enforcement culture tomaintain a good safety margin? Will it be a blanket figure forall motorways, or will it dependon traffic volumes or weather? Will two-lane roads be excluded, for instance? It's a can of worms waiting tobe opened.

ISSUE 47 Bolton Independent 19Car sales up in 2012LAST year can only be regarded as a successfulyear for the UK motor industry.Figures from September 2012 showedyear-to-date new car sales were up by4.35% on the same period in 2011, and thatwas in a year that has been generally seenas a tough one in many other industries.Consumer confidence has been in relativelyshort supply, yet the car market has provedto be resilient and relatively buoyant.Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Societyof Motor Manufacturers and Traders(SMMT), says: "The important Septemberplate change market outperformed expectationswith new car registrationsincreasing more than 8% on 2011 to359,612 units."Although the economic outlook remainschallenging, we are starting to see a tentativereturn of consumer confidence asmotorists explore new products and thelatest fuel-efficient technologies."That leads to the inevitable questionsconcerning 2013; how will it fare comparedto last year, and what will consumers belooking for? There's certainly good news coming fromthe car manufacturers. For one thing, theamount of diversity coming from the carmanufacturers is definitely a good thing. The increased use of platform and componentsharing brings a higher level oftechnology to cars that would ordinarilybe too far down the pecking order toreceive such luxuries. That also means bettervalue for the consumer. The other piece of good news for the carbuyer is that the manufacturers are puttingmore effort into cars in the very lowest pricebrackets. Cars such as the Dacia Sanderorepresent outstanding value for money, and an increasing number of offerings willappear in this segment in 2013.Not only does this give greater to choiceto buyers and make new cars accessible toa larger audience, it also promises to givethe used-car market a boost thanks to thegreater number of cars on the road.It might be that the economic side ofthings remains in the hands of those inauthority, but at least from the perspectiveof the car manufacturers and buyersalike, the prospects look somewherebetween healthy and bright.MOTORING SERVCESMotor Repairs & ServicesMOTORCHECKSERVICE & REPAIR CENTRE10% DISCOUNT with this advertMOT £29.99 with this advertCollection and delivery service available• Tyres • Service • MOT • FREE WinterTIMChecks • Exhausts • Repairs • ValetingCLUTCHES FITTED FROM £100Unit 8-12, Scot Lane Industrial Estate,Blackrod, Bolton BL6 5SLTel: 01942 831202CLUTCHES CLUTCHESCLUTCHSPECIALIST CENTREEST 1994100% NewFirst for valueQuality & ServiceTel: 01942 82666507976 613952 (24hrs)We will not be beatenon a like for like quoteCLUTCHES CLUTCHES✓MotorcyclesWantedMOTORCYCLESWANTEDClean bikesrunning or notFast CollectionRing TIM07989 640918tnkitchen@hotmail.comPREPAREYOUR CARFORWINTERMOTORING!MOTsEveryone’s TalkingMOT’s£25.00FREE RETESTTHE ARCHES SERVICECENTRE 01204 370864TO PROMOTEYOUR SERVICECALLCLASSIFIEDS ON01204478812Motors For SaleTOYOTA RAV-42002 NRGABS, Air Bag, A/C,Alarm, C/L, E/W, LongMOT, Pwr Stg, Stereo.Maintained locally, used daily.77,000 miles.3 DoorTaxed till July.£2,4000161 280 3462Subaru 2.0D REN OUTBACK BOXER 5DRSAT NAV LEATHER, 2008 (08), 95,000,2.0L, Diesel, Manual, Estate, Blue ...£8,945Volkswagen Touareg 2.5 TDI SPORT5DR AUTO LEATHER SAT NAV, 2004(54), 89,000, 2.5L, Diesel,Automatic, 4x4,Black........................................... £8,745Honda Fr-V 2.2 I-CTDI SE 5DR ONLY 40KALLOYS, 2007 (07), 40,000, 2.2L, Diesel,Manual, Estate, Silver...................... £8,495KIA Sorento 2.5 CRDI TITAN 5DR ONEPRIVATE OWNER FSH, 2008 (57), 113,000,2.5L, Diesel, Manual, 4x4, Silver .... £7,995Nissan Qashqai 1.6 VISIA 5DR ONLY27000 MILES, 2007 (07) 27,000, 1.6L,Petrol, Manual, Hatchback, Blue..... £7,850KIA Sportage 2.0 CRDI XS [138] 5DRFULL LEATHER 51000 MILES, 2006(56), 51,000, 2.0L, Diesel, Manual, 4x4,Black.......................................... £7,850Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI SE 5DR,2007 (57), 74,000, 2.0L, Diesel, Manual,Estate, Silver.................................... £7,785Seat Leon 1.9 TDI S 5DR [90] ALLOYSONLY 40000 MILES, 2009 (09), 1.9L, Diesel,Manual, Hatchback, Black ...............£7,385BMW 3 SERIES 320D SE 5DR FULLHISTORY 2.0, 2007 (07), 113,000, 2.0L,Diesel, Manual, Estate, Silver.......... £7,295Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCI ZETEC 5DR ONEOWNER FSH 5 SEATER, 2009 (59),119,000, 2.0L, Diesel, Manual, Estate,Black............................................. £7,295Mercedes-Benz C Class C270 CDIELEGANCE SE 4DR AUTO ONLY 51000MILES 2.7, 2005 (05), 2.7L, Diesel,Automatic, Saloon, Blue...................£6,995Mercedes-Benz E Class E320AVANTGARDE 4DR TIP AUTO SAT NAV 3.2,2004 (54), 55,000, 3.2L, Petrol, Automatic,Saloon, Blue...........................................£6,895Audi A3 2.0 TDI SE 5DR, 2006 (06), 80,000,2.0L, Diesel, Manual, Hatchback, Blue £6,850InLineTelephoneExtensionsVauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTI SRI [150] 5DR,2008 (08), 80,000, 1.9L, Diesel, Manual,TAILOR MADEHatchback, Black.......................... £4,745Renault Grand Scenic 1.9DYNAMIQUE 7 SEATER 5dr, 2007 (57),Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 S TDI PD 4DR,FABRICATIONS2008 62,000, 1.9L, Diesel, Manual,LTDPeople(08), 77,000, 1.9L, Diesel, Manual, Saloon, Carrier, GATES Blue ............................ 20 Bolton Independent ISSUE 47Independent LOCAL SPORTHARRIERS PAINT TOWNIN X-COUNTRY RED!Sisters play forrival counties!DECEMBER saw thefourth and final round ofthe Red Rose Cross Countryseries take place inLeverhulme Park andsuitably, a number ofBolton United Harriersrose to the challenge anddrama of their home fixture.Literally first and foremost,2011 champion Tom Carsonwas looking to retain his titleafter coming under pressurefrom Chris Fell last month. His tactics were simple: finishahead of the Rossendaleman. After his customarystarting burst, Carson kepthis nerve over the three lapcourse by allowing Salford’sGary Priestley (36:13), whowas not a contender for theoverall title, to overtake andgradually stretch away for theline. It proved decisive as Carsonhad saved his legs for asurge over the final half lap, edging second position (36:33)from Cambridge’s Alex Youngwith Fell in fourth (36:48).Frazer Jardine (37:17)erased his out-of-sorts turn atHyndburn with a brilliant displayto take fifth position, whilst Marc Tillotson’s seventh(38:08) capped anincredibly quick comebackfrom summer injury to collectthe series’ Bronze. With MarcZeller (12th) impressing againand Tony Valentine making arare x-country appearance(17th), Andrew Cafferky’s battlefor 39th marked him assixth counter for the Team. This was crucial as it gave theSenior Men (60) victory overRossendale (72) in the race, and importantly claim theSeries Team prize (again fromRossendale) by the slenderestof margins (248-250).Tom Carson produced a latesurge to clinch second placePerformances of the dayundoubtedly belonged toChris Povey, Dean Johnsonand Andrew Doyle. After selflesslyrushing to aid anotherinjured runner, they foundthemselves nearly 1km awayas the starting gun was firedfor the Men’s race. Strongmindedcommitment thensaw the trio scamper back tocommence the race with 8minutes already on the clock.Working as a team, theypicked their way through thefield to finish in creditablethird quarter positions, despite having prior highhopes for the top 50. The mainrace itself was delayed by 20minutes and may not havegone ahead but for their assistance,so Dave Hanson’s debutand Eric Ranicar’s M60 2ndwould also have been missed.A poignant note was alsostruck by life member KenCottam who completed therace alongside outgoing clubChairman Scott Whittle. Hewas honouring an agreementto compete with fellow Boltonveteran Brian Mawdsley, whopassed away earlier this year.Disappointingly for JonnyKay, the pre-race favourite forthe u20 title having led theseries contest from the start, shin splints forced him towatch from the sidelines asLeigh’s Liam Moore pippedhim by a single point to inheritCarson’s under 20 title. In the Women’s race,Leigh’s Laura Riches confirmedher class with anotherrace victory (21:51), repeatingTom Carson’s 2011 feat of aJunior and Senior title double.Shannon Johnson’s 23:31for overall sixth position gaveher the Silver medal in theu20 series competition. Shewas joined by Sarah Saxon(26:42), Julie Lomax (30:42)and Heather McEwen (39:39)on the team (8th of 13).Unusually for a home fixture, the junior teams had alow turnout. Joe Gande narrowlymissed a medal in theu13 competition (4th) after his9:26 (6th) in the race, withLuke Entwistle (9:54) close intow. For the girls, GeorgiaGreenhalgh (10:57) led homeLeah Rushworth (11:57),Shannon McClarence (12:37),Ellie Forrest (14:23) andSophie Green (14:29). Excellenteighths in the u15 raceand series were claimed byKatie Oakley (19:06) andMatthew Walker (16:29),whilst Will Grimshaw (21:49),Hywel Scourfield (23:21) andMegan Robinson (33:10)showed improvement for theu17s. The u11s had AliceTonge (8:14 – 13th) leadingthe way, with Molly Philbin(8:36), Amelia Thornley(10:13) and PatrickMcClarence (9:08) appearing. It capped a highly successful2012 in which Boltonbecame Team championsacross in all the main leaguecompetitions of Endurance,Track & Field and now X-Country disciplines.
