The zone consists primarily <strong>of</strong> a mixture<strong>of</strong> halite and sylvite, with carnallite as the major accessory m<strong>in</strong>eral. Only small amounts <strong>of</strong>CaSO4 are present, and the average content <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>solubles is 1.84 per cent. The <strong>in</strong>solublesconsist <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ely dissem<strong>in</strong>ated greyish green clay. The halite occurs as coarse gra<strong>in</strong>ed crystalsenclosed <strong>in</strong> an irregular matrix <strong>of</strong> sylvite.C) The salt backThe salt back extends from the top <strong>of</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> ore zone at 965.7 m to the top <strong>of</strong> thePrairie Evaporite at 944.13 m. The dom<strong>in</strong>ant m<strong>in</strong>eral is halite <strong>in</strong> clear, medium to coarsegra<strong>in</strong>ed crystals. However, both carnallite and sylvite occur sporadically throughout the saltback, and <strong>in</strong> places are concentrated <strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong> layers. The <strong>in</strong>soluble clay content is variablefrom almost nil to more than 40 per cent <strong>in</strong> one carnallite-rich bed.The ma<strong>in</strong> concentration <strong>of</strong> potash m<strong>in</strong>erals <strong>in</strong> the salt back is <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terval between950 and 956 m. Carnallite is enriched at the top <strong>of</strong> this zone, and some sylvite occurs lowerdown. The concentrations are sufficient to cause prom<strong>in</strong>ent peaks on the gamma-ray logs, andthese have been termed the White Bear marker beds.d) White Bear: "marker beds" and "member"Persistent th<strong>in</strong> layers <strong>of</strong> potash occur with<strong>in</strong> the salt back, some 12 to 15 m above theEsterhazy Member. These layers are called the White Bear marker beds by Holter (1969). Laterwork by Worsley and Fuzesy (1979) suggested the beds thicken <strong>in</strong> southeastern Saskatchewan, andthey have proposed nam<strong>in</strong>g them the White Bear Member.In <strong>Manitoba</strong> these beds have been cored <strong>in</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the potash test holes. The mostpersistent unit is the lowermost bed.
