Perkins Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Subhead Córdoba herePerkins Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Córdoba,Argentina, June 28-30, 2010Meeting of L<strong>at</strong>in American families of individuals with visual impairments andadditional disabilities and/or deafblindnessPerkins Intern<strong>at</strong>ionalbrought together leadingparents from 15 L<strong>at</strong>inAmerican countries in l<strong>at</strong>e June2010 for the purpose of cre<strong>at</strong>inga L<strong>at</strong>in American-wide parentorganiz<strong>at</strong>ion.At this meeting there wereleaders from various countrieswho have just started the searchfor solutions for their children.They had the opportunity tomeet members of other parentorganiz<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> have beenstruggling for the last 20 years forbetter services for individuals withvisual impairments and additionaldisabilities and/or deafblindness inL<strong>at</strong>in America.Special guests from thegovernment of the Province ofCordoba <strong>at</strong>tended the second dayof the meeting.Perkins Intern<strong>at</strong>ional stronglybelieves th<strong>at</strong> collabor<strong>at</strong>ionbetween professionals and familiesis the best way to develop servicesand opportunities th<strong>at</strong> bring aboutquality educ<strong>at</strong>ional services forthe children. This is why StevePerrault, Graciela Ferioli and otherteam members, as part of PerkinsIntern<strong>at</strong>ional, worked so hard toensure this meeting would besuccessful.The meeting was held in the cityof Córdoba, Argentina, on June 28-30, 2010. The <strong>at</strong>tending countrieswere represented by leadingparents selected from each of thefollowing countries: Argentina,Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, CostaRica, Chile, Ecuador, Gu<strong>at</strong>emala,Mexico, Panama, Paraguay,Uruguay, Dominican Republic,Venezuela, and Peru. The meetingcoordin<strong>at</strong>ors were Lic. Alicia Rosaz,Prof. Verónica Cajal and Prof. ÁureaSoza; themselves leading mothersas well as Perkins consultants.At the opening ceremony, acandle representing dreams andwishes, was lit on the Tree of Lifeby each <strong>at</strong>tendant. All <strong>at</strong>tendants,each determined to strike downbarriers, acknowledged withthanks the opportunity providedby Perkins and its L<strong>at</strong>in Americanrepresent<strong>at</strong>ives to join the workteam as active members.The present<strong>at</strong>ion, enhanced witha Tree of Life, was really touching.Each <strong>at</strong>tendant narr<strong>at</strong>ed how theirway was illumin<strong>at</strong>ed by the otherparents they met. Experiences,hopes, and dreams th<strong>at</strong> pavedthe way for a new start were alsoshared by organiz<strong>at</strong>ions such asFUNDAL (Gu<strong>at</strong>emala), Fundapas(Venezuela), Abraspascem (Brazil),APPS (Argentina), APPEDIVIDA(Uruguay), Fundación Braille(Paraguay), ASOMULTIDIS (Ecuador)and Leaders Parents (Chile).Encouraging and discouragingexperiences were shared andexchanged during the meeting,all of which resulted in thedetermin<strong>at</strong>ion to build a L<strong>at</strong>inAmerican network of families. To<strong>at</strong>tain such a goal, the followingissues were discussed: models,leadership, empowerment, vision,mission, organiz<strong>at</strong>ion chart, roles,tutors, and familiy rights.A result of the meeting wasthe cre<strong>at</strong>ion of L<strong>at</strong>in AmericanFeder<strong>at</strong>ion of Families ofIndividuals with <strong>Deafblind</strong>ness and/or Multiple Disabilities. The mainobjectives of this new feder<strong>at</strong>ionwere agreed to be as follows:provide inform<strong>at</strong>ion, training,support and empowerment tofamilies and parent organiz<strong>at</strong>ions;raise awareness and emp<strong>at</strong>hy;form parent and professionalspartnerships; become involvedin public policies; promote socialinclusion and new services orprograms; organize local andintern<strong>at</strong>ional conferences; provideencouragement and exchangeexperiences; conduct surveys;cre<strong>at</strong>e libraries and maintainrecords.It was agreed th<strong>at</strong> the newFeder<strong>at</strong>ion shall be organized asfollows: Four facilit<strong>at</strong>ors, eachrepresenting the countries of theirJan u a r y – Ju n e 2011 • DbI Review • 7
