Sheela Gowda
Studies art at Bangalore University, M.S. Baroda University, the Vishvabharati in
Shantiniketan and the Royal College of Art in London.
As of 1985 participation in solo and group exhibitions in India, South Africa, United States,
England, Japan, France and Germany.
Participates in the two “Art in Nature” workshops in New Delhi and Bangalore respectively.
For the first she constructs a “Dorfraum”, in which ritual elements, cowpats, soil and water
are portrayed as life-giving forces, and gold threads as symbols of never-ending sources of
energy. This year through her artistic interventions she transformed a garbage dump and an
old target practise range outside Bangalore to locations with new points of reference. In her
work Sheela Gowda imbues nature and soil with a new meaning by restoring their original
dignity following their mutilation by man.
