<strong>THE</strong> K<strong>IN</strong>G’S <strong>SCHOOL</strong> <strong>IN</strong> <strong>MACCLESFIELD</strong><strong>DIRECTOR</strong> <strong>OF</strong> <strong>SPORT</strong>FUR<strong>THE</strong>R DETAILS AND PERSON SPECIFICATION<strong>SPORT</strong> AT K<strong>IN</strong>G’SKing’s has long enjoyed an outstanding reputation for excellence in Sport, which is animportant and vibrant part of pupils’ lives. The school's philosophy is to provideopportunities for all at a level appropriate to their ability in a wide range of sportingactivities. PE and Games are integral to the curriculum and participation both of pupilsand staff ranges widely beyond that. Whether achieving national prominence or makingmore modest progress, pupils find the school keen to support their interests andenthusiasms.There is a rich extra-curricular programme in the school including lively inter-Housecompetitions. All members of staff are expected to make a full contribution to the lifeof the school outside the classroom and the PE staff are particularly involved insupervising lunch-time and after-school sporting practices and competitions.The school has a national reputation in rugby and cricket. The fixture list involves mostof the best schools in the North of England. Girls and boys from the school regularlyplay for county teams and many reach national selection. In the past three years, threepupils have gained international selection at Under 16 and Under 18 level for rugby.Last year’s cricket captain played for Derbyshire 2nd XI and now has a contract with thecounty. Last year, one pupil ran with English Schools Athletics and this summer onepupil will represent her country at the Olympic Games. The school’s cheerleading andtrampolining teams are reigning national champions.Sport is nurtured and developed from the early years at King's. A wealth of staffexperience and enthusiasm ensures that a breadth of relevant sporting opportunities isdelivered in lessons and through an extensive extra-curricular programme. Junior teamscompete successfully at a local and regional AJIS level in Rugby, Football, HockeyNetball, Cricket, Rounders, Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming. Teams from King’sJuniors competed at the National Trampolining Championships in March. The U11 Eliteboys’ team were crowned National Champions and the U11 Elite girls were awardedthird place.<strong>THE</strong> DEPARTMENTThe PE Department at King’s serves a large school community of able and wellmotivatedpupils. Sporting ability ranges from the exceptionally gifted to those lackingconfidence, who need support and encouragement.


At present, there are six full-time PE teachers supported by several part-time sportscoaches and GAP year students. The full-time PE teachers at the school, each of whomenjoys a measure of delegated responsibility within the department, are responsible fortimetabled lessons. The school also offers examination courses in GCSE PE to Year 11and A Level Physical Education in Years 12 and 13. More than 20 coaches and nonspecialistshave a curricular input into the Games and Activities programme and afurther 30 colleagues make an extra-curricular contribution to teams, clubs andtraining, including at specialised camps.In Physical Education and Games, King’s seeks both excellence and opportunity for all.In the last ten years, the school can boast national champions or internationalrepresentatives in sixteen different sports. On many Saturdays, more than 350 pupilsrepresent the school and more than half the pupil population has represented King’s inone or more sports. In the past decade, King’s teams have played on every continent.<strong>SPORT</strong>S FACILITIESTeaching facilities for Physical Education at King's include:On SiteCumberland Street Site: Gymnasium; Astro Pitch and Astro Area; Fields (15 acres)Fence Avenue Site: Gymnasium; Games Hall; Tarmac Tennis/Netball Courts; Field (10acres) Redgra and Blackgra Artificial pitchesOff SiteDerby Fields and Pavilion (20 acres) – about 2 km from the Town Centre. The school alsomakes use of a number of other facilities, including:• Macclesfield Leisure Centre and Pool (12 hours/week curricular use, and 6hours/week extra curricular use)• Adlington Golf Range and Academy Golf Course• Redesmere Sailing Club• Bollin Valley Linear Park (for Cross Country)• and a wide variety of Outdoor Activity locations locally and in the Peak DistrictNational Park for both curricular and extra curricular use.<strong>THE</strong> <strong>SPORT</strong>S PROGRAMMEThe main sports are rugby football and hockey during the winter and cricket andathletics in the summer in the Boys’ Division, and netball and hockey in the Girls’Division in the winter and tennis, rounders and athletics in the summer. Each activityinvolves substantial numbers and maintains a full list of fixtures. The main sports, aswell as the wide variety of other sports offered, are heavily dependent on the supportof colleagues from outside the PE Department, many of whom have high levels ofspecialist skills. All of these colleagues show great enthusiasm and commitment and areencouraged to develop their coaching abilities. The PE Department takes a lead role inthe main sports as well as providing regular support, assistance and advice to nonspecialiststaff involved in the Games programme.The Games programme offers the following activities for Years 7 to 11 during the year:• Rugby Football• Cross-country


• Hockey• Athletics• Cricket• Netball• Rounders• Tennis• Basketball• Trampolining• CheerleadingA comprehensive programme of competitive and recreational activities is offered toYears 12-13 on a Wednesday afternoon. Other sporting extra-curricular activitiesavailable to the pupils are: table tennis, sailing, fencing and judo.<strong>THE</strong> VACANCYThis is a significant and challenging new post which comes at a crucial time in thedevelopment of Sport at King’s. As well as maintaining and promoting the profile ofSport across the Foundation, the appointee will lead a major development programmewhich will see the enhancement of the school’s Sports facilities and the design andbuilding of a new Sports Centre. The importance of the role and the size of the jobmean that the successful candidate is likely already to have gained some experience ina position of responsibility.The successful candidate will need to give evidence of:• an excellent degree of personal organisation and efficiency;• the ability to lead, manage and coordinate the activities of large numbers ofstaff;• appropriate coaching qualifications and experience;• successful experience of departmental management;• and the ability to lead by example in matters of training and professionaldevelopment.Central to the job will be the co-ordination and oversight of Sport across the whole ofthe Foundation, including liaison with the Infant and Junior Division. Allocation ofstaffing and resources as well as delineation of management structures andresponsibilities will form important aspects of the role as it develops. Communicationwith colleagues, pupils and parents will have a high priority as will the celebration ofsuccess. Working for the Director of Sport will be the Head of Rugby, Head of Cricket,Head of Hockey and Head of Girls’ Physical Education. At least initially, the successfulcandidate will assume overall responsibility for academic PE.Candidates should have experience in at least two of the major school sports andessential requirements are the energy and presence to lead and manage a major areawithin this leading independent school. A high level of personal sporting performancewill be an additional recommendation. The position is available from January 2013.
