Golf Accessories ReviewDon’t turn off that iPhone…It’s your GameBook scorecard!By: Reid NelsonWhen the InternationalNetwork of Golf stagedits 20th annual SpringConference at the historic PinehurstCountry Club in mid-May, attendeesplaying in the tournaments associatedwith the conference weren’t givenscorecards and pencils. Instead, for thefirst time, each foursome was given acell phone. Now before you purists who thinkthat cell phones should be banned fromgolf courses – as well as clubhouses, restaurants and just about anywhere elseone side of a conversation can annoyothers – we should explain that thesephones weren’t being handed out so thatplayers could make calls. These iPhoneswere all equipped with GameBook, thelatest real-time scoring system, which,on this day, would add the same immediacyand excitement to the ING eventthat giant electronic scoreboards provideTour events. So what is GameBook? The answerto that question is two-fold. But in short, both the GameBook real-time scoringsystem for golf clubs and the GameBookiPhone application are ways for golfersto record and track event scores in realtime, whether across the course, acrossthe country or around the world.“GameBook brings up-to-thesecondscores right into your golf cart.Other companies have tried to do thesame, and some ... have enjoyed success. But GameBook’s technology goesa step beyond,” wrote ING ExecutiveDirector Mike Jamison, who usedGameBook in a March round withreigning Open champion Stewart Cinkin Florida before selecting the systemfor the ING Spring Conference.Jamison’s comments appeared inthe Orlando Golf Examiner, part of theExaminer.com network.”GameBook’s ease of use meanspace of play will not be affected. Playershave instantaneous access to scoring, statistics, drive distance, shot tracking, handicaps and much more, together withan array of pre-loaded side games,”Jamison added.“Another benefit is that GameBookbecomes a salestool and instantprofit center forgolf courses thatcan lease theunits to corporateoutings,” heconcluded. With Game-Book, playerscan enter theirscores hole-byhole,and then,by simply turningthe device –either the dedicatedhand-heldunit that is partof the Game-Book system ortheir own iPhonewith the Game-Book applicationinstalled –from horizontalto vertical, they can instantly view theupdated leaderboard. And side bets, other contests and even the scorecardsof fellow competitors are just as easilyviewed with a simple touch of thescreen. And because menus and functionshave been designed to be intuitive andeasy to use, even first-time users, likethe players in the Pro-Pro, are completelycomfortable with the GameBookwith little or no instruction.iPhones equipped with GameBook addsreal-time scorekeeping to your golf gameor tournament outingsiPhone users can download theGameBook application from The AppleStore for $20, minus some change. Withthe ‘app,’ you can play games with yourbuddies at the club or many miles away. And because the application ties youinto the on-line GameBook community, you can track your scores and stats, aswell as those of your friends, via the Internet.Club owners can contract for an entireGameBook system, complete withan extranet and the hand-held scoringdevices, and use the system to score anythingfrom the club championship to theFriday afternoon blitz. For day-to-dayplay, the devices are rented out to players, one per group, just like the pro shopwould rent out a golf cart. But it’s the iPhone app that individualgolfers will find so attractive.
