AT HOMEathome}pattern number 41916 – beach(digitally printed wall mural – 1.83m x 2.6m)2AT HOME1What walls want, is what walls get! Wallpaper is oftenreferred to as an art form, a canvas that just happens tocover the whole wall, but just as a gallery mixes scaleand materials in their presentation so do people with theart they put in their homes.suspended from the wall to allow the natural light andcolour scheme of the room to create dramatic effects.Box art pieces in metallic or prints create depth and,as a series of three – the triptych effect – offer an air ofconfidence and variance to a room.In 2004 Graham & Brown innovated the home artmarket by introducing unique, affordable, hand paintedcanvases. Suddenly people became adventurous withart, gaining knowledge on how best to use a triptych, diptych or feature piece to enhance their surroundings.Art for art’s sake? No art, for enhancing the mood, forenhancing our homes.By developing this category, Graham & Brown beganto create a design and art democracy, allowing peoplefrom all walks of life access to ‘the look’ that had beenpriced beyond them.Hand painted canvases, grew into fabric art, withembroidered embellishments across contemporaryabstract design. Glass art followed, with glass pieces,Adding drama through ‘wall-art’ extended to largescaledigital murals, creating beach scenes, overscaledflorals or even a graffiti backdrop to your teens’bedroom, whilst the printed canvases do the same forthose who don’t want their whole wall to be the pieceof art.The latest instalment, mirrors, reflects Graham & Brown’spursuit to adding design and colour to all things for thewall. So often mirrors have been slabs of reflective glassmundanely framed, that add nothing to a room whennot performing their function. The range of Graham &Brown mirrors changes this, creating something thatlooks beautiful, even when you’re not staring into it!Wall art. DESIGNER TALK❝ it is great to seemy signaturestyle of glamourand elegancetranslated ontowallpaper❞you30 WhatWallsWantWhat was it about the concept of designingwallpaper that appealed to you?“I love the way you can change the whole look of aroom with the use of wallpaper. A blank canvas onwhich to create is a challenge all designers embraceand wallpaper is a great medium to work with. I finddifferent colours, textures and pattern can have sucha dramatic effect on a room.”What was your inspiration for the collection?“The designs are a true reflection of the influences Ihave experienced through my travel and my work asa fashion designer. It is great to see my signature styleof glamour and elegance translated onto wallpaper.”Do you find there are similarities betweenfashion and wallpaper?“Both are about expression and making a statementabout our personalities. Fashion leads the way andwhat we tend to find is that the trends on the catwalkfilter down to trends in wallpaper over a period oftime. We get comfortable around new colours andpatterns in the clothes we wear and this then makes anatural transition into our use of design on our walls.”What would you say to people who might betoo timid to try something so fashion-forwardfor their walls?“Create a storyboard as a starting point. Images yousee in magazines that you like, material swatches, colour areas that make you feel good. This will helpyou get your ideas together and give clarity on whatDESIGNER TALKdesignertalkmeet our teamGraham & Brown work with a broad portfolio of internationally renowned designers –here we caught up with four of them, and asked them to answer the most frequentlyasked questions the public want to know of our famous designers.Starting with Julien Macdonald, the glittering star of the catwalk fashion…are trying to achieve. Then gather wallpapersamples that you think will help you create the look.Pin these to the wall and live with them for a weekor so. You will see that the colour may change atdifferent times of the day and you will get a view onwhether you could live with the pattern and its effect. You can then also pull together other bits that willmake up the room and create the look you want.Keep referring to your starting point, the storyboard.Once you are happy with all the elements go for it!”Have you papered the walls in your homewith your own design?“Absolutely! I Couldn’t wait to decorate and had myplans sorted well before the product was even made!My favourite room ismy guest bedroomwhere I have usedDazzle in Black/Silver on one wallbehind the bed. Ithen used black silkbedding with lotsof cushions in greys, blacks and redsmade from differenttextile materialswith a black crystalchandelier to top itall off!”dazzle from the Julien Macdonaldcollection for Graham & Brown– pattern number 16241WhatWallsWant 31
