The CUABC fighters put in anumber of impressive performancesagainst strong opposition which, despite losing 5-4 on the night, gives them every reason to be confidentwith the Varsity Match fastapproaching. After the inevitable pomp andceremony the first fight set the tonefor a thrilling evening. An old handin the ring and returning Blue, EdChadwick, fought one of five highlyexperienced fighters from the MetropolitanPolice. It was a fiery affairwith both men racing out of theblocks, not afraid to pull any punches.Chadwick, however, paid the pricefor his offensive, being caught offguard and receiving a number ofright hooks from the policeman. Withhis opponent bearing down on him,Chadwick, despite a valiant effort, could find no answer until HeadCoach Bob Blowes eventually threwin the towel late on the second round. The University boxers were underno illusions about the quality of theopposition and the next three boutsall went the Town’s way. FergalMcCool was perhaps unlucky to bepitted against such a competentfighter in John Metcalf, again fromthe Met, and lost on points despiteshowing some classy moves. Supeheavyweight ‘Big’ Robert Peppercertainly will be feeling aggrievedafter dominating the first 90 secondsof his fight before Sam Smith, withwhat seemed to be his first and onlypunch, enforced a dubious TechnicalKnockout. 4-0 to the Town.Staring at a whitewash, Cambridgefought back into the contestwith Elliot ‘The Pitbull’ Chambersstaging perhaps the biggest upset ofFootballCuppers (1st Teams):Round 2St Catz 6-3 St. John’sDowning P-P DarwinGirton 3-3 (0-3) HomertonLong Road P-P SidneyFitz P-P JesusChurchill P-P EmmaTrinity 4-3 CCCCCaius P-P Selwynthe night in his first ever fight. Hishubristic pre-fight affirmation that“Amateur Boxing needs me” wasperhaps confirmed as he danced hisway around the ring like a youngdeer with Goddard failing to landmost of his throws. With his opponentfrustrated, Chambers variedhis attack well and landed a fine righthook in the second. His quick feetand slipping ensured that he containedall that Goddard had to throwat him in the third and he scored amajority points decision. If Chambers produced the biggestupset then Segawa Kiwanukatook the prize for performance of thenight. Inevitably the newarrivals came at a price, Cambridgefinally losing their battleto hold on to promising strikerChris Holroyd. Holroyd, whowas Cambridge’s most prolificplayer, has been prised away byBrighton manager Gus Poyet, the deal finally completed thisweek for an undisclosed fee.
