IMPLEMENTING THE PUBLIC SECTOR EQUALITY DUTYThese will include policies and practicesrelating to:l day-to-day practicesl learning and teachingl research and knowledge transferl terms and conditions of employmentl grievance and disciplinary proceduresl management, monitoring and qualityassurancel information and ICTl communications and <strong>public</strong> affairsl estates and procurementl health and safetyl partnerships and community links.HOW CAN WE DO AN IMPACTASSESSMENT?Firstly, establish an impact assessment groupconsisting of senior management, relevantmiddle managers, trade unions, studentcouncil/union and people from all <strong>equality</strong>strands – age, disability, gender (includinggender identity), race, religion or belief andsexual orientation).This group should work with staff and studentsfrom <strong>the</strong> <strong>equality</strong> strands – probably through<strong>equality</strong> action groups or staff/student networks.(The people on <strong>the</strong> impact assessment groupmight be chairs/co-ordinators of <strong>the</strong>se groups.)l In <strong>the</strong>se groups priorities for impact assessmentcan be identified from all policies andpractices, existing and new (initial screeningprocess, including step 1). An example ofan initial screening form is provided withthis toolkit – see page 13.l The impact assessment group should identifypriorities for impact assessment drawnfrom <strong>the</strong> initial screening process, involvingstaff and students from <strong>the</strong> <strong>equality</strong> strands(step 2).l The impact assessment group can <strong>the</strong>ncomplete <strong>the</strong> pro forma (see page 16),<strong>the</strong>reby producing an action plan (steps 3–6).l Results of <strong>the</strong> impact assessment processshould <strong>the</strong>n be published (Step 7).12
