Many parents have beencalling to inquire about the schooldistrict’s timeline regarding the newstate implementation of full daykindergarten at all Spokane PublicSchools. At this time, we have heardnothing official. WHEN we havesomething to report officially, we willpost the information on our website.Student Pick-Up &Drop-Off Reminder:Please remember that 15this a one-way street from Eastto West and that both sidesof the crosswalk on 15th areconsidered No Parking Zones. We appreciate your cooperationin helping us minimize trafficcongestion.Dear Roosevelt family and friends,For the month of March, our focus is “Roosevelt has Power”. This is the power eachperson has to do the right thing, to be an upstander and make a difference. All studentswill be participating in the Paper People Project. Below is a description. The purpose of this activity is to illustrate the ways in which bullying hurts our hearts andour bodies. This month, in honor of our theme, all students will be invited to create a paper personthat represents what is important to them with words, symbols and drawings. Then theyare asked to pass them around the class and along the way students either make a smalltear, cut, mark or fold. When the paper people return to their owner they are encouragedto try and repair the damage by smoothing out the lines and wrinkles and taping the cutareas. Students are encouraged to process their feelings and many shared how difficultit was to harm something that someone held so dear. Students are able to make theconnection that bullying hurts our hearts and our bodies and the memory stays with us; thatwe must be so careful with our words and actions because we can never take them back.Interspersed throughout the display are famous quotes that speak to the value, worth anduniqueness we all possess. Also the power we have as individuals to do the right thing. To be an “upstander” and say something or do something when we see another personbeing targeted. Our actions as individuals can make a difference and as a whole are verypowerful when we come together and build a culture of kindness and caring.Students will also be invited this month to write about a time that they stood up forsomeone, and used their personal power in a positive way to make a difference and helpanother person. These stories will be posted around the school for all to see and serve asreminders and affirmations of the power of one.You can view the students’ work on the wall above the main stairway. We are also excited to announce that our Leadership students have been nominated for aChase Youth Award. Leadership students and their families are invited to participate inthe 2013 award ceremony at the Martin Woldson Theatre on March 11 at 6:00.
