16People人 物HKBU world championsare the toast of Wall Street為 港 爭 光 四 工 管 生投 資 分 析 賽 全 球 摘 冠Four students from theHKBU School of Businesss c o o p e d t h e g l o b a lchampionship over fourcompeting teams fromthe U.S. and Europe inthe Global InvestmentResearch Challenge heldin New York on 1 May2008.To get to theNew York final theyhad first bestedteams from six localuniversities and threeMainland universitiesin November 2007to win the GreaterChina championship.T h e H K B U t e a mthen scoopedt h e A s i a P a c i f i cc h a m p i o n s h i p ,which was held inApril 2008.A l t o g e t h e rm o r e t h a n 3 0 0s t u d e n t s f r o m80 universitiesworldwideparticipated inthe competition, which was introducedby the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)Institute in 2007. Hence, their analysisconcludes that the current stock price ofCML could be undervalued.The New York showdownIn the first two rounds of thecompetition in Hong Kong, the team wasquite relaxed and enjoyed it as if it werea game. But it was a different story inthe final round in New York, “We feltnervous as we started to rehearse andprepare for the presentation,” says Amy.As winners, the HKBU team wereinvited to preside over the closing bellof the NASDAQ trading day on 2 May.Sophia describes this as “a wonderful andunforgettable experience... Not only is itunheard of to see Hong Kong studentshaving such an opportunity; it’s actuallyrare to see Chinese faces presiding overthe closing bell.”HKBU team extends their gratitudeto their advisors from the School ofBusiness, in particular Dr. AlexanderFung. Team member Andy Chau, whois also President of the HKBU’s StudentInvestment Club said, “Our sinceregratitude goes to HKBU for settingup the Investment Club which givesus invaluable hands-on experience ininvestment. With academic knowledgeas our backup, we can flexibly put intopractice what we have learnt.”“In analysing the stock, we read alot of news and information about thecompany. This gave us an understandingof how it is managed, its cost structureand development prospects, from thiswe were able to forecast its value,” saysSophia.Their analysis reveals that the impact“What’s more,” says Professor Ho,“Our competitors this time in NewYork were champions from the U.S. andEurope, and most of them were MBAstudents.
