In the next four Pauris (8, 9, 10, 11) Satguru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj says thatthose persons who listen to the teachings of the Satguru with rapt attention and makethem dwell in their minds, gain the various stages of human development according tothe aim that they keep before them. Those who desire occult powers become Sidhs, Pirsetc. and those who desire worldly greatness become Sheikhs (the head of the clan) orkings.By listening to the teachings of the Satguru with rapt attention and by controllingthe mind from wandering away, one reaches the stage of Sidh – master of occult powers,Pir – the spiritual head of a community, surnath, or king of devtas – persons blessed withnoble qualities and purity of mind. By listening to the holy words of the Satguru, thedwellers on this earth, the nether world and the worlds above gain all degrees ofgreatness. By listening to and drinking in deep the Divine name, the balance of the earthand whole universe above and below is maintained.The inhabitants of the seven continents, oceans and spheres, and the dwellers ofthe nether world attain various stages of higher life. Or the seven continents the upperand the lower worlds, go on doing their duty in their fixed spheres. By listeningattentively to the teachings of the guru and drinking them deep in the mind one risesabove the fear of death. Sayeth Nanak His devotees who meditate on His name, anddrink in deep the nectar of the Divine life within, are filled with ecstasy and their facesbeam with Divine joy. No pain or sin can touch them. They rise above all pain and sin.
