The Central Council of the Tlingit and HaidaIndian Tribes of Alaska (Central Council) becamea federally recognized tribe in 1935 as part ofthe efforts of the Tlingit and Haida people tosuit the federal government for the illegal takingof our homeland. The role of Central Councilchanged over time from one of pure advocacy toalso being that of a provider of services to ourpeople. A “Six Point Plan” prepared by CentralCouncil and approved by Congress in 1970,called for programs in the areas of educationand skills training, industrial and commercialdevelopment, and housing assistance andfinancing.Tlingit HaidaCentral CouncilThe Central Council has a proud legacy ofproviding vital services to our people as well asadvocating improvement of public policies thatfurther the interests of Native Americans,especially those of the Tlingit and Haida people.Program Profiles
