<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong>Waste Management PolicyIntroductionAll wastes have the potential to cause environmental damage if not correctlymanaged. UK waste legislation takes what may be referred to as a ‘cradle to grave’approach; it ensures that legal control is exercised over waste from the moment itoriginates, to the moment <strong>of</strong> its final disposal. Waste is regulated whilst it is beingkept, treated, deposited and disposed <strong>of</strong>, and whilst it is being transported.PolicyThe <strong>College</strong> Policy is to establish systems to ensure compliance with the law andensure that options to minimize both waste production and disposal are fullyevaluated. The Waste Management Policy sets out targets for the coming yearshowing areas for improvement. It is designed to help achieve particular goals with aset <strong>of</strong> realistic objectives. The <strong>College</strong> is aware <strong>of</strong> its responsibilities and obligationsand encourages a positive recycling culture amongst its Staff and Students.Good PracticeThe following waste control measures are generally considered to be good practiceand form the base <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> Waste Management Policy.Waste Control MeasuresReduce, reuse or recycle waste wherever possibleProvide dedicated waste storage areasDo not mix special and non-special wastesDo not mix incompatible special wastesLabel all waste skips and containers with their contentsSkips and containers must be in good condition, not leaking and stored onhard standingDo not allow skips to overflow and remove skips regularlyUndertake regular inspections <strong>of</strong> waste storage areas and areas prone t<strong>of</strong>ly-tippingDo not dispose <strong>of</strong> (burn, bury or treat) waste on-siteObtain copies <strong>of</strong> licensed waste carrier and waste disposal or recyclingcompany certificatesOur targets for the next year are;To measure more accurately the general waste stream and to reduce theoverall volume going to landfill in 2012/1320
