Royal College of MusicEmissions & Discharges PolicyIntroductionThe RCM is committed to reducing releases of toxic, chemical and hazardousemissions and discharges to water, air and land by complying with all relevant legalrequirements to prevent the release of pollutants into the environment.AirThe College will monitor release of emissions to air, primarily from boilers located inthe central boiler house. All boilers undergo an annual service and maintenancecheck, where the emissions are tested to make ensure levels of certain substancesdo not exceed guideline limits.WaterThe RCM is aware of the importance of preventing pollution to surface water drainsand that these drains must carry only uncontaminated rainwater. Surface waterdrains can be contaminated with silt, heavy metals, chemicals, paints and oils. Foulwater drains are designed to carry contaminated waste water safely to a system orsewage works for treatment. Wash water from a mobile pressure washer must notbe discharged to surface water drains or soakaways, even if bio-degradabledetergents are used. Such discharges will be through the foul sewer (subject toapproval of the local sewerage company). All waste materials will be stored indesignated areas which are isolated from surface drains and bunded to contain anyspillages.LandThe RCM is committed to preventing spillage, incorrect storage of chemicals orwaste materials and unsuitable disposal activities. This can result in pollutantsseeping through the soil, causing serious harm to groundwater which is a vital sourceof drinking water. Our targets for the next two years are:Meet the carbon emissions targets in the RCM Carbon Management Plan: theRCM will reduce its carbon footprint by 34% by the end of the 2019/20,compared with its baseline year of 2005/6Continue with installation of energy efficient luminaires, rationalisation ofluminaire switch/control circuits and incorporation of automated luminairecontrols to give an overall reduction of electrical and energy consumptionPromote pollution awareness for Facilities, Maintenance and Theatre Staff andmore generally for staff and students - September 20138
