Honor<strong>in</strong>g Endur<strong>in</strong>g Devotion to AnimalsHeritage Society for Animals members mak<strong>in</strong>g a differenceTheresa MarkovichLove <strong>of</strong> dogs <strong>in</strong>spires giv<strong>in</strong>gSee<strong>in</strong>g pengu<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Antarctica is one <strong>of</strong> Theresa Markovich’sfondest memories from her many travels. Mrs. Markovich,who celebrated her 95th birthday last fall, has experienced<strong>the</strong> excitement <strong>of</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g places all across <strong>the</strong> country and <strong>in</strong>every cont<strong>in</strong>ent.As a young nurse <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Navy from 1942 to 1949,Mrs. Markovich was stationed <strong>in</strong> several states. “I reallyenjoyed be<strong>in</strong>g a nurse and meet<strong>in</strong>g a lot <strong>of</strong> different peopleand help<strong>in</strong>g patients,” she remembers with a smile.One very special person who she met <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Navy was herhusband, Edward. The Markovichs married <strong>in</strong> 1949 and<strong>the</strong>n moved to California, where <strong>the</strong>y both earned degrees<strong>in</strong> education from San Francisco State University. Soon aftergraduat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y settled down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scenic community <strong>of</strong>Weimar, nestled <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn California foothills.Theresa Markovich is a devoted animal lover and has enjoyed <strong>the</strong>loyal companionship <strong>of</strong> dogs throughout her life.tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir trusted veter<strong>in</strong>arian, Dr. Virgil Traynor,(DVM 1961).Valu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> education,both Mr. and Mrs. Markovichdedicated <strong>the</strong>ir careers to teach<strong>in</strong>g.Mrs. Markovich taught nurs<strong>in</strong>gcourses at Sierra College for 25 yearsand loved her job. She notes, “I nevermissed a day <strong>of</strong> work!”The Markovichs also shared apassion for travel and visited manyplaces around <strong>the</strong> world—Alaska,<strong>the</strong> Antarctic, <strong>the</strong> Arctic Circle,Argent<strong>in</strong>a, Australia, Cape Town,Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Korea,New Zealand, Tahiti, Vietnam—toname a few.Ano<strong>the</strong>r passion <strong>the</strong>y shared was <strong>the</strong>ir love <strong>of</strong> dogs. Theywere especially devoted to boxers, German Shepherd Dogsand weimaraners, own<strong>in</strong>g several dogs throughout <strong>the</strong> years.Mrs. Markovich recalls <strong>the</strong> good times she had tak<strong>in</strong>g herdogs on early morn<strong>in</strong>g walks around <strong>the</strong> lake on <strong>the</strong>ir ranch.She enjoyed just be<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m.To keep <strong>the</strong>ir dogs healthy, <strong>the</strong> Markovichs made sure that<strong>the</strong>y received rout<strong>in</strong>e veter<strong>in</strong>ary care and were diligent about“It’s important to me to knowthat my gift to <strong>the</strong> school willsupport research to improve <strong>the</strong>health <strong>of</strong> dogs and scholarshipsto help educate tomorrow’sworld leaders <strong>in</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>arymedic<strong>in</strong>e.”When specialty care was required,he referred <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e. Mrs. Markovichcomments, “I was impressed with <strong>the</strong>excellent care my dogs received from<strong>the</strong> school and <strong>the</strong> exceptional way<strong>the</strong>y helped animals.”Dogs hold a special place <strong>in</strong>Mrs. Markovich’s heart. Theyhave enriched her life with loyalcompanionship and provided asense <strong>of</strong> security—someth<strong>in</strong>g shefound even more important after herhusband sadly passed away. Her love<strong>of</strong> dogs and o<strong>the</strong>r animals <strong>in</strong>spired her to provide for a gift to<strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e through her estate plans.She is honored by <strong>the</strong> school’s Heritage Society for Animalsfor her commitment.— Theresa MarkovichHelp<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>rs is <strong>in</strong>herent <strong>in</strong> Mrs. Markovich’s nature.
