Your monthly dose ofInspiration...ear Mummies,DHope this month has been a great onefor you! How are you all feeling? Septemberhas been a fantastic month for us. We areconstantly growing, blooming and flourishing. Our team is growing and we are expandingabove all! Thanks to you Mummies forconstantly supporting and providing for us.This month, I’d like to share with youinspiration based on the fact that I’m sureyou’ve had enough of anger, resentment, pain, tears, heartbreaks, self-destructivethoughts, anything negative/toxic and negativerelationships. We all go through feelingmoments of the above and hence, there is alot that we can do to change ourselves and ourlives and even our thoughts in moments of lifeand make it ridiculously amazing. Here goes:“1. Make a commitment to yourselfI (name),make a commitment to myself,To spend so much time improving myselfand my life that I have no time for worry, judgement, criticism, whining and complaining;to forgive, release and let go of my attachmentto any past struggles and allow everychallenge life sends my way to make mebetter not bitter. Starting now, I make acommitment to let go of what’s behind meand start appreciating what’s in front ofme;to let go of all the pointless drama, all the toxic relationships, thoughts andbehaviors that are present in my life andto constantly shift my focus from thebad on to the good; to make room inmy heart for love, happiness, peaceand tranquility and to create my lifefrom a place of infinite choices andpossibilities – the present moment, and no longer from a place oflimitations – the past.I commit tostaying true to myself at all timesand to never betray myself justso I can please other people.Icommit myself to give up ontoxic thought, behaviors andrelationships but never on myselfand my dreams. Starting nowand starting today, I will beginrebuilding my life and to itridiculously amazing.Sincerely,(name)Once you truly committo rebuilding your lifeand making it ridiculouslyamazing, nothing and no onewill be able to stand in yourway.2. Forgive, release andlet go of past hurts andresentmentsFill your heart with love.Release and let go of all thenegativity from your life. Trust that as you work onletting go of all the extra baggage that is weightingyou down, you will begin to feel lighter and you willgain a lot more clarity over your life. You will feelhappier and more at peace with yourself and theworld around you.3. Dreams won’t work unless you doAct upon your heart’s desire. Do the things you needto do in order to get where you want to get. Readthe books you need to read, contact the people youneed to contact, build the skills you need to build.Find a mentor. Dare to ask questions. Do whatever ittakes to move yourself closer to making your dreamscome true.4. Be good to yourselfLove yourself and be good to yourself because if youdo, the world around you will start mirroring yourbehaviour. Take good care of your mind, body, heartand soul. Exercise, drink plenty of water, eat healthyand delicious food. Nurture good thoughts. Act incompassionate and loving ways, towards yourselfand the world around you. Spend time alone. Look atthe plants, the sky, the stars, the moon and the trees.Celebrate the miracle of life. You have one life – this one right now – you mustlive it, own it, and especially don’t let other people’sopinions distract you from your path.”Source: thepurposefairy.comOn this note, Mummies, I bid you farewell and have aridiculously amazing month ahead! editorialFall has finally arrived…welltheoretically anyways. Fall for me hasalways been about cooler weather, digging out the heavy sweaters, and packingaway the BBQ in preparation for snow.Funny enough we actually uncovered our grillfrom its summer hibernation just last week. Iguess expat life in the Middle East obligesone to redefine their seasonal expectations,am I right?!With my looming due date only a few shortweeks away (Oct. 31st!) I have officiallydecided I am nowhere near ready for baby#2. My husband and I still cannot agreeon a name, the to-be nursery is still packedto the brim with boxes, and for the life of me Icannot find those wretched nursing bras I packedaway a few years back. The notorious babybrainhas already settled in and I haven’t evensaid ‘epidural please’ yet. Fingers crossed thissupposed ‘nesting’ stage occurs before baby. And with Halloween around the corner be sureto check out our Spooktacular party and costumeguide guaranteeing a ghoulishly good time for allyour little fairies and goblins!Happy October Mummies!Gina Pistoneco-editorbelieve, achieve, bECOmeNow with 3 locations!visit our new nursery indubai academic city today!mother, baby & child october 201310The Blossom Children Nursery provides an award winning early yearseducation experience with secure and stimulating environments where eachchild will blossom. What Do You Think? How do youfeel aboutsleepovers? Ifyour child toldyou about aslumber party, would you becomfortablesending heror him to afriend’s housefor the night?Nadia Sarie says: “This woulddepend on your child’s age andmaturity level and whether ornot I know the friend and his/herparents. I would also like to knowof approximate bed times and theparents of my child’s friend wouldneed to respect a no-fast food-rule.Noor Aya feels that although thiswould depend on the age of thechild, she worries that these days itis difficult to trust the world, eventhough she trusts her child, so shewould have a hard time sendingher child to someone else’s homeat night.“Sleepovers are great fun at all ages,”says Sheryl Sidharth Dhas, “butcan be a bit overwhelming for verysmall children. For a younger childI would be ok with a sleepover at arelative or close family friend’s placeas these are people that my child andI both trust and are comfortable with. For a sleepover at a friend’s place, Iwould have to know the friend andtheir family very well”.Sheeru Jeep feels that as longas we teach our children aboutlimitations and privileges, as well ashow to conduct themselves well, thensleepovers are absolutely fine.Ask Now!My 16-month-old sonhas started biting hisclassmates at nursery; Idon’t know how to gethim to stop! Help!-Anonymous Mummymother, baby & child october 2013Dear Anonymous Mummy,According to Dr. Vincent Iannelli, biting isnormal toddler behaviour and there aresimple things you can do to get him to stop.- “Try to intervene or distract him and say'no bite' firmly, but calmly, if he is about tobite.”- After he bites, move him away fromthe other child and ignore him for a fewminutes,” he advises.- Keep to a good routine all day, including12meals, naps, and playtime, and make sure he isgetting a good night’s rest.“It can also be helpful to know why he isbiting,” explains Dr. Iannelli. “Is he overtired orteething? Perhaps another child tried to takehis blanket or toy.” Sometimes this behaviourcould be in response to something that may behurting or bothering him.Source:Vincent IannelliBoard certified pediatrician & Fellow of theAmerican Academy of PediatricsAuthor of The Everything Father's First Year Book

Preparing Body for BabyDe-stress with AATgetting readyPreparing Body forBaby!By Stephanie McGuinnessThe topic of fertility can be asensitive one for women and evenmen nowadays. With our busyschedules and tiresome checklist, the working family can forget attimes that wanting a baby the firstor second time around may notcome so easy.Although the global population isat an all time high, approximately7 billion, the ability to conceivefor many can be sadly challenging.According to the CIA Governmentwebsite “Global fertility rates arein general decline and this trend ismost pronounced in industrializedcountries, especially WesternEurope”.mother, baby & child october 201328Dr. DavidRobertson is aconsultant inreproductive medicineand Group MedicalDirector at a clinic inJumeirah, Dubai. Hestates “fertility issues are a bit morecommon in the Middle East. We usually

Excessive drinking as well asunnatural processed foods and junk canalso have the same negative impact onthe body.mother, baby & child october 2013say that 1 in 7 couples are affected whereas hereit is about 1 in 6”.Empirical data can be hard to obtain indeveloping countries and living in the Gulf isno exception. Although the medical facilities inthe Gulf can be of Western standards, factualdata is important to understand why coupleshave trouble conceiving and what measures canbe taken to prevent it. “Demographic reportsare certainly more difficult to come by- datacollection is far less developed than many othercountries and there are particular difficultiesdue to the fluid nature of a multi-nationalpopulation”.Dr. Robertson explains that the increasingnumbers of women with the endocrine disorderPCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and menwho have low or zero sperm count are mostcommon. More positively- lifestyle choiceshave a very big impact in life quality overallwhich can assist in falling pregnant. The basicrecommendations include a healthy diet for bothparties and regular moderate exercise to createa good balance. The World Health Organizationclaims that “Smoking Can Damage sperm anddecrease fertility” which is being used as atobacco free initiative along with the European30There is great hope though, as Dr.Robertson reassures us that “it can takea perfectly healthy couple months toconceive. Up until the age of 35, 84%will conceive in their first year of tryingand half of the rest in the second year. Acouple should wait a year before seekingadvice. If the woman is older than 35then they should wait around 6 monthsbefore seeking a consultation”.Even treatment for women over 35 hasproven to be greatly successful eveninto their 40s and only a “relativelysmall portion end up having complextreatment like IVF”.Each case is individual and can alwaysbe influenced by a number of factors. If seeking advice is important to visitspecialists in the field instead of takingadvice from friends or loved ones. “Thenumber of treatments available and theirlikelihood on success have increasedgreatly over the last 20 years so we nowhave solutions to many problems thatwere previously untreatable”.Overall, the future can always lookhealthy for conception if we take goodcare of ourselves both inside and out.Pregnancy can be influenced frombiological, environmental and evenemotional factors. As Dr. Robertson says,“be realistic and stay positive”.Source:Dr. David Robertson+971 4 705 5055Group Medical DirectorDubai, UAE

on the way | Healthy Vegetarian Dietmother, baby & child october 201336MBC: What can you tell expectantmums about the heath of their baby ifthey decide to continue their vegetariandiet throughout pregnancy?Laura: The most important thing when you arepregnant, and indeed outside of pregnancy, is tolisten to your body. We are all very different andour nutritional needs also vary, what really feedsand nourishes one person may leave the nextperson feeling weak and lethargic. If a pregnant woman feels good eating vegetarianfood during pregnancy there is absolutely noreason why she cannot have a healthy pregnancyand a very healthy baby. Many people areconcerned about the lack of protein in a vegetariandiet but this simply is not true since protein frommeat sources are not easy for our body to absorb, and there is an abundance of protein in vegetariansources. For example, try adding Spirulina, a darkgreen algae in powder form to your smoothies asit contains 65 percent protein where as red meatcontains only 25 percent.MBC: What foods should vegetarianexpect mum’s try to incorporate intotheir daily diet in order to maintaina healthy balance of protein for bothmother and baby?Laura: Eat a variety of nuts and seeds, chia seedsare wonderful as they are rich in essential fattyacids, protein, minerals and vitamins. Incorporatea variety of whole grains like brown rice, wildrice, oats and buckwheat all of which have goodamounts of protein. Quinoa is a full protein sourcefor vegetarians and should definitely be included.Lentils and beans are also important but easy onthe soy products as it is high in phyto-oestrogen.Incorporating tofu a couple of times a week is finebut don’t take soy milk. Instead try almond milk, this is very nutritious and full of protein.MBC: Are iron deficiencies morecommon during pregnancy formothers who are vegetarians?Laura: Iron deficiency is always a concernfor pregnant women but it comes downto good nutrition rather than just eatingcopious amounts of meat! Kale forexample actually has more iron than redmeat so this is a must to include in yourdiet. Spirulina also has good amounts ofblood building iron. If you are particularlysensitive to low iron then taking a naturalsupplement is beneficial, I like the liquidiron by Floradix yeast and gluten freevariety.MBC: How can expectant mumsincorporate omega 3’s into theirdiet?Omega 3 is vital for brain developmentand function, proper growth and a healthynervous system of the baby. Try snackingon chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkinseeds. If you find it difficult to includethese nuts and seeds in your daily routineyou can always take a supplement butensure it is of a good quality with nomercury content if opting for a fish basedsupplement.Reference:Laura HollandWorld VegetarianDayOctober 1Holistic Wellbeing Consultant & Nutritional TherapistS.A.C Dip (Nutritional Therapy & Clinical Nutrition)Food for Life, Dubainutrition_inshallah@ymail.com

top tips for mums!Simply LaughterBy Nathalie HodgsonChildren traditionally spent theirchildhood in play, when theylearned about life and alsodeveloped emotional skills that we nowcall Emotional Intelligence. Researchers tellus that children laughed or smiled morethan 400 times a day during play with theirfriends.Today’s children, in our fast-changingworld, are increasingly faced with differentrealities. There is an increasing needfor laughter and playfulness in childrenof all ages, as they strive to meet thedemands of school, college and parents.Laughter can help to cope with the alltoo formalized educational systems andcompetitive lifestyles. The technique inducts more laughter intochildren’s lives, without the need for humor orjokes. It helps to eliminate the factors that causestress levels among students and hinder healthyrelationships.Major stress factors in childrenLow Concentration: Studies show a huge leap inAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),a disorder where the children are extremelyhyperactive and find it difficult to concentrate. In the US, 1 in 18 children suffer from ADHD andhalf of those are being treated with the psychostimulantdrug Ritalin. Even Paulo Coelhoagrees with this statement !Now let’s take a look at what our childrencan teach us……• To love unconditionally: Children onlysee the good in people. Somebody oncesaid when you see good in other peopleyou drop your judgment and your criticism. That’s what children do, they see onlygood in other people. That is why it feelsvery uplifting being around young children.• To smile: Even the most negative ordepressed person will be lifted up when achild smiles at them.• To believe: That miracles do happen, otherwise how else can we explain thefeeling we experience the first time wehold our baby.• To forgive: Our children will forgive us foranything. They may be angry with us for a shortspan of time but in the end they will hug usand say “I love you, Mommy.”• To be fearless: Children have no fear. Theycan do anything. Fly like Batman, swim sevenoceans with the sharks, touch the moon withtheir chubby fingers .So let’s use this time with our children to learnfrom them. And when we do teach them, let usbe careful. Let us ensure that we do not teachthem all our fears and prejudices, our constantwanting for bigger toys, shinier objects that wehope will make us happy temporarily. We look forward to hearing what lessons youhave learned from your child and what you feelwe should not teach our children.Sharon Monteiro believes that all childrenshould be treated as guides to their parentsand she helps parents uncover the lessonstheir children are teaching them. the new family | Eid Al AdhaAll over theworld, Eid Al Adhais celebrated differently, but one thing remainsconstant; it is a joyous occasionwhere people wear their fanciestclothes, eat delicious food, andgive gifts and love to their friendsand family, and thanks to God.In Pakistan, for example, Muslimscelebrate for 4 days. During thistime, Muslims attend morning‘Eid prayers’ and attend sermons. Some families will sacrifice ananimal (if they are financially able)and they will share it with theirfriends, family and those who areless fortunate. In Egypt, Eid Al-Adha is alsocalled as ‘Eid El-Kbeer’ or the‘Big Eid’ and they refer to theEid Al-Fitr (which comes afterRamadan) as ‘Eid El-Sgheer’ orthe ‘Small Eid’. Other MiddleEastern countries also refer tothe two festivals in the sameway. In Egypt, Muslims also go toEid prayers in the morning, andattend celebratory feasts duringthe day. It is important to give tothe poor during this holiday. In Morocco,Muslims celebrate forthree days, and it is similarto other Muslim countries withmorning prayers, animal sacrificeand sharing their food with thoseless fortunate. In Bangladesh, however, it is absolutely mandatorythat an animal is sacrificed, andeven the animal’s age and healthmakes a difference when theanimal is chosen. The sacrificesstart the first day of Eid during themorning prayers, and continue forthree days.Although in some countries thecelebrations may differ, the clothesmay not be the same and somethings are more important thanothers, all Muslims who celebratedo so joyously and with ultimatedevotion.Eid Mubarak! the new family | MumtiplesTaming aheadstrong Duoby Mariam Hassan & Familymother, baby & child october 201360When it comes to parenting styles,I must admit that I read a lot ofadvice on the internet and oftenthe recommended techniquesseem to contradict each other:time-out, total-love-and-care,laissez-faire, authoritativedisciplining, you name it! Goneare the days when moms and dadswould just follow their naturalinstincts, seek guidance from theirown parents once in a while andgenerally just hope for the best.Personally, however, I feel that findingthe right parenting approach withtwins, especially if they are your firstborns,is quite different from singletons.Being blessed with twins or more could belikened to starting your education in highschool straight-away rather than completingprimary school first. Patience is a virtue whenyour toddler throws a public tantrum,so just imagine what it takes to dealwith two. What I have learned frommy strong-willed twosome, however,is that their behavior reflects my own, meaning that they are more likely to becooperative, when I manage to keep myown stresses under control. After havingtried a number of disciplining toolsthat often resulted in power struggles,I have decided to adopt an approachthat focuses on cooperation instead.Yes, you must make sure that roles areclear and your children know that you,the parent, are in control. But givingthem choices generally helps. Facedwith the options of either cleaningtheir room or not being read a bedtimestory, my twins choose the story everytime. On another note, it helps to havetime –two headstrong little architects oftrouble are more likely to execute theirmischievous plans if left unattendedrather than if you make time for them- time to run at the beach, time to actdress up and act silly on Halloween, time to talk and time to listen. At the end of every day, once the twinsare snuggled up and sleeping soundlyin their beds, I am overwhelmedwith happiness, if we managed toget through the day without majortantrums, and as I tenderly place myhands on their little hearts at night, Ilove them more than ever! And really, that is all that matters!

Asking About WarThe Healthy Homein focus: childWhen Your ChildAsks About War…By Stephanie McGuinnessmother, baby & child october 2013To mark the International Dayof Non-Violence (October2nd), Mother Baby & Child hasdecided to touch on the topicof war as a basis for discussionwith our children.72International Day ofNon-ViolenceOctober 2The ‘daily fret’ as mothers is mostlyfocused our children’s general welfaresuch as their health, safety and stablefuture prospects. Every stage in our children’slife is about helping them to rationalize theirenvironment step-by-step.If our children are symbolic of what remains asinnocent in this world, how then do we try andexplain the occurrence of war and why suchinjustices are taking place? There poses two great challenges when facedwith this situation. The first would be the topic of why war? is

in focus: childhard enough to dissect even when inconversation with adults. The surroundingthemes of war such as killing, death, violence and injustice are not heart-warmingexamples that we want to unfold as realitiesto our little ones.UAE based Paediatrics DevelopmentSpecialist Dr. Vinita Shrivastava informs usthat “Most children become aware of theconcept of war from the primary schoolyears age, however they may struggle tograsp the complexities of conflicts due toemotional immaturity”. She states that it isour duty as parents to teach our childrenabout moral and legal consequences ofthings such as violence for them to gainfurther understanding regarding war initself.UAE based mother and writer Ms ValeriaCamerino states that “experiencing war is abig trauma for any child. And that it affectsa person’s emotional stability and futuredevelopment”.Naturally, we may fear that touching on suchthemes could leave our children traumatizedand instead opt for ignoring the matter inorder to ‘protect’ them. Ms. Valeria statesthat you should simplify it by just teachingthem “that war is wrong”.Dr. Shrivastava emphasizes the importanceof continuous communication so that youcan explain any thoughts they have on thematter.“Be observant if the child’s thoughts beginto seem to display discrimination of anyform. Furthermore look for any suddenchange in their behaviour or the companythey keep especially during adolescentyears.”Many of us recall stories from wars that our owngrandparents experienced and they might haveseemed entertaining and triumphantly inspiringrather than daunting. “Educating children aboutwar has an overall positive effect as war plays anintegral role in our past”.The new challenge in parenting is theuncontrolled content of the internet whichcan expose children to negative imagery andinformation that we need to be cautious of. Newtechnologies such as computer games as wellas films are basic examples of how children getintroduced to violent themes which we mustclosely monitor in order for them to grow with ahealthy ideal of the world.Teaching our children about love and peace alsostarts in the home. Maintaining a peaceful livingenvironment also builds a strong foundation fortheir moral understanding of right and wrong.Familiarizing our children with notorious peacecampaigners are encouraging ways to positivelyreinforce the meaning of peace to them.Mohandas Gandhi was the ultimate example ofhumility and non-violent expression stating “Aneye for an eye will make the whole world blind.”Source:Dr Vinita ShrivastavaDevelopmental and Behavioural Paediatrics+971 5 550 85656vinita9@doctors.org.uk

mama me-timefood for the soulRoad of Discoveryto My Inner HeavenPart 2by Darine Hounaine Williamsmother, baby & child october 201386Divinity. Peace. Tranquility.Happiness. The trip Ijourneyed in Bali, Indonesiawas absolutely exhilaratingand beautiful. Please seemy Part 1 write-up where Iventured into my first few daysin Bali and at my wonderfulretreat that I stayed at whereI met an amazing group ofindividuals. You can read it onwww.motherbabychild.comunder September 2013’s issuein the same section as here.A journey of finding innerhappiness and what it is allabout was the purpose of thisexpedition. I am excited andequally eager to share the restof my journey with you.Happiness was found in different waysand through different experiences andjourneys I endeavoured. I met lovelyvillage families when we visited the villages withour bikes traveling up and down hills where Isadly completely injured myself biking throughmetallic poles! I think I thought I was SuperWoman! Moving along, I met a lovely Balinesefamily in a small village through my bikingexpedition who were so receptive and admiringto the group of girls I was with and I. They werewelcoming and very smiling and upbeat. We

mama me-timelong relaxing day of yoga, trips and food.Oh the life! In Bali, I learned to eat so muchand in a healthy fashion. Balinese are veryflavourful people and really enjoy food withsavour, delicious spices and light cooking. Ithoroughly enjoyed the different sea foodand chicken that they love and really misstheir exotic salads and desserts.played yoga with them and danced withthe little children. The mother was laughingand enjoying the scene while her children, relinquished in the joy and love they received.Sadly however, the mother had clear wrinklesand lines on her face, tired from the days sheworks hard every day to feed her family. Thevillage has its own culture and the situation isvery poor. The family work hard together tomake the most out of their situation. It was avery humbling and heart-warming experience. In Bali I also experienced something ratherinteresting—poo coffee! Apparently Baliis known to make delicious coffee andchocolates. Quite the like if you ask me! Aspecific animal they have there is bred topick out the best coffee beans and eat them, extracting them from below. The Balineseferment these beans extracted from theanimal and finally the coffee is drank—oneof the most expensive coffees in the world. They are well known for coconut coffee andmoreover many more flavours. That was quitean experience.Bali is known for its night life, bars, andrestaurants. We experienced quite that andenjoyed the delicious exotic cocktails after aIn Bali I learned of the importance oflaughter and fun and that it’s ok to keepeating without guilt and how easy it is tofeel relaxed again. I learned on how vitalit is to take breaks and keep sane in thisfast-paced life we live in today. Learningabout happiness through the Balinesesmile, their attitude and their kindness andwillingness to help, evoked a feeling ofadmiration within me and truly made mefeel just how much a student I am in thislife—our so called school. I learned aboutthe importance of loving those aroundyou and treating them like brothers andsisters truly and whole heartedly, enjoyingyour surroundings and making the best ofthem and that feeling true happiness withinevokes a certain energy that is easily felt, seen and transcended to others includingnature. If we all collectively accumulated thispositive divine energy, felt it heart felt andexerted this energy, the world would be agreener healthier place as a whole. To sum up this journey, I tattooed“Happiness is everything” in my arm and“Love. Live. Laugh” on my upper back. What a lovely end to a great trip! I highlyencourage you Mummies to endure thisamazing expedition yourself and learn athing or two about happiness, peace andtranquillity—it may just be the thing youneed!87mother, baby & child october 2013

mama me-timeEditor’s Picks: In Focus -SpasThe Curemother, baby & child october 2013When I arrived at the Cure I was immediatelygreeted warmly by the staff and did not haveto wait long before I was escorted by my spatherapist Nesha to the treatment room. Asoon as we got there, she explained the entiretreatment to me so I would know what toexpect. The first step, she said, was exfoliation. And thus began the exfoliation. As I started tothink that this may be the most difficult part ofthe treatment (As Nesha had informed me that itwas quite rigorous), When the massage startedshortly after the scrub, I realised that, I honestlythought to myself, “is this my punishment forhaving cellulite??” I then reminded myselfquickly of the ‘no pain no gain’ philosophy. When I announced that it was a little painful,Nesha informed me that the first few sessionsare the most difficult as the more cellulite youhave, the more uncomfortable the massage willfeel. I have to admit though; I could practicallyfeel the bumpy cottage cheese-like skinflattening out. After the massage, the therapistcovered my skin in a mask that aids in reducingthe cellulite, and then gave me a shoulder andscalp massage as we waited for the mask to soakinto my skin. Afterwards Nesha removed thewrap and peeled off the mask. She informed methat I should not shower for the next 12 hours inorder for the skin to fully take in the treatment. When I left, I honestly felt a little different. Ieven felt my skin was a bit tighter than usual andit felt great! Definitely recommended! To book, please call 04 391 648592Service:Ambience:Value for Money:Mother, Baby & Child says...Verdict: Although I was a bit hesitantabout the treatment as I have never doneanything like this before, I left knowingthat I would definitely be booking my nextappointment very soon!Treatment/price: I had the 90-minute KnockoutAnti-Cellulite Treatment Cost is AED 350Junior/450 SeniorPackage of 5 weekly treatments is recommended.1,200 Junior/1,500 Senior
