HIGHLIGHTS<strong>NUSTNEWS</strong> / OCTOBER <strong>2013</strong>131.4 M rupees collected inEarthquake Relief CampaignBalochistan was hit by an earthquake, measuring 7.7 atthe Richter Scale, on an unlucky morning <strong>of</strong> 24th September,<strong>2013</strong>, which resulted in the death <strong>of</strong> 825 people, <strong>and</strong>destruction <strong>of</strong> 21,000 houses. While the tremor affecteda total <strong>of</strong> 300,000 people. The earthquake has deprivedthe people <strong>of</strong> their shelter, food <strong>and</strong> other basic necessities<strong>of</strong> life. Such devastating conditions called upon thehumanity to come forward <strong>and</strong> share its munificent partin enlightening the way to light <strong>of</strong> hope, making the surroundingsblissful <strong>and</strong> assist those in lament to lead aprosperous healthy life again.Keeping this in mind, NUST Community Services Club(NCSC) came forward <strong>and</strong> tried its utmost to raise fundsto help their fellow beings in their state <strong>of</strong> despair. Theclub conducted its ‘h<strong>and</strong> to h<strong>and</strong> earthquake relief campaign’in NUST, H-12 from <strong>October</strong> 4 to 20. The campaigninitiated from the Main Office, NUST with the generouscontribution <strong>of</strong> the Rector, Mohammad Asghar <strong>and</strong> thePro-Rector, Dr. Asif Raza. Then continued the h<strong>and</strong> toh<strong>and</strong> relief campaign among all schools <strong>of</strong> NUST in whichstudents, faculty <strong>and</strong> the staff members contributedwhole-heartedly. Volunteer club <strong>of</strong> E&ME College alsoparticipated <strong>and</strong> contributed in the campaign.A bonfire <strong>and</strong> gig night was also arranged on 10th <strong>October</strong>,<strong>2013</strong> through which all the money collected wasmade a part <strong>of</strong> the total capital. The struggles <strong>of</strong> NCSClead to a successful collection <strong>of</strong> 1.4 million rupees whichwas then adequately used to buy food, tents <strong>and</strong> othernecessary stuff for 500 affected families <strong>of</strong> Balochistan.May Lord help those in pain <strong>and</strong> assist us in playing oureffective role in community services to make this world abetter place.Asad Umar talks aboutEffects <strong>of</strong> IMF Loan onPakistan’s EconomyProminent MNA <strong>and</strong> business administrator, Asad Umar spoketo the students in an exclusive seminar about the relationshipbetween IMF loans <strong>and</strong> Pakistan’s crumbling economy, on <strong>October</strong>24 at the SEECS Seminar Hall. The seminar was arranged bythe team <strong>of</strong> NUST Public Administration Society in collaborationwith Ms. Anum Waqar Mawaz, faculty member NUST BusinessSchool <strong>and</strong> was attended by the students <strong>of</strong> Public Administrationin NBS.The seminar intended to figure out the effects IMF loans havehad on Pakistan’s economy <strong>and</strong> how Pakistan can become independent<strong>and</strong> debt free in the future. Mr Asad Umar broke thetopic down <strong>and</strong> touched all the aspects <strong>of</strong> the economic conditionprevalent in Pakistan. He also clarified common misunderst<strong>and</strong>ingsabout the government’s decision to take the loansin the first place. Asad Umar said that Pakistan’s deterioratingeconomic health after 2008, forced the government to fall onexternal crutches provided by the IMF loans. External imbalances,poor trading system, thin revenue earning opportunities allpaved way to the embracing <strong>of</strong> foreign help. Simultaneously, healso provided feasible solutions that could help Pakistan st<strong>and</strong>up on its own <strong>and</strong> to eventually pay back all the loans <strong>and</strong> debtsit is submerged in. The session was extremely enlightening <strong>and</strong>Asad Umar kept it interesting by rounding up the controversialtopic in a light way.
