Two islands plunged into discord,Before eighteen years, still a minor,For the other one betrothal happens while even younger. The first son is the Dauphin (heir to the throne) François II. The widow is QueenCatherine de’ Medici. François II was a sickly figure approaching his 17th birthdaynot yet entering puberty. He was married to Mary Stewart (the future and tragic MaryQueen of Scots), herself only a tween at the time. She would be wife to François inan unfortunate and childless marriage. François II died just before his 17th birthday. He fulfilled many of the expectations of the prophecy further making Nostradamusthe talk of (and in some case the brunt of threats from) the courts of Europe.Other elements of this famous quatrain would continue to reveal themselves inthe following years. Mary Stuart, without any children, would return to Scotland andbecome Mary Queen of Scots. This would throw the two island kingdoms (alludingto England and Scotland) into discord over a power struggle between Mary and the“childless” Queen Elizabeth I of England. If the latter remained a virgin queen, shewould have to surrender the English throne to Mary. With François expired, the throne was left to the adolescent 11-year-old CharlesIX. He’s the even younger one mentioned in line 4, later betrothed to Elizabeth ofAustria at age 11. Three years earlier than Mary Stuart’s betrothal at age 14 toFrançois, whose testes never descended.***Sixteenth October 1565 is the date Nostradamus signed at the end of his dedicationletter to the finished Almanac for 1566. In that Almanac he may have signed off on hisdate with eternity as well. There’s a list of one-liner predictions for every day in theforthcoming year. The prediction set for 1 July 1566 was “strange transmigrations”i.e. death. Nostradamus missed his appointed demise date only by a few hours, dying a little over eight months after composing his prophecy in October just beforesunrise on 2 July 1566.***
