Lois Njagi of Hands off Our Elephants campaign show-cased this campaign, which is tryingto bring awareness of the plight of elephants in Kenya.John Mbaria and Salisha Chandra observed that in the case of KUAPO, poaching is seen as asymptom of the larger problems of the nation. When communities turn and begin tosupport and work with poachers, as is happening in some parts of Africa, then the problemis much bigger than just poaching.‘Community leaders say that were they to get real benefitsfrom wildlife, they would zealously protect them frompoachers in the same way they guard their livestockJohn Mbaria (ANAW-KUAPO) & Salisha ChandraThey observed that wildlife tourism accounts for over 70% of tourism revenue in manyAfrican countries, including Kenya. KUAPO strongly believes that conservation is aboutaddressing the people, as that is where the problems are and where the solution lies.Consideration of these campaigns should be on the realization that at community levelpeople are looking for two things - recognition for their offer of land (benefits) andcompensation for the loss brought about by interaction with animals.RESEARCH ANIMAL WELFARE EDUCATIONPresentations1. The case of Animals’ Angels in India, a program that seeks to ensurecommunity engagement in addressing poor transportation is a good lesson for Africa.Sophie said it has succeeded in building partnerships with communities, nationalorganizations and international agencies. This, she noted is a good case for learning thatcan be applied to Africa.Diana Hulme of the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) noted thatReport of The 1 st International Pan African Animal Welfare Alliance (PAAWA) 2013 Page 26
