For a man who enjoys history asmuch as David Smithwick, it’s onlyappropriate that he has helpedshape it at St. Francis. A familiar andbeloved face in the hall and classroom for25 years now, Mr. Smithwick has sharedhis great love for all things historical withtwo generations of students, often teachingthe children of his former St. Francismiddle schoolers.Before joining the Middle School facultyin 1986, he earned a living in theantiques business, specializing in jewelryand silver. Now he polishes young mindswith a working knowledge of a world goneby, stressing to his eighth-grade studentsthat it is not enough for them to simplyknow “a bunch of facts.” Instead, theymust be able to do something with thatinformation. And what a plethora of informationMr. Smithwick has imparted to hisstudents in the last 25 years. He’s taughtTexas history, American literature, LatinAmerican studies, geography, typing, andreligion, to both seventh- and eighthgraders.He says he especially loves teachingthis particular age group, because they“keep me young and on my toes.”To bring the past to life in his classroom,Mr. Smithwick also stays on his feet.Each summer, he takes a few weeks to hitthe highways of Americanhistory through visitsto national and stateparks, museums, andhistoric sites. In his owntravels and unendingstudy, he employs thesame educational philosophyhe shares withhis students: “to alwaysquestion, investigateand come up with one’sown ideas rather thanjust accepting the standardversion of things.”Twice nominatedU.S. History Teacher of the Year by the LadyWashington Chapter of the Daughters ofthe American Revolution, Mr. Smithwickhas also been recognized as an OutstandingHistory Teacher by the Texas State HistoricalAssociation. He believes strongly inadvanced professional development andholds membership in both the Nationaland Texas Councils for the Social Studies,as well as the World Affairs Council.He also has traveled the country to attendnumerous notable conferences, includingthe week-long Eisenhower Institute atGettysburg College and “The Constitutionin U.S. History,” an institute sponsoredby Humanities Texasand the NationalEndowment for theHumanities.With a bachelor’sdegree in psychologyfrom EmoryUniversity and graduate-levelcourseworkcompleted at the Universityof Houston’sCollege of Education,Mr. Smithwick understandsthe power ofschooling. But he alsoappreciates a moresubtle power—humor—citing it as “probablythe most useful teaching tool thatI possess.” He employs it for everythingfrom teaching about George Washingtonto managing classroom behavior.It’s just one of the ways Mr. Smithwickhas established his legacy here, and wecongratulate him on completing 25 yearsof exceptional teaching at St. Francis.Here’s to 25 more!25 YearsWith David SmithwickAnnual report 2010–2011 37
