Introduction<strong>Henleaze</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Club</strong><strong>Angling</strong> Section Operations & Bylaws1.1 <strong>Henleaze</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Club</strong> (HSC) manages a stock of general coarse fish at <strong>Henleaze</strong> Lakesubject to the <strong>Club</strong> objective. Facilities are provided to approved individual anglers forrecreational fishing. These individuals together make up the <strong>Angling</strong> Section and are AssociateMembers of <strong>Henleaze</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.1.2 The Water. <strong>Henleaze</strong> Lake is not a commercial fishery. The primary activity at the Lake isopen water swimming and management of the water for angling is on this mixed-use basis. Thus,fish stocking density will be lower than at a typical commercial fishery. The water is managedaccording to the Environment Agency publication “Freshwater Fisheries & Wildlife Conservation –a good practice guide”.1.3 <strong>Angling</strong> Management. The affairs of the angling section are managed by the <strong>Angling</strong> SectionSubcommittee which is responsible to the HSC Executive Committee. The <strong>Angling</strong> SectionSubcommittee includes representative fishing members and all fishing Bailiffs. The HSCExecutive Committee appoints fishing bailiffs for the day to day running of angling at the Lake.During the swimming season, which operates from May to September inclusive, there isto be no angling at the swimming end of the Lake at any time of the day or night.1.4 Disclaimer. The grounds of <strong>Henleaze</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Club</strong> are private and all persons who enterdo so at their own risk. The <strong>Club</strong> accepts no responsibility for injury, loss or damage whatsoeverand howsoever caused which may occur to persons on club property. It is therefore in theinterest of each and every angler, non-angling partner, and guest to ensure that he or she is fullycovered by insurance for personal injury or loss.1.5 Conduct and Behaviour1.5.1 If you continue to be in breach of any of the rules or bylaws after being warned or otherwiseare deemed to act with gross misconduct you may be expelled immediately from the <strong>lake</strong>property by any member of the HSC Executive Committee or officer (e.g. Bailiff) or employee(e.g. <strong>Club</strong> Lead Superintendent).. All such incidents will result in temporary suspension ofmembership and your key will be retained until the matter has been investigated by the <strong>Angling</strong>Section Subcommittee.1.5.2 Further to the outcome of the above investigation the HSC Executive Committee isempowered to expel or suspend any angler for misconduct.1.6 <strong>Swimming</strong> Membership There is currently a long waiting list for swimming membership.However, the HSC Executive Committee may give priority to applications for swimmingmembership from existing angling associate members over 18 years. Please contact a bailiff orthe secretary if you are interested in this.PLEASE NOTE - No anglers under 8 years of age or any non-angling junior can beadmitted to the Lake.2. Categories of Angler2.1 Senior Anglers2.1.1 Annual angling rights shall be available to anglers aged 18 years and over who satisfythe HSC Executive Committee that they will uphold the interests of <strong>Henleaze</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Club</strong>.The total number of such Senior Anglers shall be determined by the HSC Executive Committeefrom time to time.


~ 3 ~2.3.2 Each Summer Season Junior Angler must provide a disclaimer signed by his or herparent or guardian before being granted angling rights. The disclaimer shall include thedeclaration that the Summer Season Junior Angler holds a swimming certificate for at least 50m.This certificate or a copy must be produced when joining.2.3.3 The annual fee, which usually covers the period from the early May Day w/e to the lastSunday in September inclusive, shall be payable in advance and shall be determined by the HSCExecutive Committee from time to time. Summer Season Junior Anglers beyond the first in thesame family shall be granted a 50% reduction in the fee.2.3.4 All Summer Season Junior Anglers must check in with the Superintendents at the gateand leave their card. Summer Season Junior Anglers are not allowed on the timbered walkwaysunless they have been given permission from the Head Bailiff. Juniors must collect their card 30minutes before the Lake closes. This is very important.2.3.5 Accompanying Junior Anglers , 13 to 17 years old, may be Summer Season Juniors aswell at no extra charge. Please apply for form.2.3.6 Summer Season Junior Anglers are not permitted to introduce guests.3. Visitors3.1 Senior Anglers may bring in up to two Senior or Junior Visiting Anglers and one NonanglingVisitor as guests. Junior Visiting Anglers shall be 8 to 17 years of age and must havepassed a swimming test for at least 50m. for a visitor’s ticket to be issued see Bylaw 2.3.2. Guesttickets are good for 24 hours and may be purchased from the Superintendents at the gate orfrom the Head Bailiff. Non-angling Juniors are not allowed in the angling areas of the Lake.3.2 In accordance with the disclaimer that all Senior Anglers sign (Bylaw 2.1.4) guestsentering the grounds of <strong>Henleaze</strong> Lake do so at their own risk and can in no way hold theCommittee and members of HSC Executive Committee responsible for their safety or the safetyof their possessions. Senior Anglers have an obligation to point this out to their guests.3.3 Senior Anglers bringing in guests accept full responsibility for their conduct, safety and thesafety of their possessions. Guests shall be accompanied at all times.3.4 Junior Visiting Anglers are not allowed to be at the Lake during the hours of darkness andthey are not allowed on the timbered walkways.3.5 The cost of tickets for Senior Visiting Anglers, Junior Visiting Anglers and Non-anglingGuests shall be determined by the HSC Executive Committee from time to time.4. <strong>Angling</strong> Conduct4.1 Every angler shall hold the necessary rod licences as required by the EnvironmentAgency.4.2 All Anglers and Visiting Anglers must at all times carry their national fishing licence andtheir authority to fish at the Lake. These documents must be produced for inspection whenrequested by a Superintendent or Honorary Bailiff.4.3 All Anglers shall have the right to challenge other anglers to produce their authority to fishin the Lake.4.4 No fishing is allowed in the swimming area as defined by notices or from the first swimbeyond the <strong>Fishing</strong> Gate when the Lake is open for swimming.


~ 4 ~4.5 No angler shall stay at the Lake for more than 48 hours at one stretch. Bivouacs may notbe erected on the timbered walkways. The gents’ toilet is never locked and should be used. Theladies’ toilet is locked when no Superintendents are on duty and a key will be issued free ofcharge on application to the <strong>Angling</strong> Section Secretary and Treasurer.4.6 All fishing shall be with rod and line. No barbed hooks or micro barbed are to be usedat <strong>Henleaze</strong> Lake. All tackle must be dry before use in the Lake. All fish shall be handled withcare and returned immediately and alive to the water. Any lost angling lines must be reported tothe bailiffs promptly. Hook and Rig checks are made from time to time by the bailiffs andoffenders will be banned. Please make sure your Rigs are safe.4.7 Keep nets may not be used from April to September inclusive. No carp or other fish over2lbs shall be kept in a keep net at any time. All keep nets and landing nets must be thoroughlydried from their previous use before being brought to the Lake to prevent fish disease prior tofishing. The same applies to unhooking mats.4.8 Matches are not normally held and in any event shall only take place on those swims thatare not occupied.4.9 Every angler is permitted to use two rods. No rods shall be left unattended.4.10 No fish shall be brought in from other waters without the approval of the HSC ExecutiveCommittee and an Environment Agency Permit.4.11 Pike fishing, midnight 31 October to midnight 14 March, shall be by Senior Anglers onlyand shall observe the following practice: no live baiting at any time. The only permitted deadbaits are sea dead baits and trout. A minimum 15lbs line, wire trace, large landing net, unhookingmat and correct disgorgers must be used. If pike lures/spinners are used two of each treblebarbedhooks must be crushed, only one barbed hook per treble shall remain. The use of allleadcore, braided mainlines and shock/carp leaders (i.e. where there is any knot above thehooklink) on any baited rods is not permitted.. There shall be NO Night fishing for pike.4.12 Unhooking mats must be used when unhooking carp and taking photos. Mats must besuitable and safe to land carp. Carp Sacks are not permitted.4.13 No litter of any sort shall be left behind and all anglers shall co-operate to keep the Lakequiet, clean and tidy. Tackle may not be discarded at the Lake. All rubbish must be taken home– under no circumstances shall bread, paper or rubbish be thrown into the water or left on theground. Defaulters will be banned from the Lake.4.14 No umbrellas, rod rests or other objects shall be pushed between the boards on theboardwalks. Ground bait must only be used in reasonable amounts. Peanuts and tiger nutsare banned. No lead core or braided main line may be used.4.15 No guns or weapons are allowed at the Lake unless authorized by the HSC ExecutiveCommittee. No alcoholic drinks shall be brought to the Lake. No dogs are allowed. The MainGate to the Lake must be kept locked at all times when the Lake is closed for swimming and noSuperintendents are on duty.4.16 All anglers are expected to co-operate in the preservation of the wildlife and the naturalamenities at the Lake, conduct themselves in a sportsman-like manner, and observe goodangling etiquette.4.17 Members are encouraged to volunteer for work parties organised by the Bailiffs from timeto time.4.18 <strong>Fishing</strong> in areas which are out of bounds or in swims or areas which are temporarilyclosed is prohibited.
