A S T R I D EA DREAMSketchbook of Enrico Grassi’s LifeBIOGRAPHYWith thanks to Lucia Perrucci - Paolo Asciolla - Silvano Longagnani1

IntroductionWhy “Astride a Dream”?Often we live our lives through trying to find and secure ourselves by illusoryguarantees. We often pursue wrong ideals, we often make mistakes. We are oftentold what we should do, what we should know or where we should go. We are oftenforced to forget about our dreams. Thus, however, we take a step back.I prefer to move forward.I’ve learnt a lot throughout my lifetime, storing knowledge and experience as thebiggest treasure and following the voice of the wind – the voice that carries alongmessages and directions that few people can catch. That is the voice of my parentswho suffered hardship; the voice which one could read in my father’s look and hishands exhausted by toil; the voice of the people I’ve met and been proud to get toknow; the voice of the moon whispering dreams in my ear at night. That is how“Astride a Dream” was born, because a good story appears when we are able togallop towards freedom in our ability to listen, our ability to live and to dream evenwhen we start small or even from point zero. Having straddled my dream I’veovercome difficulties and gone a long way, far over the line. When a child I was oftenasked who I’d like to be when I grew up. And my answer was: “I’d like to be BIG!”Even today I’m still trying to become BIG, but when I look back I smile at the thoughtthat all the good things I wanted have been fulfilled and implemented. But this is not just “secret dreams”. Our life is full of myriads of mysteries, but I livein the point where the reality of my today’s being comes to an end, and this makesme feel enthusiastic. Due to my dreams I create millions of new ones that I neverleave behind and continue my galloping towards the horizon where the sun becomeseven bigger, and my dreams can be coloured with new emotions and turn intocastles, huge fortresses where I’ll be able to keep my intentions and designs.I’ll be a warden of my own life, like a warrior who uses honesty that has alwaysdirected me, as armour and rises, noble and proud, on his straddled dream.3

Part IWHN I WAS A CHILD1959Enrico Grassi is 11 months old: first steps towards his dreams5

Place where I was bornI was born at Mamorra, July 31,1958. Even today I still look atmy house and see a piece ofrock, a modest hovel solidlygrown into the ground, as if thehouse was born out of it.I was born at 7 a.m. at home, for it was a common practice atthat time, on a sunny summerday. The room I was born inabutted an old barn. At thathour no noise could be heardaround but for my first cry;that was the tranquility of thefirst sun rays and freshmorning air.The picture shows the house Enrico Grassi was born in7

Mamorra is situated nearby Viano municipality, in the province of Reggio Emilia. At firstglance at it one can get an impression of anagglomerate of old buildings, where peoplelive cultivating the land and ranching cattle. That is the land I love, the land where allpeople live in harmony and where poverty ismore natural than wealth up to an extentwhen it acquires the form of the real balancethat ensures a stable tranquil life that is onlytested by dry soil in summer and fragile soilin winter. The ground surface on the hill isThe commune of Vianoslanting, which formed our character. When I reached 3 yearswe moved to Visignolo Township that belongs to the commune of Baiso (RE).The ground of the hillVisignolo township, the commune of Baiso (RE)The bakehouse used by Visignolo residentsMamorra township, the commune of Viano (RE)8

MY FAMILYMy mother, Paolina Gambarelli, ahousewife, was a delicate lady whopossessed inborn love for a familylife. My father, Emilio, was a strongman, a peasant, who created myfuture from the land with his ownhands by teaching me the secret ofendurance, patience and ability towork hard. The parents: Paolina and EmilioI grew up along with mybrother Antonio who is threeyears younger than me. Afterschool we would spend the restof the day on the hill runningtogether. We would spendhours playing football even inthe house or in the kitchen thatabutted our wine cellar. I stillremember the smell of youngwine as we used to have fun bytramping grapes with our feet (although it was not that easy!), tasting must andmixing its smell with the aroma of revelry on those days when vintage wascelebrated. But for a kid every day could be a holiday: it was enough to kick andrun after the ball to make you laugh. The two brothers: Antonio (to the left) and Enrico (to the right)9

RUNNING AFTER THE BALLThus I was growing up helping my parents to look after the animals and playingoften in and far out of our house, up to the parish church of Viano. Those wereuntroubled, carefree years of self-formation; the parish church wasthe altar of my sincere faith and aplace of a meeting for me and myplayfellows. We could run in thefields, in the woods, but ourgreatest joy was to run after theball. I remember that a footballmatch was the greatest reward ourpriest promised to us everySunday after the mass. The passionfor football was so strong thatevery sports ground in theneighbourhood was almost half ofour dreams for me and my friends, and this running after the ball represented theillusion of our running towards the future that consisted of juvenile and inspiringpromises entrusted to ourselves by us, little men. I wanted to become Big infootball, and my friends often called me Brighel (an outstanding German fullback). We would play till our lungs almost stopped breathing, and when we got tired wewould sit down on our bench. It waswooden and it stood under the trees, andgot beautifully covered with dry leaves inautumn. Often we played until it got dark, and were it not for our parents whostrictly called to order, we could definitelyplay under the moonlight. However, besides joy there was duty to be done, andon coming back home I had to take care ofthe cows, pigs and hens.13

Thus I lived through my childhood years, with my knees soiled all over, with myshoes worn out from running, with a puppy in my arms and with a look in the eyethat reflected a new zest: the zest of desired independence and freedom.Enrico Grassi and his big love for animals15

Part IIWHEN I WAS A YOUNG MANand looked far...Enrico Grassi17

MY YOUTHI grew up on a hill, and the life on such a territory is not that easy: it’s impossible tosurvive without hard work. That’s why I lived through all my adolescence at homewith my parents helping them, as it was in the childhood, to take care of theanimals. And I should say that partlybecause I was born by the barn andpartly because of the constant presenceof animals in my life from its very firstmoments I’vealways felt astrong loveand passionfor theminside. It wasn’t at all hard for me to feel at ease among them.Perhaps, I was learning fromevery living being that wasdifferent from me how tosurvive in this world bothphysically and spiritually. Ilearnt strength andendurance from the horsesby taking care of them, running with them longmiles in the fields, watchingtheir lives.Upper corner: Visignolo Township, Baiso. The symbol of protection at every housecome me. Così, la mia adolescenza scivolava dolcemente tra il canto degli uccelli eil fruscio del vento. The parish church in Viano20

In my studies I made up my mind to choose technically oriented subjects. Partly ithappened so because of my innate desire to get to the core of things, but mostlybecause I enjoyed joining knowledge in mechanics and electronics together. That’swhy I entered a state vocational training school, an establishment for industrialproduction, and continued my studies without bothering anyone. I was a quietstudent and placed at first rank the understanding of where and how I would beable to get a job and employ the knowledge I got in my everyday life. And no doubt I prefer toenrich my intellectual andspiritual background ratherthan build up my physicalbody, that’s why I’ve neverattached too muchimportance to mymusculature. But I must sayI’ve never lacked it! Itdevelops naturally on peoplewho work hard.Enrico Grassi: he’s never used hismuscles, and the life showed hewas right!21

MOTORSWhen I was a youth I adored cars like many others. It was not just another world Iwanted to get to know, it was not just a flush of speed. It was as if there was amechanism that got into me and broke out from me each time I heard the engineroar. These two shots – me on a red motorbike and coming out of my “custommade”car – are unforgettable.Enrico on his motorbikeEnrico’s first car- a second-hand Fiat L-500!22

MILITARY SERVICEFor every young man there comes the draft day. The pictures shown belowdescribe me perfectly well. I still remember those long-lasting military marches andthe time of standing guardthat seemed to last forever.Even dressed in militaryuniform I always remainedmyself, no matter if it was thesentry stairs or the stairs ofsome wall – there I am, likethe guard of my life, watchingeverything from a height aseagles which I adore.Above is Enrico Grassi at FanoEnrico Grassi on duty at keeping guard.Below Enrico Grassi on the stairs of afortress23

ENRICO’S SIGNSThere is something that has never left me – a voice that I heard and still findaround myself. This voice does not only lead me to newknowledge but mostly makes me askquestions. The signs I catch many would calljust thinking but I prefer to call them thevoice of the wind. These are the signs ofgood intuition: when I see a haycock or hearvoices talking to me if I’m eager to learnmore about the world, these signs are to melike the shape of the moon at night or mylucky star.A Sign for EnricoThe moon is a good adviserHay is a good omen27

In questo modo arrivo ameditare e a prendere forse ledecisioni più importanti. Chilo sa, se è solo un modo pertenersi ben ancorato ai sogni, per non lasciarli andare via. THE FOOTBALL GAMEWhen I played football I always gave all of myself to the game, and I also gave a lotto my team. Passion comes first and then comes official sponsorship. MY FAMILY: THE ONE THAT’SBEEN BORN WITH MEMy wife and I have given birth to Gabriele.Becoming a father is a natural thing: you becomeone when children are born; but to be a real fatheris a gift. I was lucky to be loved by my father, andI brought this gift of love to my son. My fathertaught me a lot of things and he used to say often:“Don’t treat anyone in the way you don’t want tobe treated”. On my side I gave my son the sameadvice, but I’ve also tried to pass on to him othervalues such as doing good to others is not only away of getting it back, but also if you havesomething special inside, you have to share itwith the world.Enrico Grassi and Alessandra Sassi ontheir wedding dayThat’s why one of my goalsI’ve been always attached tois trying to give as much asyou can without askinganything in return. My father was a goodperson, not always patientbut very wise. I hope I’m asmuch of a father to my sonGabriele and that I’ve set agood example for himoThe Grassi family: Gabriele, Alessandra and Enrico34

MY FAMILY: MYOTHER RELATIVESThe family I’ve extended from was a large one. My father was the fifth out of sevenbrothers and sisters. At first, when I was just born we lived all together, latereveryone chose their way little by little, and we parted. Indeed, as I’ve alreadymentioned above, my family moved to Visignolo Township in the commune ofBaiso after three years since I was born. I’ve been always close to my uncles andaunts. They lavished so much care upon me that I’m still deeply attached to them. The Gambarelli family (by his mother’s side), 199536

Due to aunt Egle’s stories (she was my father’s sister) I developed some qualitieswhile still in the childhood such as my calm and courteous character or my love foranimals when I helped in thefields or in the barn. She wasthe one to tell me I was born inthe room by the barn.Uncle Onildo and aunt Egle (EnricoGrassi’s father’s sister).I owe a lot to my uncle AngeloGambarelli, my mother’sbrother. He’s been as thesecond father to me, and he’sgivenme alotwithhisadvice.I’vealwaysstayedopento him,and hehelpedmeeachtime, evenwhen IEnrico Grassi e Angelo Gambarelli (fratello della madre).needed financial help, and not in the least I am who I am today due to him.37

MY MOTHERMy mother Paolina has always devoted herself to us. Not only had we all her timeand care, but also she sufferedreal hardship to afford at leastone outing into the sea for us.She was always ready to rollup her sleeves and work hard, doing several jobs at one time, especially in the times she hadto support the family all byherself. That’s why today Ithank her for the selfabandonment, for her givingall of herself to bring us up ashappy people. And indeed, due to her we were happy thenand we are happy today.Enrico and AntonioGrassi with theirmother by the seaMy mother todaygi41

ETERNAL LOVE FOR HORSESI love horses, due to my father, as well. I remember his favourite horse that looks somuch alike my pet Lion which I’m keeping today. FRANCESCO SASSI AND ALBINA FERRIALESSANDRA’S PARENTSThis is a magnificent family which welcomed me well at once despite myyoung age, especially Albina, who possessed open views in spite of themoral principles and foundations common at that time. I’m lucky tohave met them, and I hope they are of the same opinion about me.

WHAT ONE NEEDSElettric 80 and Bema are my successes. But it’s a long story how I’ve reached that, and, frankly speaking, it’s hard to tell how. Firstly, I should mention that a goodcompany is born when one uses good opportunities at the right moment and canwait. There’s no crisis if you thoroughly think everything over taking reasonabledecisions and never let your head whizz. I always recall a passage from the Bible, the story about Joseph who was able to interpret the Pharaoh’s dreams: he had adream about seven fat cows and seven scraggy ones. The seven fat cows meantseven years of plenty and the seven scraggy cows meant seven years of decline.Joseph advised the Pharaoh that he shouldn’t squander and consume all theresources at the time of plenty and that he should use the riches sensibly. Thus theywould be able to overcome the crisis. Whatever I do I always use my head: first, when staging and thinking over new ideas and then when planning and using myresources. And the most important and promising resources for me are mybusiness partners and the company’s staff. I have an open dialogue with them, theiradvance as workers and their development as personalities are crucial to me. Agood company must be prosperous and functioning in every small detail, and toreach that it must be positive; it must possess welfare and bear it.Frankly, I think reaching something considerable doesn’t happen without luckyconcurrence of circumstances, but sometimes I ask myself whether thesecoincidences happen by chance or whether their secret lies in the signs I catch. Asfar as my companies’ creation is concerned, this has been written about in a largenumber of articles with a detailed description. But I’m still here and I continue towatch, rejoice and dream. And travel, of course, as travelling nowadays is asynonym of professional growth, especially for me, and this is my true school. Ourlife is full of moments that can make you deviate from the intended course, and Ishare the opinion that often incompetent advisors can be your worst enemies whena heap of hypocritical assertions, mistaken decisions falls to you, and at somemoment these people advise that you should give up your dreams. Now then, atthis moment everything is in your hands! It’s necessary to move on and continueyour travel. As, I repeat it once more, travelling is our best advisor. And then, asalways, you have to continue to work hard because no one will come to help youout.

And myfriends are all different; some of them have always been by my side. Here are my wishes. And with them I look into thefuture with enthusiasm entrusting my strong spiritthat has encountered “tensile testing” and that hasnever left me up to present day. I look back andsee all the roads I’ve walked, the most importantof them, all the places I’ve loved and people I’vemet. My footprints remained on those roads, and Iknow that everythingI’ve gone throughwill not only remain inside of me, as if it washollowed out in rock, but will remain a ray of hopethat, while reminding me of the past, will continue tostir up the desire to look far, ahead, into the future.Having saddled my dream, I have lived my lifethrough and I’m still living. In the saddle of life I lookaround with a look full of emotions and continue my calm and clear way towardsthis desire to feel one day “BIG” with the same spirit as when I was a child, when Iwas a young man – the spirit of a noble and honest adventurer. I move on.
