1645-46] RELA TION OF 1644-45 101this I think is what should excite in a good heart thedesire to come to these lost lands ;to lose himself herein a holy manner, and to find in this world nothinglovable but God. If persons of merit, whose life isprecious to an entire Kingdom, expose themselveswillingly in the assault of a breach, which frequentlyis not reasonable ;and if the death of those who havestood in the van does not daunt a brave Nobility, interests of amost of whom are often incited but bytemporal honor or benefit, doubtless the conquestof so many souls, each of whom is a Kingdom forJESUS CHRIST, the prospect of an eternal reward, and the desire [183] of living and dying in theservice of a God who was the first to die for us, willhave a thousand times more force to sustain the courage of those whom Our Lord may send us, throughthe perils that must be encountered at any cost, ifwe wish to advance his glory in these Countries, where we see that it is his will to be adored. This is the only request that I make to Your Reverence on leaving these Countries, begging you toprocure that assistance for us, and to send us thosewhom God may select through you ;and in this hopeI shall conclude the present letter, begging you tocommend this Mission to the prayers of all ourFathers and Brethren, and to remember it particularlyin your own holy Sacrifices. This, my ReverendFather, fromYour Reverence sFrom the Huron country, this i^th of May, 1645.Very humble and greatly obligedservant in Our Lord,HIEROSME LALEMANT.
