The reduction of the<strong>com</strong>pression pressure from 250 bars to 35 barsproved to be the breakthrough, yielding the firstusable results from 1896.Modern Centurion Diesel aircraft engineThe Continental Motors Group has declared its <strong>com</strong>mitment to thediesel engine as a forward-looking drive concept for aircraft, asevidenced by the acquisition and inclusion of Centurion dieselaircraft engines in its product portfolio. In the summer of 2013 a newera for aircraft engines was initiated and looking back in the historyof propulsion systems we see famous engineers and theirinventions. Now, on the hundredth anniversary of hisdeath, Continental Motors is <strong>com</strong>memorating theGerman inventor and engineer, Rudolf Diesel, whoseintellectual achievements paved the way for a new driveconcept – even though he certainly never thought hisinvention would one day be used in small aircraft.Would Rudolf Diesel haveimagined…Young Rudolf Diesel...... that someone would one day have the ideaof using his “highly effective internal <strong>com</strong>bustionengine” to propel airplanes? Surely not.After all, his first diesel engine that was readyfor production weighed a cool 4.4 metric tons.Use in automobile construction, let alone theweight-sensitive aviation industry, wasunthinkable at the time.Now, in the year 2013, we are remembering the100th anniversary of the death of Rudolf Diesel,engineer and inventor. A fitting occasion to takea look at his life’s work and the principle namedafter him, on which the Centurion engines of theContinental Motors Group are based.Rudolf Christian Diesel was born in Paris toGerman emigrants in 1858. His talent wasdiscovered early. At the age of twelve, hereceived a prize from the “Société PourL’Instruction Elémentaire” for his outstandingachievements at school.After finishing school inAugsburg, Germany in 1872,Diesel decided to be<strong>com</strong>e a“mechanic” (engineer really).Following trade school andeducation at the industrialschool, he started his studiesat the Technical University inMunich, <strong>com</strong>pleting themin 1880.He then worked on thedevelopment of ice andrefrigeration machines at thefirm Linde in Paris. It wasthere that he received his firstpatent on a process for theproduction of clear ice in bottles.On February 27, 1892, Rudolf Diesel applied fora patent on a “new rational heat engine” fromthe Imperial Patent Office in Berlin. He therebylaid the foundation for his future developments.In his initial experiments, Diesel used petroleum.But as this fuel was not suitable for utilization,he then had to use gasoline in order to obtainignition. Using a converted carburetor, the fuelwas sprayed and blown into the <strong>com</strong>bustionchamber alongside air under high pressure.The pressure required was generated viaa <strong>com</strong>pressor, a so-called blowing machine.However, this proved to be very <strong>com</strong>plicatedand prone to faults.One of Diesel’s greatest problems at first wasthat some of the gasoline burned in the pipebecause the <strong>com</strong>pressed air became too hot.For this reason, multi-stage <strong>com</strong>pression andcooling were carried out. Nevertheless, the hotair had to be capable of igniting the (very rich)mixture blown into the <strong>com</strong>bustion chamber.In 1893, Rudolf Diesel began to develop thediesel engine in the MAN AG engineering plantin Augsburg. The first engines presented Dieseland his team with major problems. It was notrare for them to explode and endanger thelives of the developers. The problem lay in theinjection of the fuel. Diesel did not manage tosolve this until after a meeting withThe six months that had been estimated forthe development of the engine to a productionreadystate ultimately became four years,with the first operational diesel engine being<strong>com</strong>pleted in 1897. The thermal efficiency of thefirst diesel engine to be operated in 1897 was26.6 percent. Thermal efficiency refers to theeffective use of the fuel energy. For <strong>com</strong>parisonpurposes, the steam engine achieved around10 percent, modern car engines attain valuesof up to 45 percent, while large engines canreach over 50 percent.As part of a trial run for inspection purposes,Professor Schröter from the Technical Universityof Munich confirmed the engine’s workability toDiesel. It provided approximately 20 hp in powerand consumed substantially less fuel than otherengines of the period.The Dieselmotorenfabrik Augsburg factory wasfounded on January 1, 1898. The Diesel EngineCompany in London was founded in the fall of1900. At first, only stationary diesel engines werebuilt. It was not until 1903 that the first motorships were equipped with diesel engines.The powering of submarines was a particularfocus.Alongside numerous tiresome patent law suits,Diesel’s life was also shaped by his poor health.He was last seen alive on a ship in the EnglishChannel on September 29, 1913. The exactcircumstances of hisdeath are still unknown.In 1912, while he wasstill living, the numberof diesel engines in useor under constructionthroughout the worldreached around1,720,000. Over 100factories were workingon the constructionof diesel engines.“Dieseln” became aGerman verb.The use of dieselengines in carsoccurred for the firsttime in the years1923/24. Due to theirenormous weight<strong>com</strong>pared to gasolineengines, which hadalready been used topower cars for adecade, the deploymentof diesel engineshad not been possible. One reason for theirweight was the higher pressure occurring indiesel engines, which could only be controlledthrough robust construction. But the mainreason lay in the supply of the fuel. Dieselinitially used <strong>com</strong>pressed air for this purpose,which was only possible with elaboratesupplementary units. When using an injectionpump, the supplementary units are not requiredand the conditions for use in cars are fulfilled.Patent document for diesel engine of Rudolf DieselDiesel for aviationThe Packard Motor Car Company introduced thefirst diesel airplane in 1928. Hugo Junkerspresented the first diesel aircraft motor ready forproduction a year later. Its economical natureJunkers Jumo 205: first usable diesel aircraft engineJunkers Ju86K bomber of the mid 1930’s used theJumo 207 diesel engines.and its operational safety make the diesel engineappear to be a promising drive unit for airplanes.But despite the developments that dieseltechnology has undergone over the years, it wasfor a long time unsuitable for airplanes in generalaviation, due to its unfavorable power/weightratio.This disadvantage could only be eliminatedby the introduction of lighter materials, modernturbochargers and <strong>com</strong>mon rail technology.It is now possible to take advantage of theeconomical nature of diesel technology ingeneral aviation. Our Centurion engines aredeveloped based on mass-produced <strong>com</strong>ponentsfrom the automotive industry that haveproven themselves many times over.Due to the physical similarity of diesel andkerosene, they can be operated with both fuelsin any mixture ratio.However, before the diesel could enter the air,important development work was necessary toobtain the required aviation certificates.One example in brief :- electronic engine management system(FADEC), gear box with clutch and torsionaldamper, adaptation of the fuel system forkerosene (jet fuel) as well as various developmentsto the engine’s periphery and the engine<strong>com</strong>ponents.Installation of the Centurion engine in the Robin DR400Following years of development work, Centurionengines are now approved for the most <strong>com</strong>montraining airplanes, e.g. Cessna 172 and 206,Piper PA28, Robin DR400 and the DA40 TDIand DA42 Twin Star. The low costs for fuels andservice make Centurion engines of interest forflight schools, charter <strong>com</strong>panies and associationsas well as all pilots who wish to profit fromthese. They are also used in regions of the worldwhere the availability of leaded aviation fuel is notguaranteed. Finally, Centurion engines can alsobe operated using kerosene (jet fuel), which is amedium distillate of crude oil, like diesel, and isalso the standard fuel in the aviation industry.- The proportion of diesel used for cars inWestern Europe is now approximately50 percent, while the figure for trucks is95 percent.- Around the world, over 2,600 airplanes in thegeneral aviation industry are already flying withCenturion engines.Could Rudolf Diesel haveimagined it?www. While thecertification was <strong>com</strong>pleted in February of thisyear, the announcement was just recently made.The e-Spyder is an ultralight design with a singleseatcockpit held up by a fuselage boom ontowhich the small electric motor and propeller aremounted right above the windshield.The e-Spyder was developed and will be producedby Yuneec International, based in Kunshan, China.Recently, a U.S.-based <strong>com</strong>pany called GreenWingInternational took over the marketing, sales andsupport for Yuneec’s electric airplanes. Thee-Spyder design is expected to enter productionthis year. No one knows how long it will take beforethe design will be accepted under ASTM standards,but in the meantime the e-Spyder will be availablein the U.S. as an amateur built kit.DECEMBER2013GreenWing claims that the batteries that power theeSpyder can be fully charged in less than twohours, providing the capability of one hour of flightwith a 30-minute reserve. “It should be possible touse solar cells on the roof of a hangar to charge thebattery between flights such that the plane can beflown daily without requiring energy from the powergrid,” said GreenWing’s CEO Tian Yu.The Yuneec engine produces very little noise —51 db according to GreenWing. “This airplaneallows you to cruise effortlessly at 1,000 feet abovethe terrain and hear what is going on one the surface,”Yu said. The stall speed of the eSpyder is 24knots and its landing roll is just a few hundred feet,the <strong>com</strong>pany claims.An even more<strong>com</strong>pellingGreenWingproject is thee430, a sleeklydesignedtwo-seat LSA thatYuneec has flownGreenWing’s e430.since 2009.
