In the NewsMemorial Day Remembrance - “The Buddy Poppy”WWI, Ypres, Belgium, 1915...Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, M.D. writes “In FlandersField”, a heart-felt poem that vented all his anguished despair on the sight, sounds and realityof war. He was witness to the image of red poppies growing between the rows of crosseson Flanders Field. Crosses that were so recently placed on the graves of fallen heroes…Thissight was the same throughout Belgium, France and Gallipoli…WWI, France, 1918...Madame E. Guerin, “French Poppy Lady” shortly after WWI ended, was concerned that the free world was “ forgetting to soon those who sleep in FlandersField”. She was the founder of the American and French Children’s League, and also foundher inspiration from Lieutenant-Colonel McCrae’s poem. She decided that the poppyshould be the memorial flower for all that had fallen in the Allied graveyards. The proceedsfrom the sales of poppies would go to American French orphans, many countries helped herin the cause, America, Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand. Meanwhile across theocean in America, Moina Michael was taking up the cause.WWI, New York City, 1918...Moina Michael: “Poppy Lady”, was a volunteer at theYMCA Overseas War Secretaries Headquarters. As the story goes; ayoung soldier left a current copy of the “Ladies Home Journal” at her desk. She came across the article ofColonel McCrae and his poem, Colonel McCrae had died from pneumonia on January 28, 1918. She becametransfixed on the last verse of the poem. At that moment she made a personal pledge to “Keep the Faith”, shevowed to wear a red poppy of Flanders Field in remembrance of all who had served in the war. Compelled bythis series of events Moina scribbled down her response to the passing of the torch. She titles her poem “WeShall Keep the Faith”. Moina continued to pursue selling silk poppies as a means of raising funds to assistdisabled veterans. In 1921 the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as the symbol of remembrancefor war veterans, but in 1922 decided to go with the daisy instead. The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) conducted it’s first nation wide poppy distribution before MemorialDay in 1922. In 1923 they decided that the poppies will be assembled by disabled and needy veterans, whowould be paid for their work that would help them with financial assistance. It was at that time that the poppiesbecame known as the “Buddy Poppy” and in 1924 the VFW registered the name with the U. S. PatentOffice. On May 20th, 1924, it was granted, the “Buddy Poppy” officially became the trademark for the VFW.PLEASE SEE POPPY ON PAGE 7Lieutenant Colonel JohnMcCrae, MD...Canadianpoet, physician, author, artist and soldier duringWWI.“In Flanders Fields”In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses row by rowThat mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved, and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands, we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If you break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.~Written: May 1915Moina Belle Michael...Professor at the Universityof Georgia. Author,Volunteer WWI.“We Shall Keep the Faith”Oh! You who sleep in Flanders fields,Sleep sweet-to rise anew!We caught the torch you threwAnd holding high, we keep the FaithWith All who died.We cherish, too, the poppy redThat grows on fields where valor led; That blood of heroes never dies,But lends a luster to the redOf the flower that blooms above the deadIn Flanders fields. And now the Torch and Poppy RedWe wear in honor of our dead.Fear not that ye have died for naught; We’ll Teach the lesson that ye wroughtIn Flanders fields.~Written: November 19185
