HWA CRAWFORD grew up in Seoul,Korea, among concrete buildings,asphalt streets, and very few trees.“When I came to Virginia I was amazedat the endless blanket of fields, trees,pastures, and rolling hills. Mikel Diaz 14A Spanish Pot #2MIKEL DIAZ is a local artist whosework can be categorized ascontemporary representationalencompassing still life, figurativeand sporting art themes. His artisticdedication since an early age ledhim to win second and first prizes,respectively, in juried art exhibits atthe Koubek <strong>Center</strong> of the Universityof Miami (1982), and at GaleriaCoqui in San Juan de Puerto Rico(1983). Mikel’s work has also beenexhibited in Caracas, Venezuela, NewYork, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta andToronto, Canada. Closer to home hiswork also has been part of exhibitsin local galleries in <strong>Middleburg</strong>,Virginia. TERESA DUKE was born in Washington,DC in 1962. The daughterof two physicians, she spent much ofher childhood developing her passionfor art while painting alongside hermother. In 1987, the artist moved toWarrenton, VA while pursuing her MFAdegree at George Washington Universityunder the tutelage of WilliamWoodward. While there, she receivedthe Robert N. Alfandre award fordrawing. Afterwards, she spent severalyears in scenic Rappahannock Countydeveloping a love of plein air painting.Ms. Duke spent two years living innorthern New Mexico interpretingthe brilliant light and saturated colorsof the high desert. She studied withWolf Kahn during this time at theSanta Fe Institute of Fine Arts. Ms.Duke had the privilege of workingwith noted portrait master DanielGreene during the summer of 2009.CURRENTLY the artist lives andworks in Fauquier County, andteaches art to young people atWakefield School in The Plains, VA. CHARLES MA<strong>THE</strong>SON developed hispainting skills as a practicing architect,delineating many designs usingwatercolor. He focuses on landscapepainting with many sketches in theoutdoors particularly following his lifelongpursuit of fox hunting and drivinghorses. His book, Hunting Sketches onthe Run, has been happily received inthe sporting community. He has beena visiting scholar for the University ofVirginia School of Architecture, VeniceProgram, teaching analytical drawingand watercolor studies. His paintingsare representative of his visual journeythrough the many venues of his sportand travels. Homeward BoundRodgers Naylor 18RODGERS NAYLOR was born in Washington,DC in 1954 and spent hischildhood on a farm near the PatuxentRiver in Maryland. He pursued paintingand drawing at the Minneapolis Collegeof Art and Design, The Atelier in Minneapolis,and the Art Students’ League ofDenver after attending the Universityof Chicago and Carleton College foracademics. Naylor currently lives andworks in the mountains of Colorado.RODGERS works in an alla primamanner, usually beginning witha warm-tone underpainting andcompleting a painting in one sessionwhen possible. Rodgers takes astrong interest in the effects of light/shadow and warm/cool colors, and isintrigued by the interplay between thelandscape and its human inhabitants.He paints both in the studio and enplein air. Rodgers has recently beenawarded the Best of Painting, Sun ValleyArt Festival, Ketchum, Idaho 2012,First Place, Gilpin County (Colorado)Art Association Juried Show 2010,and Best of Show, Spring Art Show,Evergreen, Colorado 2009. LILLA OHRSTROM lives in ThePlains, VA, where she is the ownerof Youngblood Art Studio. She hasbeen working in clay since childhood.Currently she teaches classes andexhibits other artists’ work at YAS.[youngbloodartstudio.wordpress.com]. She is creating a series ofsculptures of extreme skiers to becast in bronze and continues to makeemotive figurative ceramic sculptureas seen at the Sumner SchoolMuseum in her 2004 exhibit. Katherine Riedel 20PearsKA<strong>THE</strong>RINE RIEDEL is a Virginianative who grew up in Lynchburgand graduated from Mary WashingtonCollege. She now resides with her fourchildren and husband in Waterford. Inher early years studying drawing andpainting under Samuel K. Roller, Katherinedeveloped a joy in capturingthe outdoors in watercolors, oils andpastels. She has taken opportunitiesto paint in the upper Northwestcoast, islands off Massachusetts,England and many gardens andlandscapes in the Virginia countryside.IN addition to selling her work inMaryland and Virginia galleries,Katherine also displays, sells andteaches her art in her home studiothat once served as the town’s 19thcentury millinery and grocery store.Katherine has served as Artist-in-Residence at Waterford ElementarySchool where she shared her loveof art with students in a programemphasizing book illustration. Shehas hosted summer art camps, taughtin both public and private schools,and worked with students of all ages.


DANA LEE THOMPSON lives andpaints in the countryside nearCasanova, Virginia. She always had alove for animals, especially for dogs.She captures the essence and soulof each hound or animal she paints;whether it is a commission of someone’sbeloved pet or hounds lyingaround the kennel. Mainly a selftaughtartist, Dana has furthered hertechniques through art books, workshops,and perseverance. She hastaken several workshops with fineartist and illustrator John Leone. DANA VOLKERT’S paintings areinspired by the natural worldand its colors and complexity. Autumn FieldsAntonia Walker 24ANTONIA WALKER, a recent visitingartist to the American Academyin Rome, has become known for herpaintings of the Virginia countrysideas well as images of Italy and France.The artist received a BFA from theUniversity of Georgia where shestudied painting and printmakingand then attended graduate schoolat George Washington University.Later while living in South America,she studied drawing and anatomywith Spanish sculptor, Benjamin Saul.In 1998, Ms. Walker was invited tobe a visiting artist at the AmericanAcademy in Rome where she wasprovided a studio in which to work.In 1977, the artist painted in Francewhen she took a graduate paintingclass with William Woodward in Brittany.This past summer she went toProvence where she joined a groupof painters in a small hamlet nearRousillion from which they journeyedeach day to paint landscapes.<strong>THE</strong> <strong>ART</strong>IST’S WORK has beenrepresented in many collectionsincluding the Arts-in-Embassyprogram of the State Department,and in many corporate and privatecollections throughout the country.In 1989 Ms. Walker was invited toparticipate in a NASA panel of visualartists and poets gathered to createworks celebrating the space program.Further works can be seen at Gallery222 in Leesburg , the HandwrightGallery in New Canaan, CT, and theLongview Gallery in Sperryville, VA.


ROXANNE WEIDELE, originallyfrom New York City, now livesin Galesville, Maryland. In 1964, shereceived an Associates Degree in FineArts from the Silvermine College ofArt in Connecticut and a BA (1968) inArt Education from Hofstra Universityin New York. Her formal educationcontinued with Masters courses at theMaryland Institute College of Art inBaltimore, Maryland. Before retirementin June 1999, she was an art educatorfor 31 years at Southern Senior HighSchool in Anne Arundel County,MD. During those years she helpedestablish and continues to be a partowner of River Gallery in Galesville. Sheis also a member of the Muddy CreekArtist Guild. Her work has been exhibitedat Susan Calloway Fine Arts inGeorgetown, Washington, DC, BishopStock Gallery in Snow Hill, MD, RiverGallery in Galesville, MD and BenfieldGallery in Severna Park, MD.
