It is particularlyencouraging that we are entering into partnerships with communitycolleges and professional schools, developing new academic programsincluding nursing, an MBA program, a chemistry major, a baccalaureateprogram in criminal justice and making significant technological advancesthroughout the <strong>College</strong>.There are also discussions about capital projects to support existingand developing programs that have the potential to make a significantstatement about the <strong>College</strong> and serve as a symbol to the internaland external community, to students, alumni, friends and donors that<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is forging a path.These initiatives support Vision 20/20 and the Strategic Plan. The<strong>College</strong> continues to fulfill its mission of providing a liberal artsDr. Nancy B. <strong>Tusculum</strong> TechnologyProfessor uses social network to extend student discussionProfessor Wayne Thomas expects his students’ bestefforts. His reputation precedes him as an advocate foropen-mindedness in learning, as well as his willingnessto test the boundaries of conventional teaching. In thisspirit, he incorporated the use of the social networkingsite, facebook, into the syllabus for hisIntermediate Creative Writing courseduring the 2010-11 academic year.Thomas, chair of the Fine Arts Departmentand associate professor of English,created a group webpage for the class. As acore requirement for success in the course,he instructed the students to use the facebookpage as a forum to extend in-class discussionsbeyond the walls of the classroom.Moreover, students were assigned respectiveauthors and poets to acquaint themselveswith and then asked to present these writersin the forum professionally and authoritatively,posting external links to biographies,recorded readings, etc. On any given dayof the class, one student posted informationabout a writer and a sample of his or herwork, and the other students posted comments in reply, oftenregarding themes they noticed in the writer’s work.Thomas also imparted a certain freedom to his students,allowing them to discuss authors and literature outsideof those outlined in the course schedule. Simple consensus was discouraged.The students enjoyed the ability to click“Like” on posts they agreed with or wereenlightened by, while being able to disagreewith others’ poetic interpretations withoutthe threat of offending a classmate or friendin a face-to-face setting.Thomas graded students on the frequencyand creativity of their posts as well as theirabilities to “bring something new” to theonline discussions. After the allotted timefor posting comments had expired, Thomasread the forum threads and “Liked” theposts that met or excelled beyond the assignmentrequirements. Besides signifying ajob well done and acting as immediate gratificationfor students, Thomas’ “Likes” wereincorporated into the final participation grades for the class.Perhaps the most ingenious aspect of Thomas’ courseformatting in this instance was simply giving students anincentive to use their favorite social networking site productively.Their discussions cycled in and out of class andled to engaged, attentive work in their final portfolios.By Justin Reed,senior creative writing major from Florence, S.C.


Technology is a key component in theeducational process for the typical adult studentenrolled in <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Graduate andProfessional Studies (GPS) program.Because of the diversity of its students,instructors and staff encounter entering studentswith a widely varied range of technologyexperience and aptitude.And, because of the critical importance oftechnology-as-a-tool in the workplace, theGPS program strives to encourage explorationand growth in technology skills as part of theacademic program.The Knoxville Regional Center is pilotinga student services program modeled after thevery successful residential program, which hasoperated on the Greeneville campus for manyyears.GPS Student Services program offersa traditional book loan program, and inaddition loans out technology, such as laptops,Android tablets and iPads. The GPS StudentServices program serves students not onlyat the Knoxville Regional Center, but alsostudents attending classes at the Greeneville campus andMorristown and Tri-Cities sites.According to Ryan Otto, director of Student Servicesfor GPS, a grant provided the funding for GPS StudentServices to purchase these new devices.The grant’s purpose is to support first-generation collegestudents in learning to utilize new technology. Students onthe Knoxville campus are given the opportunity to borrowthese items, and staff is available to teach them about socialmedia and how it can be utilized. For example, the staff ofGPS Student Services provides students with instructionson how to Skype, as well as on the “ins and outs” offacebook and updating webpages.As at all of <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s sites and on campus, usefultechnology is provided in the classroom. The Knoxvillecampus has a computer lab open 8:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.Monday through Saturday, and the library supplies alarge number of e-books on various subjects. There areinteractive whiteboards available and Internet access inevery classroom.As part of the program, GPS Student Services providesonline tutorials for the online course management5<strong>Tusculum</strong> TechnologyGPS Student Support Services provides toolsto assist adult students in becoming tech savvyKim Bloomfield, student service coordinator at the Knoxville campus,tutors a student on the use of a tablet.programs, which <strong>Tusculum</strong> professors utilize as part oftheir instructional format.Through those programs, syllabi and grades can beposted and in some cases, students can communicate witheach other and their instructors and assignments can beposted.“GPS Student Services works to try and figure out thebest technology to help our students,” said Otto. “With theaid of the grant we are exceptionally able to engage ourstudents with technology and provide them skills in theutilization of these critical workplace tools.”In addition the students stay connected with teachersand other students through e-mail. The feeling of beingconnected leads to feelings of being supported.Even at the adult level, said Otto, GPS Student Servicesis a very valuable program and offers much neededhelp like counseling, workshops and educational trips.“By helping students be technologically savvy, our staffhas found another way to make sure that students arecomfortable with whatever they are presented.”By Antionette Young,senior journalism major from Nashville, Tenn.


<strong>Tusculum</strong> Technology<strong>College</strong> embarks on ambitioustechnology improvement programIn July 2011, <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>embarked on an ambitious technologyprogram that will support the goals of the<strong>College</strong> for years to come. There are manyissues that will be addressed administrativelyand technologically.In order for <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> to prepare itsgraduates for entry into a global society, informationtechnology must be explored and utilized. To thisend, it becomes vital that the <strong>College</strong> have a stronginfrastructure. At the completion of this plan <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong>’s Information Systems (TCIS) will be operatingin a proactive manner, allowing for new technologies toreplace old oneswithout interruptionto functionalityor operability.Specifically, overthe next three years,changes will bemade in the way thatTCIS functions bothadministratively andoperationally.Step one in thisongoing processis that the entireinfrastructurebackbone is beingcompletely upgradedand standardized.Through virtualizationtechnology, TCISis consolidating20 physical servermachines into twophysical boxes withbuilt-in redundancy and failover capabilities. Enterpriselevel firewalls have been installed to provide a high levelof security for <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s network and its data integrity.Another part of this network redesign will be the abilityto offer Internet 2 access. More information concerningInternet 2 access can be found athttp://www.internet2.edu/. Increased bandwidth and a fiberbackbone will afford <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> the ability to push6services and technology to its off-campus sites withoutbottlenecks and slowdowns.The ultimate goal is to standardize technology in everyclassroom utilized by faculty, thereby providing themaccess to current educational technology trends to ensurethe best experience possible for faculty and students.This technology will consist of utilizing large screenLED HDTVs mounted on classroom walls and wirelesssync devices to allow faculty to project what is on theircomputer on the television. The difference between thisand a stationary solution is that the faculty member willbe able to move around the classroom with their portablewireless device. This technology is cross platform allowingfor the usage of a Windows PC, MAC or even other mobiletechnology such asan iPad or tablet.This will also allowstudents to sync theirwireless devices tothe television forproject presentations;all of this withoutcumbersome cables.This technology isin the initial testingphase and should beinstalled in the firstclassroom this year.Campus widewireless access willalso be coming to<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>with the initialimplementationplanned for summer2012 in studentresidence halls. Acomplete managed wireless access solution will affordfaculty, staff, students and campus visitors a fast, reliableexperience in accessing network resources and data.Video streaming of <strong>Tusculum</strong> events has been introduced,and faculty and Town Hall meetings have been streamedlive via the Internet so that off-campus faculty and staffcould participate virtually. Streaming of <strong>Tusculum</strong> athleticsis also in the works as testing began in November 2011.Large screen LED HDTVs linked to a stationery computer are used by<strong>Tusculum</strong> faculty now, such as this classroom in which Dr. RonMcCallister, associate professor of computer science and director of theSchool of Arts and Sciences, teaches a computer class. The technologyplan calls for the implementation of technology that will allow facultyto move around the classroom with a portable wireless device while itsscreen is projected to the large screen television.


Video streaming of <strong>Tusculum</strong> graduation ceremonies isplanned for 2012 as well.In September 2011, the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Board of Trusteesallocated more than one million dollars for the replacementof the current information management system. Thisfunding was used to research a replacement for the currentsystem and to implement a new data management systemthat can support the <strong>College</strong>’s growth for the foreseeablefuture. The current system, while serving <strong>Tusculum</strong>admirably for the past 17 years, has been outgrown bythe increased enrollment of students and advances intechnology. It has now become an obstacle for the growthof the <strong>College</strong>. Initial assessments began in late summer2011 with a vendor site visit to establish what wasneeded and how to best transition from the old system.Implementation of the new system began in January, withfull implementation to take approximately 18 months.These are only a few of the innovative technology-relatedissues being addressed by the <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>Information Systems Department. Thin Clienttechnology allows for desktop virtualization by having a serverpush desktop images out to terminals in the labs. This allowsfor centralized management of software and hardware, as all ofthe work is done on the server. In layman’s terms, Thin Clienttechnology means that TCIS can make one change or update onthe server then push that change out to all terminals in the lab.Desktop Video Conferencing was officially introduced to the<strong>Tusculum</strong> community in November. This new technology allowsfor high definition, interactive video conferencing to be conductedwith only a laptop, webcam and microphone. <strong>Tusculum</strong> TechnologyWhen Chris Jacek, assistant professorof digital media at <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>, joined the facultytwo years ago, he arrived inspired by <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’scommitment to hands-on education and the prospect of theextended class time offered by the block schedule. Havingworked at Apple and Time Warner Creative, Jacek knew hisstudents needed not only to learn technical skills, but theyalso needed to gain experience with a wide variety of softwareand design and editing tools that would increase theirvalue in the job market and in the freelance world.His biggest concern as he began preparing for classeswas lost time and technical experience created by limitedlab space and the sharing of rapidly aging computers,software and editing equipment.“With limited lab equipment, hands-on activities hadto be done independently, outside of class, without thebenefit of the instructor present,” Jacek said, adding thatstudents would learn about the software and programsthrough lecture, then would come back later for their timeon the equipment. “We couldn’t work through things as agroup, and it was impossible to let them explore the programsas we went over it in class.” What was needed wasa 15-unit lab with technology and equipment that couldcontinually be updated. A daunting and expensive undertaking,but one Jacek felt was critical to the future successof the program and of his students.Jacek was determined to find a solution that would improvethe learning experience for his students, as well asincrease the range of applications and software they couldgain experience with prior to graduation. He met with administrators,pored over budgets and consulted other institutionsto see how such issues were being addressed. Asthe issue was discussed and processed, a creative solutionthat keeps cutting edge technology and software in theclassroom and provides students with tools that they cankeep and utilize after graduation began to emerge.“After some creative problem solving, we came up witha solution that not only provided the program with whatit needed, but at the end of the day, was actually a bettersolution than a lab,” Jacek said. Jacek worked with the administrationand with the Office of Financial Aid to developa loan program for students to purchase their own laptopcomputers and software and assimilate it as part of theirfinancial aid package. The students own the computers, andbecause of the combined purchasing power and discount8rates the <strong>College</strong> receives,they are ableto gain the tools oftheir future trade at amuch reduced pricethan that of the averageconsumer.“Now we canhave lab experience.All the students canwork on the sameprogram at the sametime,” Jacek said.“They are able toStudents in a digital media coursepresent projects from their laptopcomputers.practice techniquesand receive classroom feedback from the instructor, providingthe learning environment that <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> excels at –intense, hands-on experiences.”Because the computers are mobile, the students can utilizethem for homework, personal projects and on-site editingduring film shoots. They also use their computers forclass project presentations, hooking to a main screen in theclassroom.“The students have been very enthusiastic about the newprogram,” Jacek said. “They are very respectful of theirown equipment and appreciate that the software is currentand relevant to the workplace today.”According to Jacek, it is the nature of digital media thateverything builds on what you have learned previously,much like mathematics. “We now have more learning bydoing, can cover more programs and techniques, and thestudents leave us more marketable in the work world. Theyalso have equipment to develop their own projects independentlyor to be included in their portfolios.Plans are to eventually expand the program to include a digitalSLR, high definition camera for each of the students. Jaceksaid he would like students to leave the Digital Media programwith everything they need to produce on their own.“It’s a win-win for us. It makes sense for the institution,as the <strong>College</strong> no longer pays for obsolescence, and for thestudents, they are investing in themselves and their futurecareers,” he said.By Suzanne Richey,director of college communications


Two <strong>Tusculum</strong> courses made the world their classroomthis past year, visiting both London and Salzburg as part of<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Global Studies initiative. In addition,during the year, <strong>Tusculum</strong> students were able to havediscussions with students from across the globe aboutcurrent international business issues such as the role ofenergy in the global environment and English as a globallanguage through a new program of the <strong>College</strong>’s Centerfor Global Studies.Students in the “3-D Art in Europe” special topics courseaccompanied instructor Keith Herrin, assistant professorof art, on a trip to Europe, which had stops in Munich,Germany; Innsbruck, Linz and Salzburg, Austria, andZurich, Switzerland. Also traveling with the students wasDr. David McMahan, dean of students.Part of the focus of thetrip was not only to see theartwork and architecture,but also to allow thestudents to learn how totravel and feel comfortablein traveling.Clare McBeth, a juniorfrom Martin majoringin museum studies, wasstruck by the size of thecathedral in Salzburg.While looking at a set ofsculpted, metal gates insidethe cathedral, she was encouraged by Herrin to touch them.“I thought about the person who did this and how manypeople have gone through it,” she said. “The trip started tomean more to me then. I was seeing incredible things that Ihad only seen in books.”Literature came alive to a group of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>students as they traveled to London and were able to seesettings of some of the most important works of 19thcentury British authors.Students in the “19th Century British Literature” coursetraveled to London Oct. 27- Nov. 2 accompanied by theirprofessor for the course, Dr. Shelia Morton, assistantprofessor of English.The students enjoyed exploring ancient buildings in thecity of Salisbury, the home of author William Golding, andall enjoyed the trip to Bath, the setting for much of JaneAustin’s novel, “Persuasion.”Exploring some of the places authors frequented and placesused as settings in their books was the main focus of the trip.9<strong>Tusculum</strong> Technology<strong>Tusculum</strong> students connect with the worldA trip to Costa Rica and an interdisciplinary trip toMalta were also taken during the spring semester. A trip toBarcelona, Spain, is planned this summer.On the <strong>Tusculum</strong> campus, Global Studies usedtechnology to connect with the world. More than20 students at <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> and 17 in Norwayparticipated in a global classroom discussion in December.The topic of the program was “English as a GlobalLanguage.” Students represented not only the UnitedStates, but also Chile, Norway, Russia, Denmark, Bulgaria,Nigeria, China, France and Ghana.Students connected via one of two sites, either onthe <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus or the campus of HiHUniversity in Harstad, Norway.The interactive debate centered around whether Englishwas becoming a globallanguage, whether itwas the right languagefor a global languageand alternatives suchas Chinese or Spanish.Discussions also focusedon the lack of bilingualismof American students,while most internationalstudents were fluentin a minimum of twolanguages. The studentsalso discussed thecultural aspects of language and the difficulty of conveyingcultural connotations in a second language.The global classroom was sponsored by the <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> Business Club and the Study Abroad and GlobalAwareness student organization at <strong>Tusculum</strong>. It wascoordinated by Dr. Geir Bergvin, director of the Centerfor Global Studies and associate professor of marketing,and Heather Patterson, assistant professor of English. It isone of a series designed to connect <strong>Tusculum</strong> students andfaculty in academic discussions with students and facultythroughout the world.“The new program is based on the technology that<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> has invested in that allows us to linkup to classrooms across the globe for one coordinatedclassroom discussion,” said Bergvin.Anyone interested in more information on the programor who wold like to find out about the Center for GlobalStudies should contact Bergvin at 423-636-7300 or atgbergvin@tusculum.edu.Participating in an international interactive debate about Englishas a global language were members of a linguistics course andmembers of the <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> Business Club.


<strong>Tusculum</strong> TechnologyCameras help studentsdiscover artistic ‘eye’Deborah Bryan, assistant professorof art, is using technology to helpher students develop their ownartistic eye.When Bryan came to <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> in 2007, she was struck byhow many students in her drawing,painting and printmaking classeshad difficulties in generating originalimagery to use as a basis for theirartwork.Students were going to websiteswith copyright-free imagery to findphotos to use. “I asked, ‘wouldyou want to use someone else’sphotography for instance, as thebasis of your work? Why notgenerate your own photographs andwork with those as references?’”Realizing it would not be enoughto restrict students from using theseimages, Bryan set upon a course ofaction that continues. She bringsin quality point and shoot digitalcameras and teaches her students howto take the shots they need and to usePhotoshop Elements and PhotoshopCS5 to develop the images into areference photo. Among the newest are stage lightsthat use LED bulbs. The dimmersof red, blue and green are builtinto the lights, he said, and canbe operated through the controlsfor the stage lights, making iteasier to create different colors. Toaccomplish the same effect withthe older lights would require threelights, three color gels and threedimmers operated separately.In the Behan Theatre, a newcontrol booth was constructed lastsummer and a new lighting controlsystem installed. Its control boardis now interchangeable with the onethat controls the auditorium’s stage,Mengel said, so they can be easilyinterchanged if a problem arises.The light switch/dimmer box in theBehan Theatre hasbeen upgraded. <strong>Tusculum</strong> Technology<strong>Tusculum</strong> alumnae teachusing high tech toolsAs a lesson progresses on the measurement of volumein Candace Babb’s fifth grade class at <strong>Tusculum</strong> ViewElementary, students pick up their voting clickers andanswer a question shown on the screen ofthe classroom interactive whiteboard. Witha touch of the screen, Babb, a 2010graduate of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s educationprogram, notes that 15 out of 16 students inthe class got the correct answer and moveson with the lesson.The interactive whiteboard, the votingclickers, laptops, iPads, document-readersand the Internet are among the technologicalelements that are integrated into Babb’sclassroom, as well as that of CarlaRenner ’05, who teaches fifth gradelanguage arts at <strong>Tusculum</strong> View. Duringa lesson that same day in Renner’s class,students pulled out laptops andcontinued work on their non-fictionbooks they are completing as acreative writing assignment.“Technology in the classroom iscrucial,” said Renner. “The studentshave become self-sufficient. Theyknow what is expected, and theylearn to figure things out. While the majority of the studentswork independently, I have the opportunity to pull studentsand work with them one-on-one.”Renner added that self-sufficiency is a skill that theystrive for, as it allows class time to focus on criticalskill-building and much more material is able to be coveredin the limited time allotted for each subject. Renner utilizesthe laptops on a daily basis, as well as the classroom’ssmart board. Technology is a set of tools that are writteninto the lesson plan, and students expect it to be part ofthe learning process in the same manner as a textbook or acalculator.“I can’t imagine teaching without technology,” saidRenner. Technology is integrated, starting with the planningprocess, through classroom instruction and the waystudents are assessed. Being able to implement the varioustools is now a non-negotiable skill for classroom teachers.Both Babb and Renner agree that technology helps thembe more creative in the classroom, allowing for more variedactivities and activities that are engaging to the tech-savvystudents. We can diagnoseproblems, answer questions and assess competency.Because of this, we are more effective.”Next year will be the first year that the students will taketheir T-CAPs (the end of year standardized exam) online,according to Babb. Major donor finds <strong>Tusculum</strong>to be the ‘right place’ as a studentRyan Barker, a sophomore history andcreative writing major from Laurens,S.C., has found <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> tobe not only the perfect setting for hisacademic success and personal growth,but also a home away from home wherehe is engaged, supported and envelopedin the culture.“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is more thanthe name of my school,” said Ryan. Ryan Barker“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is my professors, thestaff, the <strong>College</strong> Communications office and InstitutionalAdvancement office where I work, the friendships I havemade with other students and those that serve with me onthe Student Government Association (SGA) and in otheractivities. It is also the many alumni, Board Members andother friends of the <strong>College</strong> whom I have gotten to knowand share my experience with over the past two years.”Ryan has excelled academically despite a challengingdouble major path and has been engaged in studentlife, including serving on SGA as Welty-Craig Hallrepresentative and participating in other organizationsand service projects. He has worked with new students oncampus tours and helped with registration.As Ryan has become an integrated part of <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> and the unique culture of its diverse mix ofstudents, emphasis on academics, and the Civic Arts, he hasworked side by side with the staff and faculty promotingthe <strong>College</strong> and its achievements through his work with theDevelopment and Alumni Relations departments as well.Among the other titles he has accumulated as a studentand through his work, Ryan is also a major donor to the<strong>College</strong>. This past year, Ryan gave a $1,001 gift to the<strong>College</strong>, putting him in a unique category of those whogo above and beyond to help <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> serve itsstudents and provide those programs that make <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> the special experience that bonds those who arenow her alumni.Why would a student struggling to put himself throughcollege part with what is such a significant part of hisannual income to make a gift to <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>?“It is something I wanted to do,” said Ryan, whose giftrepresented one third of his summer income. “There is notone single reason, but many that made me want to givethis gift.”Ryan said that <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a very special placefor him, that he has been encouraged and supported by13faculty and staff who have become mentors and somelike family. He has also learned a tremendous amountabout how the <strong>College</strong> operates and the importance ofphilanthropic giving to not only <strong>College</strong> programs, but alsofor student scholarships.“Why would I not give what I can?” said Ryan,“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> has meant so much to so many, andI love talking to alumni and hearing their stories. He has participated through his work studyposition and through his student internship in the planningand execution of development and alumni programs. Ryanhas also given many, many volunteer hours.“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is the right place for me,” said Ryan.“I have found a lot of support and encouragement here andit has helped me to be successful. But, we still have needs.There are ways we could be better, and I want to be a partof that, I want to make <strong>Tusculum</strong> better.”When asked what he would like to see in <strong>Tusculum</strong>’sfuture, Ryan said he hoped the focus would stay on thestudents and that more resources would be provided forexisting academic programs and student programs like thePioneer Band.“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a great place and we do so manythings well because of the people here, but we can do somuch more, offer so many of the good things on a widerscale, enhance the programs we have, if we just had theresources.Ryan hopes to continue to be an active student at<strong>Tusculum</strong>, even as his academic program becomes morechallenging. The Arts at <strong>Tusculum</strong>The Department of Fine Arts was created at the beginning of thefall 2012 term to further strengthen the standing of the arts, whichhave brought scores of people to campus and provided creativeoutlets for not only students, but community members as well. Itincludes the majors of Art and Design, Digital Media, English witha concentration in creative writing, as well as a minor in theater andmusic courses. <strong>College</strong> moves forward with new academic programsThe Board of Trustees of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> hasconceptually approved three new academic programs,including a master’s degree program in businessadministration and undergraduate programs in nursing andcriminal justice.The new programs were recommended to the Board ofTrustees after the completion of faculty-led comprehensivefeasibility studies. The programs were deemed to alignwell with the civic arts/community service portion of<strong>Tusculum</strong>’s mission and core values and to have strongpotential for the recruitment of new students to the <strong>College</strong>in the social/behavioral and natural sciences.The proposed degree programs are contingent uponthe approval of the Southern Association of <strong>College</strong>s andSchools Commission on <strong>College</strong>s and upon approval of theTennessee Board of Nursing for nursing.The Master of Business Administration will bea transition from the existing Master of Arts inOrganizational Management. Based on the feasibilitystudy, projected employment for students with the MBAcredential is positive, and <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s graduate businessfaculty members are well poised with experience,resources and organizational capacity to transition theMAOM into a MBA.The feasibility study for the nursing program showeda number of local and national factors support the valueof the <strong>College</strong> providing undergraduate students theopportunity to complete an undergraduate nursing degreeeither as first-time freshmen or as registered nursesseeking to complete a bachelor’s degree. Prospectivestudent data collected via <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s Office of EnrollmentManagement documents that the number of studentsconsidering the <strong>College</strong> who are also seeking nursing havetripled since 2009.In preparation for beginning the nursing program thisfall, Dr. Lois L. Ewen has been named the <strong>College</strong>’s deanof nursing.“This is a major step forward for <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> andthe nursing program, and we are thrilled that we are ableto engage Dr. Ewen as our Dean of Nursing at <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong>, as she brings all the skills, talent and heart thatwill be necessary to build a program that will impact somany lives for many years to come,” said Dr. Nancy B.Moody, president of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>.Dr. Ewen comes to <strong>Tusculum</strong> from Capital RegionalMedical Center in Tallahassee, Fla., where she servedas director of education. She has more than 12 yearsof academic dean’s experience at her three previousinstitutions and has extensive experience working withfaculty and students.The criminal justice undergraduate program will be an15addition to the School of Arts and Sciences. This majorprovides students the opportunity to enter a variety ofgovernment, security and justice-related occupations.The feasibility study revealed that prospective studentinterest in the major has been steady over the last few years,and state employment trends indicate sustained employmentopportunity for those seeking work in policing, correctionsand other security/justice-related positions.“A great deal of thought and effort has been putinto creating these new programs by our faculty andadministration,” said Moody. “We are committed toincreasing academic options for students, while continuingto support the programs already in place.”Local hospitals sign agreementsto support nursing programLaughlin and Takoma hospitals signed clinicalaffiliation agreements on January 19 to serve aseducational sites for the new nursing program.“<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> is dedicated to meeting this needin our area, and we are proud to move forward on thiseffort with community partners such as Laughlin andTakoma hospitals, which are critical to our success,”said Dr. Nancy B. Small business program recognized as model for global action initiative<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s “Help Me Help You” program hasbeen selected as one of the top programs in the nationby the Clinton Global Initiative University, a nationalfoundation that recognizes innovative programs andprojects that have a large impact with global reach.The program and its co-founder, Luis Zamora, a juniorbusiness and economics major from Santiago, Chile, wererecognized in March at the Foundation’s global conferencein Washington D.C.“This is a wonderful achievement and recognitionfor Luis, his program and for <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>,” saidPresident Nancy B. Moody. “He is the epitome of what<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>represents andhopes to instill in itsstudents. The program isalready available in both Spanish and English.According to Zamora, this involves not only sharingthe course content and additional documents, butalso supporting and guiding the academic institutionon an ongoing basis in order to ensure an adequateimplementation, as well as providing access to theprogram’s Global University Platform to further enhancethe current efforts of all institutions involved worldwide.Zamora created the program along with Gimenez,in partnership with the University of Chile, located inSantiago.The program,operated by<strong>Tusculum</strong>’s businessstudents and studentsin the BonnerLeader Program, iscommitted to helpingits participantsincrease their profits,create a businessplan, expand theirnetwork and improvetheir practical andinterpersonal skillsthrough a varietyof unique, globallytested activities.The programstarted in the fallwith nine participantsand eight monitorscompleting a 10-week course thataims to create amutual learning environment between students and smallbusiness owners. The spring semester program has 12participants and began in January. The overwhelmingsupport the program has received in Greeneville, in additionto its innovative concept of providing benefits for all of thedifferent individuals involved, has carried through into thenegotiations of implementing the program overseas.The first year has been funded by sponsors ScottNiswonger, Tom Ferguson and Atmos Energy Corp.Following the idea of helping underdeveloped regions,Help Me Help You has gone from the Appalachian regionto Concepción, Chile, which was one of the zones that wasmost affected by the 8.8 earthquake that hit the country inFebruary 2010.17


Domer and Gamble join Board of TrusteesTwo new members have joined the <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>Board of Trustees, Dr. Judith Kofroth Domer ’61 andAnna B. Gamble.Gamble was approved as a Board member at the May2011 board meeting and attended her first meeting inSeptember. At that September meeting, Dr. Domer wasapproved as the newest trustee.Dr. DomerDr. Domer is no stranger toservice to her Alma Mater. Shehas served on the <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> Alumni Executive Boardfor several years, includingserving as the Board presidentfrom 2005-2007.Throughout her career Dr.Domer performed a great deal ofresearch, but she also mentoredpostdoctoral fellows and graduatestudents who did research in herDr. Judith Domerlaboratory and taught both medical and graduate studentsin the areas of medical mycology and immunology.She received appointments to various study sectionsat the National Institute of Health at the VeteransAdministration and as a reviewer for Howard HughesPredoctoral Fellowships.Dr. Domer has been the president of the MedicalMycological Society of the Americas, has served onthe editorial boards of several journals, most notably“Infection and Immunity” and “Clinical MicrobiologyReviews,” and served as the chair of the AnnualMeeting Program Committee for the American Societyfor Microbiology.She was awarded a doctorate from Tulane Universitywhere she worked, eventually receiving the title ofacting vice chancellor for Graduate Studies at theirmedical center.“We are very pleased that Judy has accepted ourinvitation to join the Board of Trustees,” said Chairof the Board Kenneth A. Academics4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> received reaffirmation of accreditation by theSouthern Association of <strong>College</strong>s and Schools Commission on <strong>College</strong>s forthe next 10 years. The announcement was made at the SACSCOC annualmeeting on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in Louisville, Ky. The <strong>College</strong> hasbeen an accredited institution through the SACSCOC since 1926, and therecent review was the best in the history of the <strong>College</strong>. Reaffirmation is theresult of the hard work of faculty and staff and speaks highly of the strengthof the <strong>College</strong> in academic programs and support units.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> introduced two new degree programs, the Bachelorof Science in Business Administration and the Master of Arts in Teaching.Both programs are offered through the <strong>College</strong>’s Graduate and ProfessionalStudies program and are now offered at the Greeneville campus, the KnoxvilleRegional Center and the sites in Gray and Morristown. A new concentration inbehavioral health was also added in the psychology program.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> is expanding the way it serves both students and the community. The <strong>College</strong> began the process tooffer on-site instruction in Madison County, N.C., for the master’s degree programs in education.4Graduates from <strong>Tusculum</strong> will have additional opportunities to enter professional programs following thesigning of affiliation agreements late in 2010 with the Gatton <strong>College</strong> of Pharmacy at East Tennessee StateUniversity. The <strong>College</strong> also signed affiliation agreements with the Southern <strong>College</strong> of Optometry and theLincoln Memorial University-DeBusk <strong>College</strong> of Osteopathic Medicine. The <strong>College</strong> also signed an articulationagreement with Pellissippi State Community <strong>College</strong> in June, which provides Pellissippi graduates with anassociate’s degree a seamless admission process to <strong>Tusculum</strong>.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> moved forward with implementation of Problem-Solving with Reflective Judgment, aQuality Enhancement Plan, begun as part of the SACSCOC reaffirmation process. The new initiative is consistentwith the <strong>College</strong>’s mission to cultivate the habits of practical wisdom and develop the skill of reflective thinking.As part of the initial implementation, faculty development opportunities were held to equip professors in targetedcourses to teach using problem-based learning, case-study method and reasoning through moral and ethicaldilemmas. This enriched instructional philosophy is intended to help students apply reflective judgment to illstructuredproblems which are designed into the coursework. In addition, Residence Advisors were trained tooffer student programming which involved students confronting real-world problems and learning to constructdefensible arguments for the solutions they selected.4Six new faculty were hired in the 2010-11 academic year, including Suzanne Byrd, assistant professor ofphysical education; David Frazier, assistant professor of computer science; Eva Lynn Cowell, assistant professorof management; Chris Jacek, assistant professor of digital media; Jason Jones, assistant professor of physicaleducations, and Clay Matthews, assistant professor of English.4The Corporation for National and Community Service has honored <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> with a place on thePresident’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service toAmerica’s communities for the fifth time. This comes as a great honor to the <strong>College</strong> because service projects andservice learning experiences are part of the core of <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s mission that includes the Civic Arts and serviceto others. The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for itscommitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Enrollment Management4Enrollment in the Residential<strong>College</strong> continues to grow. Therewere 930 students enrolled inacademic programs, including 354new freshmen and transfer students.In total, with the addition ofGraduate and Professional Studiesstudents, enrollment was at 2,249.4Dr. Thomas H. Stein wasnamed vice president forenrollment management at<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> and assumedhis responsibilities in April.Stein held a similar position for18 years at Otterbein Universityin Westerville, Ohio. Withthirty-two years experiencein higher education, Stein hasexperience in marketing, fundraising, strategic planningand working with students through the enrollment andfinancial aid processes.4The Yellow Ribbon program, which assistsmilitary veterans, helped the <strong>College</strong> gain aspot on G.I. Jobs’ 2011 list of Military FriendlySchools. Institutional Advancement4Heather Patchett was named vice president of Institutional Advancement June 2011.Patchett has more than 20 years experience in all aspects of fund raising, including majorgifts, capital campaigns and planned giving programs. She managed advancement programsat Converse <strong>College</strong>, where she served as vice president of Institutional Advancement; atthe University of the South, where she served as director of capital gifts, and at GustavusAdolphus <strong>College</strong>, where she was director of the Office of Gift Planning.4More than $1.75 million was raised during fiscal year 2010-11 from 1,276 donors. Of that amount, $611,944was designated to the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Fund to support <strong>College</strong> operations, exceeding the 2010-11 <strong>Tusculum</strong> Fund goalof $400,000.4The <strong>College</strong> received bequests in excess of $757,000 which helped to establish endowments for the literarymagazine, the theater program and scholarships.4Once again, 100 percent of the members of the Board of Trustees made gifts to the <strong>College</strong>. They contributedmore than one-third of the dollars given to the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Fund, giving 255 percent of their goal to the Fund.4The 2010-11 Faculty-Staff Campaign saw a two percent increase over 2009-10, with 46 percent of faculty andstaff contributing to the campaign.The <strong>College</strong> lost a dedicated friend withthe death of Dr. Samuel E. Miller ‘35H’98 of Abingdon, Va. Dr. Miller passedaway June 3, 2010. He was a long-timesupporter of his Alma Mater, particularlythe Arts Outreach program, and waspresented the Distinguished ServiceAward by the <strong>College</strong> in 2009. Dr.Miller was a physician, poet, educator,patron of the arts, visionary and servantleader. His associations with <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> include the lifelong ties made among the sixmembers of his immediate family who attended <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong>. Dr. Miller established a pattern of positiveinvolvement in college, community and family that hecarried on since his student days at <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Hissupport of the arts included his initiation of Arts Outreach’sActs, Arts, Academia annual performance and lecture series,and attendance at Theatre-at-<strong>Tusculum</strong> performances as hishealth allowed. Upon his death, Miller, a member of theHeritage Club, bequeathed the <strong>College</strong> more than $80,000.4Gifts to the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Fund fromfoundations totaled more than $157,000;nearly four times the total given in theprevious year.4A challenge was issued on June 1 toincrease alumni giving from five percent to10 percent by June 30. The giving percentagefrom the Residential <strong>College</strong> alumni finishedat 10.86 percent, nearly three percent higherthan the previous year, and participationfrom Graduate and Professional Studiesprogram alumni nearly doubled, going from1.12 to 2.19 percent. Overall there were 370more gifts to the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Fund. Of thosegifts, 283 were from first-time donors, newmembers of the <strong>College</strong>’s Founder’s Society.Continued on the next page


4The senior class of 2011 exceeded their Senior Class Gift Campaign fund raising goal and provided new signs atthe entrances to campus. The Class of 2011 also had more donors than any other alumni class.4Many events were celebrated, including:• Dr. Nancy B. Moody was inaugurated as the <strong>College</strong>’s 27th president, becoming the <strong>College</strong>’s first-everfemale president;• alumni enjoyed an event at the historic <strong>Tusculum</strong> House in Princeton, New Jersey;• more than 500 alumni and friends participated in Homecoming 2010 activities, and• the <strong>College</strong> hosted the Ambassador of Malta Mark Miceli, who opened an international photographyexhibit from Malta and met with students and community members.4The <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> Pioneer Pep Band made its debut in the Fall of 2010 and by spring, was joined by thecreation of a full band program; the hiring of David A. Price, director of music and special events, and the additionof a jazz band, a concert band and a handbell choir.Information Systems4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> partnered with the Greeneville City School System as an external evaluator to assessresources and departmental effectiveness in the summer of 2010. In addition, a Technology Task Force wasappointed to look at existing needs, to work on prioritization and to assess funding routes for investing in acampus wide technology plan spanning the next five years to be linked with the <strong>College</strong>’s overall Strategic Plan.These two exercises led to plans for hiring a new Vice President and Chief Technology Officer to lead the campusin its technology programming.4 Dr. Blair Ferrell Henley was named vice president for information systems andchief technology officer at <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> in late June. He brings to <strong>Tusculum</strong>nearly 14 years of computer and systems experience as career and technical educationsupervisor at the Bristol Tennessee City School System. He serves as the director oftechnology for the Niswonger Foundation’s Northeast Tennessee <strong>College</strong> and CareerReady Consortium (NETCO) Through his work with NETCO, Dr. Henley directedthe implementation of the technology infrastructure required in 29 high schools acrossNortheast Tennessee to support the goals of the Investing in Innovation (i3) Grant. Inaddition, he designed the online course interface and learning management systems usedto produce the web-based curriculum used in the 29 high schools. In his new position at<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>, Dr. Henley is responsible for the planning and oversight of installation and maintenance of allinformation systems including support of faculty, staff, students and administration at all sites and the campusesof <strong>Tusculum</strong> in both academic and non-academic functions.

Durham and Irwin presented honorary degreesTennessee State Historian Walter Durham and JohnRice Irwin, founder and developer of the Museum ofAppalachia, were recognized by <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> withhonorary degrees for their lifetime achievements anddedication to service of others.Durham, who lives in Gallatin,was presented an honoraryDoctorate of Humane Lettersduring a brief ceremony inNashville in July, with <strong>Tusculum</strong>President Nancy B. Moodypresiding. The presentation tookplace in the home of his daughter,Anna Durham Windrow.Durham has several ties to the<strong>College</strong>. His wife, Anna, is a1949 alumna of the <strong>College</strong> and adescendent of its co-founders, theRev. Samuel Doak and the Rev.Walter DurhamSamuel Witherspoon Doak. His son, James Durham, is a1979 alumnus of the <strong>College</strong> and a current member of itsBoard of Trustees.In presenting the honorary doctorate, Dr. Moodyoutlined Durham’s notable professional achievementsand his service in the community.Durham is the award-winning author of 21 books,including “The Great Leap Westward,” “Old Sumner”and “Rebellion Revisited.” His latest book, “Grasslands,A History of The Southern Grasslands Hunt and RacingFoundation, 1929-1932,” was published in December2010. He has also been published in numerous periodicals,including “Tennessee Historical Quarterly.” Durham hasreceived the Tennessee History Book Award given bythe Tennessee Historical Commission and the TennesseeLibrary Association and the Award of Merit from theAmerican Association for State and Local History.He is a member of the Board of Advisors for theTennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, a member ofthe Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, amember of the statewide committee on The War of 1812Bicentennial and has received the Lifetime AchievementAward from the Tennessee Preservation Trust.In addition to his support of <strong>Tusculum</strong> that includesa donation of more than 100 special edition titles to theThomas J. He attended the University of Wisconsin andVanderbilt University, where he earned bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappaand Pi Sigma Alpha honorary societies and Sigma Nufraternity at Vanderbilt.Making a commitment to serve others using hisexpertise, Durham served on the Tennessee State IndustrialDevelopment Commission, was a 10-year member andchairman of the Tennessee Historical Commission, wasa member of the Tennessee Historical Records AdvisoryBoard and served as a civilian delegate to the Air ForceNational Security Forum.Irwin was presented with anhonorary doctorate in Septemberby Dr. Moody during the OpeningConvocation ceremony.Although Irwin is knownprimarily for his work with theMuseum of Appalachia nearNorris, Tenn., the scope of hisaccomplishments is much broader.“Irwin certainly has lived a lifethat adheres to the tenants of the<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> mission,” Dr.Moody said. “He has strived forsuccess in his personal life, whileJohn Rice Irwinnever forgetting his sense of community and his goal ofpreservation of the past for future generations. His love ofhistory and of the Appalachian Region has shone throughas he has lived and worked and served.”Irwin is the author of seven nationally and internationallydistributed books.He has lectured on the subject of Appalachian historythroughout the eastern United States.In 1989, Irwin was one of 29 individuals admitted tothe MacArthur Fellows Program. He was honored bythe East Tennessee Historical Society in 1992 as one ofnine East Tennesseans “whose accomplishments havedistinguished them far beyond East Tennessee,” and in1993, he was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Lettersfrom Cumberland <strong>College</strong>.In 1994, he was inducted into the Junior Achievementof East Tennessee’s Business Hall of Fame. Six yearslater, he was the recipient of the annual OutstandingEducational Service to Appalachia Award. He is the 2008recipient of the Trailblazer Award and in 2009 was namedto the Anderson County Hall of Fame.27


Faculty receive grant to leadinterdisciplinary researchinto local tobacco marketFaculty at <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> have received a researchgrant from the Appalachian <strong>College</strong> Association tocomplete an undergraduate research project focused on theGreene County tobacco market.The $10,000 grant will be used to conduct a crossdisciplineproject involving professors from the English,digital media, mathematics and psychology departments,and a number of <strong>Tusculum</strong> students under their direction.According to Chris Jacek, assistant professor of digitalmedia, the research project will focus on tobacco farming inGreene County with the goal of collecting the informationon video and producing a documentary of the findings.“We will be collecting information in a variety of areas,”said Jacek. “We do not have a defined direction, but will letthe story tell itself.”According to Dr. Clay Matthews, assistant professor ofEnglish, students will conduct a wide range of interviewsto gauge general public perception of tobacco, smoking andthe economic impact tobacco has had on the region.In addition, under the direction of Dr. Brian Davis,assistant professor of mathematics, students will investigatethe economic impact the tobacco market has had on GreeneCounty. “We will look at economic impact and look at GreeneCounty as a microcosm of the nation’s economy overall.”Students in the psychology department will conduct asurvey on attitudes toward smoking and look at it in thecontext of behavioral health concepts. They will be mentoredby Dr. Jennifer Harper, assistant professor of psychology.The results of the various components of the researchproject will be compiled and presented at the annualAppalachian <strong>College</strong> Association Conference. Accordingto Jacek, the documentary will not be completed at thattime, but they will present their research findings and reporton their work toward the documentary completion. Thedocumentary will give students in the <strong>College</strong>’s digitalmedia division the opportunity to work on a polishedproduct to be produced and presented to the public.Participating will be a mix of residential students and adultstudents in the Graduate and Professional Studies program.Museums accepted into the Conservation Assessment ProgramThe Museums of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> have been acceptedinto the Conservation Assessment Program and will beallocated $7,190 from the Heritage Preservation divisionof the National Institute for Conservation.This funding will be used to hire a professional conservatorto assess the collections and a historic preservation specialistto assess the historic buildings that house the Doak HouseMuseum and the President Andrew Johnson Museum and28Students producingnew Frontier MagazineBeginning this fall,<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> shifted fromproducing a student newspaperto a magazine. The magazineis created by students majoringin journalism and professionalwriting who are enrolled inthe class Journalism 113. Theclass is called “MagazineProductions.”The first magazine was a34-page publication which showcased events andplaces of the East Tennessee region. Writers inthe class are responsible for the stories while theeditors, sophomore Jonathan Nash of Talbott, Tenn.,and senior Heather Blanton of Maiden, N.C., areresponsible for the layout and design.Student writers in the class are taught how to writefeature articles and how to choose outside work fora regional magazine. Editors learn how to producea magazine from the ground up using the programAdobe InDesign.“Being an editor for “Frontier Magazine” allowsme to share the voices of the Greeneville and<strong>Tusculum</strong> communities in a journalistic format.The program has taught me life and career-basedskills such as communication, time management,professional forms of writing and making aninfluence to the community itself,” said Nash.The Frontier Magazine is available online and canbe viewed by going tohttp://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/309757.For future issues, the staff is hoping to increasethe number of print copies; however, the digitaldownload is always free.By Melissa Mauceri,sophomore journalism major from Pigeon ForgeLibrary. After the assessment is complete, detailed reportswith recommendations for improvements to both museumswill be presented to the <strong>College</strong>.“We are very excited about what participation in this programwill mean for the museums,” said Dollie Boyd, director of theMuseums of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>.“This will be a boon to ourmission to care for our collections and structures and could alsohelp us in the quest for larger awards in the future.”


Greek life returns to <strong>Tusculum</strong>Greeklife student organizations are making a returnto <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> with a sorority founded oncampus this past fall and a fraternity currently in theorganizational stage.The Alpha Omega Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phinational sorority was formed this fall and currently has 12student members. The Chapter was formed byco-founders Michelle Hoover, a senior English major fromSmyrna, Tenn., and Elizabeth Wright, a junior from Powell,Tenn., majoring in mathematics with a computer scienceconcentration. The group became affiliated with <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> in January and became an official <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong> student organization.The chapter’s advisor is FeliciaNunley, who has been a BetaSigma Phi for 41 years.“Michelle and Beth reallywanted to see a sorority on the<strong>Tusculum</strong> campus,” said CierraOckstadt, a sophomore businessmajor from Portland, and amember of the first pledge class.“Beth’s mother was a BetaSigma Phi, so it was a natural firstchoice.”Ockstadt added that it is a noncollegiatesorority, which is notalways associated with a collegeor university. Because of this, duesare much less than would be foundin a collegiate-affiliated sorority.The group will hold their firstrush fall semester of the 2012-13 academic year. ‘Scholars Then Soldiers’Exhibit explores alumniexperiences in the Civil WarAn exhibit that explores experiences of <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>alumni in the Civil War and the effect of the war on the <strong>College</strong>opened March 17 at the President Andrew Johnson Museum andLibrary on campus.“Scholars then Soldiers: <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> and the AmericanCivil War” is a student-produced exhibit focusing on theexperiences of 19 <strong>Tusculum</strong> alumni who fought during the war.The exhibit also examines how the Civil War affected theoperations of <strong>Tusculum</strong>. The museum is housed inside the “Old<strong>College</strong>” building, which was the only structure on what is nowthe main Greeneville campus at the time of the war.Museum studies students worked diligently throughout the pastsix months to put the exhibit together. ATHLETIC NEWSIndividual accomplishments highlight 2011 gridiron campaignSeveral school records were broken while the Pioneers garnered individual accolades during the 2011 <strong>Tusculum</strong>football season. It was a grueling, injury-plagued campaign that saw the Pioneers posting a 3-8 record.All-American quarterback and Harlon Hill Trophy finalist Bo Cordell, of Cincinnati, Ohio, suffered a seasonendingbroken foot in the third game of the year. Third-string signal caller Torrey Slaven of Winfield, Tenn.,stepped in and handled the quarterback duties in fine fashion, passing for more than 2,000 yards with 17 touchdownsand only three interceptions.Senior Rashaad Carter of Stone Mountain, Ga., became <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s all-time leader in receiving yards while earningAll-Conference and All-Region recognition. Carter totaled with 1,056 receiving yards, the third-best single-seasontally in school history and becomes the first player in school history to record more than 1,000 receiving yardsin multiple seasons. Carter’s 2,928 receiving yards are a school record and the seventh-most in league history,while his 210 career receptions are second-most at <strong>Tusculum</strong> and fourth in the SAC record books.Senior Deonte Gist of Greenville, S.C. earned All-Region accolades of the year for a second straight season, aswell as Daktronics All-America honors as a return specialist for the first time. He led the SAC in kickoff return averageat 29.43 yards per return, seventh-best in the country. Of his 21 returns, two were for touchdowns, includinga 94-yarder against Brevard <strong>College</strong> and a 92-yarder at Newberry <strong>College</strong>.Gist led the league in receptions for a second straight year, averaging8.1 catches per contest, which were second in the nation (NCAA II). The2010 consensus All-America receiver ends his <strong>Tusculum</strong> career as theprogram’s all-time leader in all-purpose yards (4,374) and kickoff returnsyards (1,593). It was the program’s sixth straight winningseason and 22 nd in the 30-year history of the storied-program.After setting an NCAA Division II record last year with 845 digs, Caitlyn Dean of Fort Wayne, Ind., averaged 6.45digs per set to rank third nationally, earning All-America First Team recognition for the second consecutive year.The two-time All-South Atlantic Conference First Team and All-Region honoree is first all-time in school historywith her 6.82 digs per set average, while her 1,529 total digs are the third-most ever by a Pioneer.Ashley Sarmiento was also named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II VolleyballSecond Team. Sarmiento, a 5-11 sophomore setter from Dayton, Ohio, has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average,while majoring in mathematics and math education (K-12). Sarmiento is the first Academic All-American® inprogram history. On the volleyball court, she finished second in the South Atlantic Conference and 39th in the countryin assists per set, averaging 10.29 helpers per frame (fifth in <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> single-season history).Sarmiento is very active in the community where she is serving her first term as president of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Council. Her community service activities include Pioneer Mentoring Program, Ride for Life,Scholar Athlete Student Leader and volunteering with the Greeneville-Greene County Humane Society.


ATHLETIC NEWSJones named Men’s Basketball CoachMichael Jones was introduced as <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s men’s basketball coach at a press conference thispast August at the Niswonger Commons.Jones comes to <strong>Tusculum</strong> after serving the last 12 years as head coach at South Atlantic Conferencemember Brevard <strong>College</strong>. Jones led Brevard to a historic campaign in 2009-2010, as the Tornados finishedthe season 21-10, while capturing the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title and theleague’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Jones was named the SAC Coach of the Yearas the team set or tied 27 individual and team records. The Maysville, Ky. native has amassed 214 victoriesin his 14 years as a collegiate head coach, including 175 inhis 12 seasons at Brevard. Jones has led his programs to threenational tournaments. Jones has also seen five of his playersoffered professional basketball contracts, including two in theNational Basketball Development League.“This is a proud day in the history of <strong>Tusculum</strong> basketball,”said Director of Athletics Frankie DeBusk. “I am confidentthat he will lead our program to success, both on and off thebasketball court, while positively representing our <strong>College</strong>,the SAC and NCAA Division II. Head Coach Adell Harris quickly jelled the team into contenders, and the Pioneersdefeated a number-one team for the first time in school history with a 63-51 victory over defendingnational champion Clayton State at the North Georgia Thanksgiving Classic in November.Against Clayton State, the Pioneers overcame an early five-point deficit and led 32-24 at halftime.The Pioneers expanded their lead to as many as 16 points in the second half before finishing off the12-point win. Junior guard April McCann of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., led <strong>Tusculum</strong> with a game-high 15points, and senior forwards Linda Aughburns of Fayetteville, N.C., and Staci Hicks of Loveland, Ohio,added 10 points apiece in the victory.Following the win over Clayton State, <strong>Tusculum</strong> climbed into the USA TODAY/ESPN DivisionII Coaches’ Top 25 Poll and moved as high as 16th in the rankings. The Pioneers defeated a secondnationally-ranked opponent with a 68-61 win over 11th-ranked Shaw in its home opener on Nov. 28enroute to a 5-0 start, its best since opening the 2006-2007 season with five straight wins.33


ATHLETIC NEWSFour inducted to Sports Hall of FameFour new members were inducted to the <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> Sports Hall of Fame during homecoming festivities inSeptember. This year’s induction class includes: Rachel Barron ’04 (women’s soccer), Alan Dunn ’04 (football), TaraHenderson ’04 (women’s soccer) and the late Tom Bryant (football coach).From 2000-2003, Barron recorded one of the most prolific scoring careers in <strong>Tusculum</strong> women’s soccer history. Sheowns seven school records, including her 66 career goals scored, which are the fourth most in South Atlantic Conferencehistory. In her 75-match career, Barron also dished out 20 assists, scored 152 points (first in <strong>Tusculum</strong> history/fifth in SAC history) and posted 22 match-winning goals (first in <strong>Tusculum</strong> history).In 1991, Coach Tom Bryant was hired to orchestrate the reinstatement of the sport of football at Tennessee’s first college.After a 41-year hiatus, football returned to the Greeneville campus due largely to the hard work and perseveranceof Bryant. He was a true ambassador of the game and was instrumental in giving the program the kick-start it neededto become the perennial power that it is today. The Flat Rock, Ky. native coached for four seasons on the <strong>Tusculum</strong>sidelines (1991-1994). After his first team went winless in the 1991 campaign, Bryant’s Pioneers rebounded by going15-14 in his final three seasons combined, including a 6-3 record in 1994.Alan Dunn accounted for one of the finest careers ever by a <strong>Tusculum</strong> offensive lineman. Dunn joins former teammatesPaul Czerniak ’03, Ricardo Colclough ’04 and Caleb Slover ’03’09 in the <strong>Tusculum</strong> Sports Hall of Fame. TheChattanooga, Tenn. native garnered All-South Atlantic Conference First Team honors three times, including his finaltwo seasons (2002, 2003) as he was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which recognizes the top offensivelineman or blocking back in the conference. Dunn is one of only three players in the 20-year history of the award toearn the honor multiple times.Tara Henderson holds the distinction as the first All-America honoree in the history of women’s soccer.She also became the first <strong>Tusculum</strong> student-athlete toearn All-South Atlantic Conference recognition fourtimes in her collegiate career. He also finished 11th at the Guilford CrossCountry Festival, 19th at the Carson-Newman Challenge and 21st at the South Atlantic Conference Championship. Hewas named to the SAC All-Freshman Team.On the women’s side, team captain Jenny Grant, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., once again proved to be <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s mostconsistent competitor. She finished in the top-30 on two occasions, including a 17th place finish at the Maryville Invitational.34

During college, shewas class president during her junior andsenior years. She was a member of The PioneerPlayers and played a variety of leadingroles in plays and operettas. She alsoplayed violin in the school orchestra, directeda class in ballroom dancing and wasa varsity cheerleader. Barbara continuedin the arts following graduation and wasvery active in musical circles in Knoxville.She also did some modeling and expressedsome of her creativity through drawing.She married in 1948 and moved to Jacksonville,FL, where she had her own radioshow. She was also featured in a nationalmusical magazine. Returning to Knoxvillein 1950, she was involved in producingand appearing in several television commercials.She was an active member of thechoir at Second Presbyterian Church. Barbarawrote Christian music with her auntJean Bond and has collaborated with PatBoone and Tennessee Ernie Ford. She alsohad her own television show in the early1960s featuring music. Barbara worked atthe University of Tennessee from 1966 to1968 as the assistant coordinator for internationalstudents. She started working atthe RCA Corporation in Hollywood, CA,in 1974 and worked directly with the president.She relocated to the RCA office inAtlanta in 1980 and retired in 1984. Afterretiring, she sang for five years with theRobert Shaw Symphony Orchestra Chorus.Barbara was also a creative writer and hadher own newspaper called, “Neighbor toNeighbor” in a retirement community shemoved to in the late 1980s.Earle and Meldrum Shanks Shotwell ’47’45 of Fern Park, FL, are celebrating 66years of marriage this year. Shine participated inthe initial writing and development of theprocess the commission developed for mediationand arbitration to resolve litigation.As a member of the Credentials Committeeof the commission since its inception, Shinehas passed upon the credentials of all Rule31 mediators in the state. He is a Fellow ofthe Tennessee Bar Association as well asthe American Bar Foundation, which has amembership limited to one-third of one percentof the lawyers in a state.Condolences to Frank Wolpert ’61 ofHolmdel, NJ, whose wife of 50 years,Lynn, passed away on December 30, 2011,after a long illness.Irene Park ’62 of Thousand Oaks, CA, aretired El Camino Real High School teacher,was awarded a 2010 “Walk of Hearts,”a distinguished honor given to teachers inrecognition of their dedication and continuedrecord of excellence in education.In 2003, she received the R.O.L.E. Adcock ’59 of Winchester, TN,passed away July 29, 2011. Mr. Adcockwas born on Easter Sunday and was nicknamed“Bunny” because of his birth date.This nickname stuck with him through hisyears at <strong>Tusculum</strong>, where he was well likedand respected. Mr. Adcock was a civilianelectrical engineer for 34 years at the NewarkAir Force Base in Ohio. Upon retiring,he returned to his beloved Tennessee andtook a position with the Arnold EngineeringCompany. Mr. Adcock was a memberof the First United Methodist Church ofWinchester and a member of the MasonicOrder. He was known for his devotion tohis family and his life-long love for automobilesand boating.Helen Honeycutt Hartman ’59 ofMosheim, TN, passed away January 10,2012. Mrs. Hartman was a retired schoolteacher who taught 39 and a half years in theGreene County School System. She taught26 of those years at Mosheim School. While gatheringinformation, Jim and Pat talked with ShannonGearity and learned she was from Johnson City,Tenn. and that her husband, Eugene, was a 1985<strong>Tusculum</strong> graduate.Eugene and Shannon have had a very interestinglife journey. After graduating from high schoolEugene did various jobs including working at afamily business in Massachusetts. Eventually, hefound his way to Tennessee and took a job withthe Paty Company in Johnson City. The ownerssuggested that Eugene take classes at <strong>Tusculum</strong><strong>College</strong>, and they would help pay for his tuition.In due time, Eugene worked his way up to storemanager. Everything was going well until anothercompany decided to acquire the Paty Company,but they did not, as Eugene puts it: “acquire me.”After his departure from the Paty Company,Shannon continued to work in a doctor’s office,and Eugene worked for a stock brokerage as acomputer analyst. These jobs were not satisfyingfor the couple, and the Gearitys decided that theyshould do something different, like start their“Golden Years” early.First, they took a trip to Alaska and whenthey returned home, came to the conclusion thatthey did not want to be completely idle, but didnot want to take a job in an office and contendwith office politics in an attempt to climb thecorporate ladder. They sold their home, got ridof unnecessary belongings and headed to BryceNational Park and took jobs with Xanterra. Theyfelt that this was a greatlife style and after acouple of years decidedto make a change butremain in the employment of Xanterra.The Gearitys have been at Yellowstone since2006 and have worked in various departments.Eugene provides transportation to park visitorsand along the way imparts wildlife, natural andgeological facts. Park visitors fully enjoy his talksand personal experiences. There is no questionthat both enjoy their jobs, are most enthusiasticabout meeting the public and providing great parkvisitor service and experience.They consider their jobs fun, meaningful andmost satisfying. On their days off, they get toexplore the many areas of the park and see natureunfolding before them. They take two, five-weekvacations a year. At such times they return to Tennessee,visiting friends and family on the way. Asthey say: “We love our golden years, feel we areon a continuous vacation and at the same time doingsomething constructive.” They have no intentionof moving back to city or suburban life.Eugene expressed a fondness for <strong>Tusculum</strong>and appreciates the doors that <strong>Tusculum</strong> helpedopen for him. He commented about the beauty ofthe old buildings on campus and how some havebeen nicely renovated.
