Academics4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> received reaffirmation of accreditation by theSouthern Association of <strong>College</strong>s and Schools Commission on <strong>College</strong>s forthe next 10 years. The announcement was made at the SACSCOC annualmeeting on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, in Louisville, Ky. The <strong>College</strong> hasbeen an accredited institution through the SACSCOC since 1926, and therecent review was the best in the history of the <strong>College</strong>. Reaffirmation is theresult of the hard work of faculty and staff and speaks highly of the strengthof the <strong>College</strong> in academic programs and support units.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> introduced two new degree programs, the Bachelorof Science in Business Administration and the Master of Arts in Teaching.Both programs are offered through the <strong>College</strong>’s Graduate and ProfessionalStudies program and are now offered at the Greeneville campus, the KnoxvilleRegional Center and the sites in Gray and Morristown. A new concentration inbehavioral health was also added in the psychology program.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> is expanding the way it serves both students and the community. The <strong>College</strong> began the process tooffer on-site instruction in Madison County, N.C., for the master’s degree programs in education.4Graduates from <strong>Tusculum</strong> will have additional opportunities to enter professional programs following thesigning of affiliation agreements late in 2010 with the Gatton <strong>College</strong> of Pharmacy at East Tennessee StateUniversity. The <strong>College</strong> also signed affiliation agreements with the Southern <strong>College</strong> of Optometry and theLincoln Memorial University-DeBusk <strong>College</strong> of Osteopathic Medicine. The <strong>College</strong> also signed an articulationagreement with Pellissippi State Community <strong>College</strong> in June, which provides Pellissippi graduates with anassociate’s degree a seamless admission process to <strong>Tusculum</strong>.4<strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> moved forward with implementation of Problem-Solving with Reflective Judgment, aQuality Enhancement Plan, begun as part of the SACSCOC reaffirmation process. The new initiative is consistentwith the <strong>College</strong>’s mission to cultivate the habits of practical wisdom and develop the skill of reflective thinking.As part of the initial implementation, faculty development opportunities were held to equip professors in targetedcourses to teach using problem-based learning, case-study method and reasoning through moral and ethicaldilemmas. This enriched instructional philosophy is intended to help students apply reflective judgment to illstructuredproblems which are designed into the coursework. In addition, Residence Advisors were trained tooffer student programming which involved students confronting real-world problems and learning to constructdefensible arguments for the solutions they selected.4Six new faculty were hired in the 2010-11 academic year, including Suzanne Byrd, assistant professor ofphysical education; David Frazier, assistant professor of computer science; Eva Lynn Cowell, assistant professorof management; Chris Jacek, assistant professor of digital media; Jason Jones, assistant professor of physicaleducations, and Clay Matthews, assistant professor of English.4The Corporation for National and Community Service has honored <strong>Tusculum</strong> <strong>College</strong> with a place on thePresident’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service toAmerica’s communities for the fifth time. This comes as a great honor to the <strong>College</strong> because service projects andservice learning experiences are part of the core of <strong>Tusculum</strong>’s mission that includes the Civic Arts and serviceto others. The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for itscommitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
