June has been another busy month atthe theatre, a very cold month too. Thanks to those of you who bravedthe weather to be part of our audiences for Tarantara! Tarantara! and abig thanks to all the production team, cast and crew.This newsletter is one where you need to get your diaries out and setsome dates as there is a lot of information coming out this month.....We are proud to announce our 2014 shows – West Side Story,Godspell, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and finishing up with aChristmas pantomime at the end of the year. We are all very excitedabout this programme and look forward to continue to bringing greattheatre to Orewa and the Hibiscus Coast.I would like to apologise about our membership lists particularly if youhave been experiencing trouble with either getting your emails,newsletters or membership reminders. We are using a new system andlike with all change there can be teething problems. If you, or if youknow of any member who is having trouble, please do not hesitate tocall the theatre and we can update you on your membership status orarrange for you to receive a newsletter. Our newsletters can also befound on our website and any previous copies can be accessed there.See you at <strong>Centrestage</strong>, Anna, Your PresidentEver wondered where the <strong>Theatre</strong> Term “Chookas”came from?According to one tradition, it started in Australia in the early1900s when chicken was regarded as a treat. As mostshows paid fees depending on the box-office takings, a fullhouse meant that the performers would be able to afford achicken meal (instead of bread). The cry “chook it is” wasshortened to ’chookas” and is now used by performers priorto a show regardless of the number of patrons and is a wishfor a successful turnout.:60 Centreway Road, Orewa . She has been part ofthe United Players / <strong>Centrestage</strong> Family since 1980, beingpart of the team that made the transition between the“Old Hall” and our current theatre.In that time Jill has been a sought-after Production Manager,the <strong>Theatre</strong> Manager and is now the most popular person at<strong>Centrestage</strong> - the Bar Manager.In 2012 Jill was awarded a Merit Award by MTNZ (Musical<strong>Theatre</strong> New Zealand), for her services to <strong>Theatre</strong>.One of Jill’s favourite theatre memories was whenSouth Pacific was held in the “Old Hall” - where budgets weretight, and creativity was essential. To get the effect of a planetaking off Ron Handford fixed two pairs of lights to a rope andhauled it up to the top of the stage - combined with soundeffects, it felt as though the plane had taken off over theaudience. OurFront of House Team got into the spirit ofthings and dressed up for Tit Willow Night.You know anything can be fixed with gaffa tape and asafety pin.Instead of saying that you're leaving, you say you'reexiting.At home, you "strike" the dishes in your kitchen.Going to Denny’s after the show is actually healthy asbecause at least that way you get something forbreakfast.“When I come into the theatre I get a sense of security. <strong>Centrestage</strong> Youth <strong>Theatre</strong>(CYT) NewsWith nearly 60 excited and nervous children turning upand a queue that went out the door, auditions for Beautyand the Beast were a great success.We saw some familiar faces, we met some new people,heard lots of breathtaking singing and saw some amazingdance moves.
