Print.In this collection of fourteen essays, Bell Hooks defines feminist pedagogy as anengaged pedagogy which accepts the differences among students and encouragesmultiplicities of voices and knowledge to challenge the boundaries that separatepeople and imprison them, thus, denying them freedom. In her essay "ConfrontingClass in the Classroom," Hooks demonstrates how noise, volume, and disruption indiscussion can create possibilities for students who do not understand academicdecorum because of their class background. In examining how to encouragestudents to participate in discussion in order to improve their writing, I will employHooks' theories about the reticence of students who have been prejudiced againstbecause of class. I will use this theory to inform my practice of writing to talk, thentalking to write.Annotated Bibliographyhe Annotated Bibliography must contain ten secondary sources that are significantto your topic. You are responsible for researching the major scholarly issuespertaining to your topic, and these issues must be represented in the AnnotatedBibliography. In other words, you should survey the kinds of scholarshippertaining to your topic so that you are familiar with the most reputable scholarsand the most relevant and/ or current issues surrounding that topic. The researchthat you choose for this assignment should include prominent books and articlesthat have stimulated significant scholarly debate. You will need to go beyondJSTOR for this task. Be sure that your annotations represent a variety of sources,especially books or sections of books and articles from major scholarly journals.Use extreme discretion in your use of internet sources. Each annotation should beat least 12 sentences long. Include how the source will be of use to your specificthesis.

Topic ProposalBe sure you have consulted me about your topic before you begin to write theproposal! The proposal should be approximately three pages in length and shouldconsist of the following:1. A clear statement that defines and limits your topic.2. A description of your research plan. Make clear the critical problem youwant to explore, why it is important, and how you plan to go aboutresearching it. Describe the critical perspective you plan to use (which mustin some way connect to New Historicism), and explain how you will use thisperspective to explore your topic. Also, explain how the topic connects tothe course topic of 'chivalry.'3. Do some preliminary research to ensure that the topic is viable. Make aworking bibliography for this research. You should find at least eightpotential secondary sources.Proposals will be presented to the class on March 20th. If you are not present onthis day, I will deduct points from your proposals (unless, of course, you have adocumented excuse, and even in that case, you should email a copy of the proposalto me). The proposal presentation should be approximately five minutes in lengthin addition to allowing time for questions.
