Principal’s MessageJoanne Harris—PrincipalIf we all did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.—Thomas EdisonAs the school year of 2013 draws to a close, I am astounded at thevast array of events and activities we manage to fit into these lastweeks of the term.Year 12 FinaleOne of the major occasions for this term was the Year 12 Awardsnight. This is a an opportunity for the formal celebration andrecognition of the academic, sporting and communityachievements of our Year 12 students. It is always a wonderfulevening and this year was no exception. It is also a time of sadness aswe farewell the cohort of 2013, many of whom still have the largechallenge of WACE exams to face. The evening marks the last timethese young people together as a group before they move into theworld of tertiary study, further education and training or employment.I have no doubt that the staff, parents and family membersattending, were inordinately proud of our Year 12 students. It was ahighly successful evening, which in part, can be attributed to theimmense organisation and hard work that occurs behind the scenes. Many thanks to the Year 12 Co-ordinator - Mr Bassanelli, StudentServices Manager—Mr Williams and Mr Platt and Mr Frisina, whoproduced all the media presentations and certainly his contributionenhanced my address this year! Thank you to Mrs Pugh whoorganised the awards and a special thanks to the Home Economicsstaff Mrs Hutton, Ms Crossan, Mrs Watts, Mrs Bertone and Mrs Dowlingfor the enjoyable supper that was provided at the end of theceremony.Award WinnersSincere congratulations to all subject and prize winners particularlythe school ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking) Dux—HamishClarke, the VET (Vocational Education and Training) Dux—AshleyBrown and the Honours Society inductees - Madison Andrews,Hamish Clark, Kristy Polkinghorne and Ashlie Sciberras. Sincerecommendations to the Year 12 group as a whole. Throughout the lastfew weeks you have conducted yourselves with maturity andrespect; the Leavers Assembly was highly entertaining and it wasdelightful to have the opportunity to informally talk with parents andYear 12 students at the morning tea that followed.EventsThe recent Choreography Night was an outstanding success with theusual high standard of choreography and performance on show. Our dancers, under the guidance of Mrs Merrin, really did themselvesproud with a hugely colourful, vibrant array of performances. MrPohara did a great job as compere and the standard of costumeswas once again fantastic, which can be attributed to Mrs CathyRichards and Mrs Rudman who give up their time to design andmanufacture a huge range of garments and accessories. Well doneto all the dance students, a thoroughly enjoyable night!Congratulations also to our Greenwood College Music students whoperformed at the recent Music Dinner. Parents and friends weretreated to an exceptional display of talent. Thank you to Mr Salmonand the very hard working Music Parent Committee for organisingthe evening.NAPLAN—National Assessment Program — Literacy and NumeracyThe Year 9 parents should have received their child's NAPLAN results,.Results were sent home with the students and a text message wassent to parents to confirm this. Well done to all those Year 9 studentswho participated, as our results this year are excellent with greatprogress made from Year 7 to Year 9 by large numbers of studentsparticularly in writing and reading. We have performed as expectedacross all areas and considering we have quite a number ofstudents with an ESL (English as a Second Language) backgroundour results are certainly a reflection of the hard work of our staff andstudents and the effectiveness of our programs.Congratulations (see photos below)I would like to also personally congratulateAnji Tao for qualifying for the AustralianMaths Summer School in Canberra. Therewere only six candidates chosen fromWestern Australia. Well done to EmmaPhilippe (Yr 11) and Asad Hosseini (Yr 9) (photos page 11) who wonOpen Girls Champion and Year 9 Boy Champion respectively at therecent interschool carnival. Jayden Coburn (Yr 10) has beenselected to represent WA in the 2013 State Basketball Team andHayley Smith (Yr 9) and Kimiora Rautao (Yr 10) have been selectedin the U16s National Indoor Netball Tournament to be held in Sydneyduring December 2013. Tahnee Quinlan representedWA at the National Taekwondo Championships inBrisbane recently and came away with a gold medalin her division. Congratulations also to Mr Tyler (Englishteacher) whose WA hockey team won a gold medalat the Australian Men‘s Over 50s at the AustralianMasters Hockey Championships at Olympic park inSydney (see photo right).AthleticsIt is also timely to recognise the enormous achievement of ourinterschool athletics squad, who under the leadership of Mr Guard, came 4th in "B" division. Considering the size of our school populationthis is a truly fantastic effort. To beat much larger schools such asWoodvale SC, Perth Modern School and Ocean Reef SHS is a trueindication of the commitment, talent and fortitude of our students.Well done to all the squad, all those lunch and recess trainingsessions really paid off!ExaminationsAs the year comes to a close there are a number of upcomingsignificant events. Good luck to all those Year 11s sitting exams in thenext few weeks. Best wishes also to the Year 9 and Year 10 studentsalso participating in examinations. Raylene ShiphamChaplainChaplain Chatter Direct line: 9243 9237The first few weeks of this term has seen a large focus on our Year 12s as they finish their schooling. This reminded me of my school yearsand how ―retrospect‖ is such a wonderful thing, if only I could have seen it in my teen years! Working with the Year 12s and helpingthem prepare for their leavers assembly, final Year 12 breakfast and graduation - one can't help but reflect and look back on the incredibleimpact that our schooling has had on us at the time and in the future as it really moulds us into who we will become in our lateryears. I am excited to say that I think this group of Year 12s are going to make us proud in years to come and this is my parting messageto you.We managed to organise another hip hop artist by the name of Hopp on Friday 25 October – all the way from California via City WideYouth. He and the team were very well received. It is always good to see young people connecting with our students and having apositive impact and role modelling for them.We celebrated World Teachers Day here at Greenwood on the 1 November, albeit aweek late as it was officially World Teachers Day on 25 October. I am sure all of us canremember that there is always a teacher who touched our lives and made a difference. This is a career path that sometimes gets taken for granted and doesn‘t receive a lot ofthanks, so next time you are around anyone who works at a school, remember to thankthem for all they do for your child or children on any given day.Other than that, term four is ridiculously busy. After attending the Choreography night and Music dinner concert, I am once again veryproud to be associated with Greenwood College. We have our Student Council elections happening on 13 November, triple PPP isunderway, transitions for the Year 7s and their parents and students preparing for exams and planning for 2014, just to mention a few.The older I get the faster the year seems to fly, it feels like only yesterday that I wrote my first newsletter article and introduced myself. Iam really hoping to cement some of the things we started this year and develop on new ideas, concepts and projects.Until next timeHip Hop artist ―Hopp‖ picturedright entertaining studentsGreenwood College November 2013 Page 4

Year 8—Hannah Waddell and Gavin AndersonIt is now the start of Term 4, the last term of the year! We hope that everyone had a fantasticholiday but it‘s time to get into the old routine we love to hate. The term started off strong with the Interschool Carnival held on the 22 October. Twenty two Year8 students participated and we may have not been all in the same events but the one thing wehad in common is that we all tried our best and did not give up. All the participants will also berewarded with a pizza lunch. We also recently had a hip-pop rapper named ‗Hopp‘ come to the school on 24 October. Hearrived from LA, California a week ago and already got all of the school onto their feet and evengot Angus up to dance to his rapping. The whole school had a brilliant time and we hope tohave him back soon.Year 8s should also get their Councillor nomination forms asap. If you are willing to take on the responsibilities of being a Year 9 StudentCouncillor, make sure you get them in quick as they are due soon.On the 18 October, the school celebrated the Year 12s last week of being students at Greenwood College. An all school assembly wasorganized and orchestrated by the year 12 students. It was a very comical performance presented for us all.Year 9—Bella Peardon and Thomas LarkinsWelcome back everyone to the very last term of 2013—which will fly past! The school stillexpects you to have a high attendance rate, we understand if you‘re tired but just push througha little further. As we all know the Year 9s got their NAPLAN results back with some awesomeresults so a big well done for that!We would like to congratulate all of the Dance students who performed at Choreography nightat Sacred Heart. It was a great, smooth night and we would like to thank all of the helpers whohelped backstage. Most of all, on behalf of all the Year 9 Dance students, we would like tothank Ms Merrin for being a wonderful help and an awesome teacher who organised this wholeperformance. She also choreographed most of the dances, so we would like to thank her for allthe hard work she has done for us—thank you Ms Merrin. Also a massive congratulations to all of the Interschool team who participated at Interschool 22 October. Everyone tried their hardest andit all paid off because we ended up coming fourth. Thank you to the teacher who helped with the day. We would like to give a hugecongratulations to Asad Hosseini who beat the record for 200m—he also was crowned Year 9 Boy Champion. We that‘s just about it from us. Just remember it is coming in to summer, so make sure to be sun safe while still in school uniform. Good luckwith our first ever exams.Until next time, have a great term!Year 10—Jessica Laden and Jeffrey AndersonHi everyone! There are only two months left until we have finished school for this year—meaning that these are the last two months of us being fully fledged lower school students!!Last term, after a slight delay, Greenwood College hosted its annual Greenwood Games.Congratulations to all those who won any sort of prize on the day, being best dressed orChampion boy or girl. Those students who performed exceptionally well on the day wereinvited to join the Interschool Athletics Squad to participate in a full day of athletics where thesquad would compete against other schools from within the district. This day was held on the22 October at Challenge Stadium. The College came fourth in ―B‖ division which was a greatfeat, so congratulations to all those who participated. This term has shown how close we are as a year group to upper school as students havestarted their Certificate I in Work Preparation within the S&E Department and our chosen upper school Maths courses. The Cert I is anintroduction to employability skills which allows us to be ranked as either competent or incompetent on our ability in three different unitsof competencies. Our Year 10 Maths classes have now been split into all of the temporary upper school classes as they are due tochange next year depending on people‘s timetables and to cater for the Year 12 students that will also be in the classes. On Friday 25 October, the Dance students had their Choreography Night where they showcased the dances that they had beenworking on all year. It was a great show put on by all the students and congratulations to all those Year 10s who won awards on thenight.During week 6, we have our end of year English, S&E and Science exams. They are only a month away so it‘s not too early to try and startstudying and preparing for them as they could ultimately decide whether you pass or fail the subjects. That‘s all from us….Greenwood College November 2013 Page 5

Year 11—Miriam Lenghel and Matt LangfordHi all,We are quickly getting towards our final exams for Year 11 for ATAR students, and final assignments fornon-ATAR students. This means that even the weather is getting nice and the beach is calling, it is timeto put in that final big effort to do the best that you can. Remember that doing well in Year 11 reallysets you up to succeed in Year 12. The exams also help decide if you have chosen the right courses fornext year. This week is exciting as we are putting in our order for next year‘s leavers‘ jackets. By ordering them now we hopefully will get them earlynext year. PLEASE remember when choosing a size that it will be almost seven months before the cool weather comes back and manyof us will grow (some by a lot) so don‘t order what fits now, but what will fit in seven months.Nominations for School Council are now open. It is a privilege and honour to be able to represent your school as the School Captainbut it requires hard work and responsibility. Good luck to those that are nominating. Following the school council election students willbe able to nominate for a student representative position and if enough students nominate, an election may occur. In Year 12, thestudent representatives will be responsible for the final ball preparations, the leavers‘ assembly, the leavers breakfast, and will help withthe graduation assembly. The Athletics Carnival was held recently and was a great day. Everyone was dressed in their faction colours and joined in the activities.Well done to those that won their events, but a bigger ―well done‖ to those that participated even if athletics is not their sport. Wewouldn‘t have an Athletics Carnival if we don‘t have participants. Well done to Emma Philippe for winning champion girl at theInterschool Carnival.Other events happening this term include the Dance Choreography night, the Music dinner, and the Interschool Volleyball trip. Best ofluck to any Year 11s that are involved.Until next time,IEC—Hermela Belay and Roger NetOn 18 and 19 October, the Intensive Exercise Crew (Mr Filidei, Mr Dunn, Mrs Hawkins and Mr Clark–photo below) took part in the Oxfam Trailwalker. Where Are They Now? Myles Pollard—School of 1989Now a big-time Hollywood movie star, Myles Pollard was already displaying histalent and passion for acting and the arts when he first featured in plays andmusicals here at Greenwood College, where he was a student from 1985 to1989. Myles has gone on to become a household name, as an actor in films(The Turning, Drift, Wolverine, Thirst and many others), television (McLeod'sDaughters, Home and Away, Packed to the Rafters, Underbelly: A Tale of TwoCities, Sea Patrol), and theatre. In addition to acting, Myles has a talent for writing, producing and directing. One of Myles' most recent achievements was his production of the feature filmDrift, in which he also starred as the lead character 'Andy'. In the works forseven years, the film entered production and was shot on location here in WA,with a budget of $11.4 million. Add in the stellar cast, including SamWorthington, and you can begin to understand why Myles considers Drift to beone of the most rewarding and special projects he has undertaken.Actor/Producer/DirectorDuring his time at Greenwood College, Myles enjoyed school music camps and competitions – he was the very firsttrumpet player in the school band and music was his favourite subject. Following his graduation, Myles attendedCurtin University, where he briefly studied Social Sciences, before embarking on a challenging and perhaps definingjourney to the desert and open-cut mines surrounding Kalgoorlie where he worked as a field assistant. It was duringthis time, alone and working hard in the middle of the desert, that Myles made the decision to pursue a career inacting. Myles didn't want just one job, but many. He saw a career in acting as an opportunity to play lots of differentcharacters, and that as an actor he would never have just one job, but a career playing hundreds of differentpeople in many diverse professions. Following this revelation, everything else started to fall into place.Myles completed a Bachelor of Arts in Education, majoring in Drama and English, here in Perth, went on to teach inSydney schools, and was then accepted to study acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Since then,Myles has not looked back. He possessed a long-running role as 'Nick Ryan' in the television show McLeod's Daughters(2001-2005), for which he was nominated twice for the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actor. Besides his film work, Mylesoften performs on stage in theatre jobs offered to him here in Perth with Black Swan Theatre, and in Sydney. When asked what message he would like to convey to Greenwood College students, Myles said ―Don't be afraid tofail. Failure is a positive because it's the only way to get better. Never give up, fight the good fight and choose yourown path.‖ Myles admits that it might sound like a cliché, but what he said has certainly worked for him. Myles hastravelled down many paths to end up where he is today, and all along the way he never gave up – Myles had adream, and it was this dream along with passion, determination (and a bit of talent!) that has helped him achievewhat he has.Well done Myles – another Greenwood graduate out there making their mark on the world!Currently showing at selected cinemas across Perth is The Turning, an Australian film based on Tim Winton's writingsand featuring Myles, alongside Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Miranda Otto and Hugo Weaving.Another ex-student making a great contribution to the nation.Kristy Fenner - Public Relations Officer "Photo courtesy of Marquee Management"Uniform ShopEnd of NovemberHelp Needed!!!!With the new Year 8 enrolments, we are putting out a big call for anyone who can offer20—30 minutes between 8.20—8.45am on a Tuesday or Friday mornings towards the end ofNovember, to help out our busy ladies in the uniform shop. ESLStudy Group SuccessBeatrice, Ayoung, Aljean, Irene and Nancy (pictured left with Ms Christina Kolodij) allwanted to pursue a career in nursing. These five students faced an enormous challengewhen they enrolled in the pre nursing course at TAFE this year. All five girls had the added challenge of being ESL students; however their commitmentand dedication has paid off and they are all on the pathway to a great future innursing. It was my pleasure to see them overcome the challenges and language barriers theyhave had to face in their education with enthusiasm as they kept their goals in sight. I wish them good luck for the future.- Christina KolodijHealth NurseHealth ManagementPANADOL CONCERNSPlease be advised that the Health Centre doesn‘t routinely stock Panadol. Panadolwill only be given to students in an EMERGENCY and with consent from their parents/guardian.It is far more important to investigate WHY you may have pain than automaticallyresort to painkillers. For example: It has been noted that many students have beenpresenting with headaches and requesting Panadol, however when asked if theyhave had anything to eat or drink the reply is often NO.
