Duff Blackburn 26.09OVERSEAS RACES. PIKE'S PEAKSMARATHONOn July 22nd Joss Naylor arrived in the U.S.A. forthe PIKES PEAKS MOUNTAIN MARATHON, Colorado U.S.A. tobe held on Sunday, August 3rd. What follows is Joss *own account of the trip."I arrived at Boulder Colorado on Tuesday 22nd ofJuly after my first real taste of modern air travel andstill trying to really believe that America is such abig expanse of land. It has to be seen to be believed.I am staying about 10 miles out of Boulder on a newhousing estate. Quite a nice area right out in thecountry. I have today to acclimatise as we are about6,500 ft. above sea level, 97° to 100° F. and thehumidity, an all time low of about 5%. On my firstrun I decided that 5 miles would be enough, but after Ihad run for 3 miles, I had no saliva left in my mouth andI just dried up. I stopped at a golf course sprinklerand managed a mouth full of water to get me home. All the
- 47 -countryside is dried out and all that grows is irrigated.After about 4 days I moved up to Pine Brook Hills,a wooded area at about 7000 feet. Real Indian Country.The trees only grow to about 30' and they are all thesame size. You would think they had all been plantedon the same day, but in the low humidity they just can'tgrow any taller. My running is improving but the heatand low humidity is taking its toll. Im sleeping 10hours at night and still starting to 'drop off duringthe day. After another three days during which I havebeen chased by every dog in Pine Brook Hills, I move100 miles south to Manlston Springs to stay with Gia-Fu-Feng for rehabilitation and a taste of health food. Itsjust the place, right at the foot of Barr Trail which is thestart of the Pike's Peaks race. I feel better rightaway. The humidity is up to 40% and its Monday night,July 28th, so I get the maps out to see which way thepaths go. On Tuesday morning I get up at 6.0 a.m. fora run up Pikefe Peak, or is it just imagination? Afterabout 5 a mile I turn off a Forestry type road onto azig zag path up through the forest. After about 3 milesand 300 ft. of climbing the path levels out and througha gap in the trees about 6 miles ahead,I can see thehuge Pikes Peak mountain. It still looks a mile high.I seem to be running well. The mouth is getting a bitdry but after another mile I come to a lovely spring.Down on the hands and knees for a long drink. The bestwater I've tasted since I left Lakeland. Its great andaway I go up through the timber line at about 12000 ft.Over the next 500 ft. things start to go wrong. Myhead starts to thump. I have to walk and by the timeI reach the summit I am holding onto the rocks feelingdizzy. I sit down and my head clears. I stayed atthe summit about two hours having refreshment at thehotel there and meeting up with a few other runners upthere acclimatising. They seem to be having the sametrouble with hearts all beating three times faster thannormal. I decided to walk down. It was never endingand took over 3 hours.On Wednesday I was full of determination to run tothe summit after a talk with Gia Fu Feng. He gave mevitamin E and C and a spoon full of cooking oil to overcomethe dry altitude. I set off at a slow pace
