AWARD * * *Mike Short in his third season on the fells beatHarry Walker (Winner 1973, runner-up 1974) for theF.R.A. Award. Last year’s winner, Jeff Norman didnot compete in as many fell races this year, thoughhe retained his Three Peaks title. Jeff was runningmore road races in hopes of Olympic selection for1976 in the Marathon.Mike took the lead from Harry at the beginningof June, and, more or less, kept it. The noninclusionof B Category races in this year's competition,some of which Harry won, may have had an effect on theresult (the Statistican does not have all the resultsavailable for a comparison). Certainly Brian Finlayson,and Joss Naylor benefited from the new scheme, finishing3rd and 4th with the races they often win beingclassed as A races. The limit to the number of racesfrom which runners may acquire points, half the totalnumber of A Category races, had no effect on theresults. There were 24 A races and only Mike Shortgained points in more than 12 (13, in fact).Since the change in the scheme, many organisershave attempted to have their races upgraded eitherby changing the course or discussing its merits withCommittee Members. New races or courses have to berun once before a decision is made on grading. Gradingof new races is difficult. The formula, which is onlya guide, of 250 feet gained or lost per mile and twothirds fell and very rugged, can only be applied from
