Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church DeLand, Florida January 2013

The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--isshrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long beencelebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day,as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian andancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, andhow did he become associated with this ancient rite? The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saintsnamed Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. Onelegend contends that Valentine was a priest who served duringthe third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decidedthat single men made better soldiers than those with wives andlies, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizinginjustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to per-marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actionsdiscovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.famithformwereOtherstories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attemptingto help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to onelegend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first"valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with ayoung girl--possibly his jailor's daughter--who visited himduring his confinement. Before his death, it is allegedthat he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine,"an expression that is still in use today. Althoughthe truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, thestories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroicand--most importantly--romantic figure. By the MiddleAges, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine wouldbecome one of the most popular saints in Englandand France. To the Annual Congregational Meeting Part 2.Items on the agenda include many issues that affectall members of the congregation. Please don’t miss this chance to be part of the decision-makingprocess for our church in the comingyear.
