Thisfall, salmon migration has turnedthe waterway into a freeway oflove. In what is shaping up to be thebest run for six years (2008 to2009 numbers were so low thatriver and ocean salmon fishingwere outlawed ) adult Chinookare now heading up-river tocomplete their lifecycle. Shewill complete requirements for the BITprogram at the end of December but willcontinue her education to earn an Associatein Science degree. Her long-term goal is tobecome a plan reviewer.Reese started at the City in 2006, workingas an administrative secretary in the CityManager’s Office. After serving as a customerservice specialist for that office andthe Building and Safety Division, she begandoggedly to their destiny – thefish have no focus other thanto reach the waters where theyspawned. Whether they mate ingravel beds or are perfunctorilyrelieved of eggs and milt at theNimbus hatchery, they will allbe dead within weeks.Fish that hatched four yearsago now measure up to four feetand can weigh 50 pounds. Allbear scars of a long trek from thePacific. The krill diet that coloredtheir flesh is hundreds milesbehind; they have not eaten forweeks. By the time they reachSan Juan Rapids, degeneratingflesh has absorbed much of theirscales. Decay mottles their sides. Some fish have turned vividmagenta in color. Hooked jawsand dog-like teeth transformmale profiles. But to Chinookhens, such cruising gargoyles areprinces. Though the act will killthem, these fish mean to mate.In full fury during November, the salmon run continues throughDecember and – in dwindlingnumbers -- until after Christmas.Experts predict up to 50,000salmon may run this season.“It’s a good number,” observesCalifornia Fish and Wildlifescientist Bob Titus. “The departmentwill count carcasses forweeks to make a population estimate, but it looks like stock iscontinuing to rebuild.”With runs of less than 6000 fishrecorded six years ago, Chinooktraining as a permit technician in 2009.She currently helps customers with permittingquestions and issues, processesresidential and commercial applicationand permits, and coordinates building planreviews and inspections, in addition to otherBuilding and Safety Division tasks.“Being awarded the scholarship is anaccomplishment that makes me feel great;plus it helps with school expenses,” shesaid. The scholarship is named for Stoddard,a long-time SVABO member who wasdevoted to the work of quality codes anduniform enforcement and a strong supporterof building code enforcement education.Although there can be more than one scholarshipawarded, Reese is on the only 2013winner.HSource: City of Rancho Cordovaextinction in the American Riverseemed possible.
