They went for thefirst and again, a pass tryfailed.On first down, McGregerexploded for 16 yards to the50. Then on a third and 11,Dailey was almost sacked, butsomehow escaped and pickedup 22 yards to the NorthDelta 29. McAlexander caught sixMA’s previous trips tothe title game came in 2007(a loss to Centreville) and in1988 (a loss to WilkinsonChristian).The Patriots have beatenCanton, Indianola andNorth Delta in the playoffs,while the Cougars havedowned Columbia, Lamarand Simpson.Brookhaven is led by thepassing and running of seniorquarterback GagePosey, who has plenty of talentsurrounding him,including receiver SethRushing.The Cougars will beseeking their second statecrown in four years. The Devils went on ascoring binge to run out thequarter, leading by six at onepoint and ending at 19-14.They stretched that lead to10 in the first minutes of thesecond frame (24-14),through hustle and accu<strong>rates</strong>hooting. Both squads wereputting on an athletic display.They were taking it to thehoops in turn. Byers was winningthe long-ball war. TheLions had all but erased thedeficit at the half, 36-35.They tied it and then tooka one-point lead at the charitystripe in the first two minutesof the third. But the Devils’forks were still hot and theymoved to another six-pointlead 52-46. The Lions cut intothe difference again just secondsbefore the third expired,52-50.The fourth was a virtualslugfest. The war waged backand forth throughout thefourth with neither team gaininga decisive advantage. Thetwo-point margin separatedthe teams the entire period.There were 12.9 secondsremaining and the Devilsleading by two. The Lions hadtwo players foul out but theyhad a trio of opportunities atthe free-throw line. Theymade one of six.
