During this period, the Institute could make significant headway into severalresearch and administrative programmes. All the pending assessments up to March 2011of the administrative, technical and scientific staff have been completed. The existingSSAs and Scientists have been posted as Scientist B with effect from the dates ofobtaining of their Ph. D degrees.A 'Statistics for Biologists' course for post graduate students was conducted athPuthenthope campus on 18 July 2011. The medicinal plant garden set up by JNTBGRI atthe premises of Government L P School, Kallar was handed over to the Panchayatformally on August 3, 2011. Medicinal plant seedlings were distributed to the schoolstudents as part of this programme. JNTBGRI formally launched the 'Haritha Veethi' -thGreening of Highway between Chipanchira and Elavupalam on 5 August 2011 and 400tree species were planted by the students of Jawahar Colony LP School on either sides ofthe road and shielded by bamboo fencing. These plants are being looked after by thestudents and we are monitoring them on monthly basis. JNTBGRI signed MOU withNBRI for exchange of plants, exchange / training of personnel etc during August 2011.A training programme on medicinal plants used in Traditional and Folk practices wasth th thconducted for two batches of 50 AYUSH doctors o 24 and 2 August 2011. The 12Plan Proposal (<strong>2012</strong> – 2017) of JNTBGRI was prepared and sent to the MoEF and to theKerala Government. I attended the pre-meeting of the Directors of KSCSTE ResearchthInstitutes at KSCSTE on 14 September,2011 and the KSCSTE Annual General Bodythmeeting with Hon'ble Chief Minister on 15 September 2011 . I delivered the InauguralAddress at the Conference on Biodiversity Conservation through Plant BiotechnologicalInterventions and released the proceedings of National Conference on Biodiversity heldon 28 - 29 September, 2011 at All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram sponsored byUGC, New Delhi.An Outreach programme for High school to Plus two students from various schools ofthe state was conducted at JNTBGRI from 26 - 30 September 2011. The students wereexposed to the exciting world of carnivorous plants at JNTBGRI, given lectures andshown films of Charles Darwin's voyage on board the Beagle.I attended the National Research Advisory Committee (Agriculture, Veterinary and Herbal)thmeeting of National Innovative Foundation at IIM, Ahmedabad on 9 October, 2011 .ndWe conducted the Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Law and IIDr. M. Thangavelu Memorial Lecture at Saraswathy Thangavelu Extension Centre ofthJNTBGRI, Puthenthope, Thiruvananthapuram on 31 October 2011 .32


I attended the Meeting of Directors of R & D Centres of KSCSTE at Kerala StateththPlanning Board on 27 October 2011 and presented 12 Five Year Plan activities ofJNTBGRI.I conducted Ph. D Preliminary Qualifying Examination and viva-voce of my Ph. Dthstudent at Kannur University on 18 November 2011.I attended the Valedictory Session, Panel Discussion and Concluding Session ofNational Symposium on Sustainable Management of Biodiversity using Science &Technology and served as panellist, and showcased JNTBGRI to the gathering. Thisthmeeting was organised by National Academy of Sciences, on November 25 , 2011 atUniversity of Kerala in Session VII Biodiversity.I attended the Scientific Advisory Committee meeting of Mitra Niketan, K V KthVellanad on 28 November 2011 and gave relevant inputs for the projects reviewed.From 6 - 10 December, 2011 JNTBGRI conducted the TBGRI Open House programmefor which the Logo was released by the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala,thSri Oommen Chandy on 29 November 2011.The original name of TBGRI (JawaharlalNehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute) was restored during the OpenHouse 2011 celebrations. The Open House showcased the developmental and researchactivities of JNTBGRI to approximately 35,000 visitors who thronged the campusduring those five days. During the Open House program we organised a mushroomcultivation training program for rural women on all five days, sponsored by NABARD.The Institute earned revenue of ` 3 lakhs from sale of plants and Institute publicationsduring the Open House .JNTBGRI helped to organize the Consultative Workshop on Agastiamala BiosphereReserve in collaboration with Anthropological Society of India on 19/01/<strong>2012</strong>. I chairedththe Short Lecture Session of the 12 International Congress of Ethnopharmacologythorganised by School of Natural Products, Calcutta on 19 February, <strong>2012</strong>.An MOU was signed with Oushadhi, Thrissur regarding the Clinical trials of athHepatoprotective Herbal Drug on 11 January <strong>2012</strong>. I chaired the Life Sciences sessionthof the 24 Kerala Science Congress held at Kottayam on 29-31 January <strong>2012</strong>, organisedby KSCSTE.Two Research Council meetings were held in June 2011 and February <strong>2012</strong>.JNTBGRI has been sanctioned a project worth `10 lakhs by NABARD Regional Office,thThiruvananthapuram for setting up of a compost manufacturing facility on 29 February<strong>2012</strong>. This project was launched by Sri K. P. Mohanan, Hon'ble Minister forAgriculture, Government of Kerala, in presence of CGM, NABARD. The construction33


of the shed is going on and we have also been sanctioned purchase of a Mini lorry andshredder in this project.I attended the RAMC (Research Advisory and Management Committee ) of BotanicalthSurvey of India at Botanical Garden of Indian Republic (BGIR), Noida on 5 March<strong>2012</strong> and gave my inputs.I have initiated the settlement of all pending SE and UC of research projects sanctionedto JNTBGRI by MoEF, Government of India and WGDP, Government of Kerala . I haveattended all meetings of Directors of Research Institutes under KSCSTE with EVP andthpresented relevant details of the Institute. I have helped to prepare and submit the 12Plan Document (<strong>2012</strong> -2017 ) to MoEF, GOI and Kerala State Planning Board.JNTBGRI organised one day seminar on “Scientific Knowledge for AgriculturethDevelopment” supported by Doordarshan Kendra , Thiruvananthapuram on 26 March<strong>2012</strong> which was aired on Krishi Darshan on the next day. About 20 JNTBGRI Scientistsinteracted fruitfully with 60 farmers brought by Doordarshan Kendra on fruit trees,horticulture, medicinal plants, mushroom, bamboos on this occasion .I assessed the performance of two JRF's for upgradation of their CSIR fellowships atndNIIST, Pappanamcode, Thiruvananthapuram on 2 April <strong>2012</strong>.I attended the National Biodiversity Authority Meeting (Medicinal Plants Session) heldthat Chennai on 14 April <strong>2012</strong> in my capacity as Member of the Committee and offeredmy suggestions and comments.I served as resource person for INSPIRE Science Camp for high school and plus twostudents sponsored by DST, Govt of India and delivered a lecture and interacted withthththem at Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala on 8 and 9May <strong>2012</strong>. I had evaluated two Ph. D thesis from M G University. I organised thestManagement Committee meeting of JNTBGRI on 31 May, <strong>2012</strong>.I have reviewed about6 projects to CSIR, KSCSTE, DBT etc. and evaluvated two Ph. D theses during thisperiod.JNTBGRI has submitted a One Crore Mega Agri project to Kerala BiotechnologyCommission which has been reviewed and will be sanctioned shortly. This project isintended to be conducted at Puthenthope campus of JNTBGRI and will concentrate onmass multiplication of bananas and ornamental plants for commercial utilisation.JNTBGRI has been selected as one of the stake holders of the New Generation BiotechIncubation Centre at Life Sciences Park, Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram, which is acollaborative initiative of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC).34


JNTBGRI has also submitted a `3 crore Mega project to Kerala State HorticultureMission. The major areas of activity of this project are commercial multiplication ofBananas, Anthurium, Nepenthes etc. We have also asked for a 25,000 sq. ft building tohouse the commercial micropropagation unit in this project.JNTBGRI is offering Consultancy Service to Finura Bioteks, Nagercoil to set up a planttissue culture laboratory. JNTBGRI is undertaking the laying out of the Garden at thecampus of Women and Children's Hospital, Thycaud on consultancy basis. The CentralUniversity, Kasargode officials have approached us to design the Garden of theircampus and it is being negotiated. The Royal Medical Consultancy, Singapore, hasapproached us to transfer product data and patent of our product Eczemol, which is aherbal dermal ointment for burns and eczema and this is also in negotiation stage. Theyhave agreed to do clinical trial and toxicity testing at Health Sciences Authority underMinistry of Health, Singapore.JNTBGRI is also about to sign MOU for foreign collaboration with South Korea R& Dcentres like Korea National Arboratum and Ewha Women's University. One young ladystudent, Ms Sangmi Eum, Curator of Natural History Museum is already at JNTBGRIstudying the orchid genus Arundina and she will be around until August <strong>2012</strong>. Othermembers of the team who will be visiting JNTBGRI are Dr. Kwang Woo Park, Director,National Arboretum and Prof.Nam Sook Lee, Ewha Womans University.JNTBGRI is presently conducting pre-clinical trials of a Hepatoprotective, AntidiabeticImmunomodulatory and Antioxidant poly herbal formulation after having signed anMOU with Shahul Hameed Vaidyan, a traditional healer of Karunagapally. The resultsare very promising and we hope to release the drug in to the market shortly aftercompleting all formalities.JNTBGRI and HELP Foundation, an NGO from Kollam have jointly submitted aresearch project to MoEF, Government of India entitled “Development of traditionalKavu (sacred grove) as nature's class room in a Kanyavanam (virgin forest )” to beimplemented in 100 selected primary schools of Kerala at a cost of `22 lakhs. Thisproject is primarily aimed at creating awareness on biodiversity conservation,environment protection and creation of urban forests primarily targeting the High schoolstudents of Kerala.JNTBGRI has entered in to an agreement with the Janasree Mission of Kerala to supply 1lakh Banana plants in poly bags at a cost of ` 10/-plant.The Institute is facilitating the establishment of herbarium in 6 schools of North Parur byway of supplying herbarium sheets to them and also training the students in herbariumsheet making and its upkeep and maintenance.35


JNTBGRI has helped to identify and label all the trees of the Medical College campus,Thiruvananthapuram and we have also supplied tree saplings to the VSSC and CDScampus, Thiruvananthapuram.A one time grant of Rupees Four crores has been graciously sanctioned to JNTBGRI bythe Government of Kerala to settle all pending assessment arrears, promotional arrears,loans from project cell repayment, PLI arrears etc during June <strong>2012</strong>. This has come as agreat relief when the Institute is passing through seven financial crisis and is unable topay off with out the generous grant.Efforts are also on to secure KSCSTE service pension for the staff of KSCSTE and itssister institutes from the Government of Kerala and I am also involved along with therespected EVP and other Directors of sister institutions in achieving this goal.I am actively involved in implementing a mega project entitled “SystematicDocumentation of Traditional knowledge related to plants used for food and Ayush&Indigenous medicine” sanctioned under the Central Sector Scheme for up gradationto Centre of excellence by Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and familyWefare, Govt of India since April 2010. The total outlay of the project is Rs. 190.81lakhs.The project is envisaged to conduct systematic documentation of TK in selected210 gramapanchayaths of kerala (15 each from 14 districts ). The main objectives ofthe project are Deployment of approved HRD and organization of small workshopscontact programmes, field survey, collection and inventorization of traditionalpractices, data pooling, study, analysis and organization of data, preparation of videofilms and database and digitalization of selected traditional and folk practices,dissemination of documented knowledge to AYUSH doctors through workshops,publication of Annual Journal of Traditonal and Folk practices, publication of scientificbooks and IEC materials, publication of annual reports of the activities and achievementsof the centre and training of AYUSH doctors on traditional /folk practices.I am workingas Editor of the 'Journal of Traditional and Folk Practices' published by AYUSH, GOIand the first issue of the same is in press.26.
