Dolch came up witha list of 220 words that he claimed comprised 50to 75 percent or more of the words in children’sreading material. The words in his list contain allparts of speech except nouns.Over the decades, textbook publishers andchildren’s book authors have used the Dolch 220list as a guide. Obviously students who canrecognize most words by sight are better, morefluent readers. Young readers benefit frommemorizing these high-frequency words.Dolch also developed a list of 95 nouns.
