1CHAPTER 1IntroductionPURPOSE OF THE PLANA bicycle master plan provides strategic direction for the development of a comprehensive bicycletransportation network. This Plan is Rancho Cordova’s first dedicated Bicycle Master Plan, although theCity’s General Plan provided a sound policy framework for bicycle facility development beginning in 2006.This Plan provides information about the current state of bicycle transportation in Rancho Cordova andprovides additional policy direction for the City. The Plan also indicates the level of financial effort andcommunity collaboration necessary to achieve the desired network.SETTINGPLANNING AREAThe City of Rancho Cordova is located within the Highway 50 corridor to the east of the City of Sacramentoand west of the City of Folsom. Mather Field Air Base is located along the southwest boundary of the City,and the Aerojet Rocket Testing Facility is located to the east. The northern boundary of Rancho Cordova isdefined by the American River. At approximately 23 square miles within its borders, the City of RanchoCordova is the third largest incorporated municipality in Sacramento County and is the second largestemployment center in the Sacramento region.
