Antinuclear Antibody TestingApproximately 27% (34% in women and 17% inmen) of the general population have positive ANA.The vast majority are false positives. Don’trecommend testing for patients withstraightforward arthritis or muscle pain. Test ifthere is a strong suspicion of connective tissuedisease, otherwise often raise unnecessary anxietyamongst patients.
Choosing Wisely1. Don’t test ANA sub-serologies without positive ANA2. Don’t test for Lyme disease as a cause formusculoskeletal symptoms without an exposure historyand appropriate examination findings3.
