a letter from<br />
the head of school<br />
<strong>Ruffing</strong> was founded nearly fifty years ago, rising out of the hopes<br />
and dreams of people who believed <strong>Montessori</strong> transformed<br />
education as an aid to life. In 2005, with courage and vision,<br />
<strong>Ruffing</strong> began a necessary building project destined to redefine<br />
and modernize the school’s operations. Throughout, the school<br />
community supported the building program and affirmed a<br />
commitment to a green school philosophy.<br />
Now complete, what has this project meant to our school? Students<br />
and faculty enjoy the reality of spacious and light-filled classrooms<br />
and parents appreciate the security and safety of the building<br />
and assurance of the healthiest possible learning atmosphere.<br />
Significantly, our new building has clarified the school’s identity and<br />
mission for those not already familiar with <strong>Ruffing</strong>.<br />
We can now announce that The Whole School for the Whole Child<br />
Capital Campaign was successfully concluded and its $1,000,000<br />
fundraising goal in gifts and pledges has been met. This historical<br />
achievement represents participation by members of every segment<br />
of the school community, joining together to provide innovative and<br />
forward looking improvements for the school’s future. To honor<br />
these supporters, a permanent plaque naming all who contributed<br />
to the campaign will be mounted inside the school’s main entrance.<br />
Students today and tomorrow are indebted to these philanthropists<br />
who enhanced the dreams of our school’s founders.<br />
We are grateful to all donors for support of the ongoing and<br />
necessary fundraising activities of the school - through <strong>Annual</strong> Fund<br />
gifts, funding of special projects, financial aid contributions, gifts<br />
in kind and fundraising event support. Whether motivated by love<br />
of their own children, gratitude for the school’s impact on former<br />
students or appreciation for <strong>Montessori</strong> today, all donations merit<br />
a sincere thank you: thank you for believing that our students and<br />
families deserve the finest <strong>Montessori</strong> education available in the<br />
best learning environment, and for helping to make it possible.<br />

2007–2008<br />
<strong>Ruffing</strong>’s 2007-08 fiscal year (which ended June 30, 2008) was notable<br />
for the generous voluntary financial support we received from our<br />
families and friends. Led by an unprecedented level of alumni and<br />
parent participation, we achieved $74,210 in annual giving, and $13,172<br />
in restricted gifts. The activities of our illustrious Parent Association<br />
netted approximately $8,000 that was used in support of special<br />
projects around the school. and I am delighted to report that we<br />
successfully met our $1,000,000 capital campaign goal, the largest in<br />
<strong>Ruffing</strong>’s history, for the recent redevelopment project.<br />
Of our $3 million budget, tuition and fees accounted for 82% of<br />
operating revenues, with 12% of enrolled families receiving financial<br />
assistance from <strong>Ruffing</strong>. Excluding the increase in debt service<br />
associated with the redevelopment, total costs were kept to a 3%<br />
increase, indicating impressive fiscal control in a time of rising<br />
inflationary pressures.<br />
Unaccounted for on the income statement, but not unappreciated,<br />
are the countless volunteer hours spent in support of our school.<br />
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank all of those<br />
parents, grandparents, alumni and friends who have donated their<br />
time and skills to <strong>Ruffing</strong> this year. Your commitment is critical to the<br />
success of the school and is one of our greatest assets.<br />
With the redevelopment project now successfully behind us, and<br />
with record enrollment for 2008-09 to inspire us, the Audit/Finance<br />
Committee will turn its attention in the coming year to providing<br />
the strategic financial planning that will ensure <strong>Ruffing</strong> continues to<br />
provide the highest quality <strong>Montessori</strong> education for years to come.<br />

With <strong>Ruffing</strong> thriving in its beautiful new facility, the Board<br />
continued its strategic planning, working throughout the year<br />
to build upon <strong>Ruffing</strong>’s existing Strategic Initiative. This work<br />
culminated in a retreat held in June 2008 during which the<br />
Board identified important areas for future growth, including<br />
strengthening financial reserves and development operations,<br />
enhancing professional development opportunities and support<br />
for faculty and staff, improving both internal and external<br />
communication, and continuing to incorporate environmental<br />
awareness into <strong>Ruffing</strong>’s <strong>Montessori</strong> pedagogy. The Board will be<br />
focusing on these areas in the future.<br />
At the close of the year, the Board recognized outgoing trustees<br />
Mike Shaut and Julie Comber-Martin, and former trustees Bill<br />
Gaskill and Charlotte Newman, “[f]or their steadfast support of<br />
the institution, for their strength, encouragement and guidance<br />

over the years, but most of all, for their commitment to build a<br />
<strong>Montessori</strong> environment that will educate generations to their<br />
fullest potential” by naming them to the newly-created position of<br />
“Honorary Trustee.” Without the dedication and contributions of<br />
people like Mike, Julie, Bill, Charlotte, and countless others, <strong>Ruffing</strong><br />
would not be the successful and dynamic school of choice that it<br />
has become today.<br />
It is an exciting time as <strong>Ruffing</strong> approaches its 50th Anniversary<br />
under the leadership of Board President Trenton Tipton-Fletcher,<br />
Vice-President Mike Barrett, Secretary Jane McGann, and Treasurer<br />

With the generous support of parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, foundations, faculty and staff,<br />
corporations and friends of the school, <strong>Ruffing</strong> <strong>Montessori</strong> School’s Whole School for the Whole Child Capital<br />
Campaign has successfully reached its $1,000,000 goal in gifts and pledges. Recognizing the powerful impact<br />
and long-term potential of the project, the Board authorized a record-setting fundraising effort to undertake the<br />
transforming physical renovation. We are grateful to the 250 donors who envisioned and backed this project,<br />
creating the healthy, green school our students and teachers enjoy. In the years ahead, this project will sustain<br />
and energize the school as a dynamic leader in <strong>Montessori</strong> education.<br />

When Diane B. Connelly, a member of the Board in the early years<br />
of the Fairmount <strong>Montessori</strong> Association, dedicated volunteer and<br />
mother of Karin ’84, Susan ’87 and Heather ’91, died unexpectedly<br />
in January 2008, her family and friends sought to memorialize<br />
her life in a meaningful way. Combining her appreciation for<br />
<strong>Ruffing</strong> and the <strong>Montessori</strong> philosophy with her enthusiastic love<br />
of gardening, Diane’s daughters suggested the Diane B. Connelly<br />
Memorial Garden at <strong>Ruffing</strong>. Located near the All Day Children’s<br />
House, the new garden, established with gifts from family and<br />
friends, invites visitors to stop, rest and enjoy the peaceful spot<br />
that commemorate Diane’s commitment to <strong>Ruffing</strong>.<br />

The 2007-2008 school year was one of tremendous focus and growth<br />
for the Parent Association. The PA Executive Board, along with the<br />
Board of Trustees, the administration and the parent community took a<br />
hard look at how the PA supports and reflects the <strong>Ruffing</strong> community.<br />
After careful consideration of the structure and function of <strong>Ruffing</strong>’s<br />
Parent Association, using a parent survey, staff and faculty input<br />
and a series of public meetings, we made some important changes<br />
to improve the Parent Association and its support for the school<br />
community. These changes include: streamlined communication<br />
pathways, more clearly defined roles for PA officers and class parents,<br />
and the creation of a Vice-President/Volunteer Coordinator position.<br />
With a renewed focus on volunteerism and community building,<br />
the newly structured Parent Association looks forward to another<br />
successful year of bringing parents together in support of <strong>Ruffing</strong>.<br />
However, PA activities for 2007-2008 were not limited to redefinition<br />
and restructuring. The Parent Association was also able to continue<br />
important <strong>Ruffing</strong> traditions such as the Pumpkin Party, the Book Sale,<br />
Grandparents’ and Special Persons’ Day, Great Kids’ Race, and a end-<br />

of-the-year fiesta in appreciation for the faculty and staff. “Green”<br />
was a theme in some creative new events such as Save-the-Shoes and<br />
Save-the-Costumes. The PA introduced a parent education series,<br />
offering evening lectures and discussions on bullying, sexual education<br />
and our unique green curriculum. A poignant panel program exploring<br />
diversity at <strong>Ruffing</strong>, put together by the parent members of the<br />
Diversity Committee, opened a meaningful discussion.<br />
As a result of various special events and fundraisers, the Parent<br />
Association made a significant gift to our faculty on behalf of the<br />
parent community. Parent Association’s funds bought computers and<br />
computer chairs for the faculty lounge, as well as ceramic plates to<br />
be used in lieu of disposable dinnerware at school events. PA efforts<br />
made the 2007-2008 school year more fun for students, offered<br />
parenting support for families and honored both the faculty and the<br />
environment with the results of successful fundraising efforts.<br />

Ways to support ruffing<br />
In addition to the <strong>Annual</strong> Fund, the foundation of philanthropy<br />
in independent schools, you can support <strong>Ruffing</strong> in numerous<br />
meaningful ways that both strengthen the school and provide<br />
you with income tax deductions for your gift.<br />
• The <strong>Annual</strong> Fund provides vital unrestricted operating<br />
support.<br />
• Financial Aid Fund contributions help to attract and retain<br />
able students whose families cannot afford the entire cost<br />
of tuition.<br />
• Special Project Gifts are monetary donations restricted to a<br />
particular purpose, such as a piece of equipment, classroom<br />
project, renovation or enhancement.<br />
