Laser Institute to get
newest technology
The Laser Eye Institute at the University Optometric
Center will soon install the recently FDA-approved
Zyoptix advanced laser eye surgery system. Since 2001,
surgeons in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Canada have
used this personalized laser vision correction technology
designed by Bausch & Lomb.
This system allows the surgeon to create a precise map
of both the inside and outside surfaces of each patient’s
cornea, and using wave-front technology, gives the surgeon
the ability to measure the unique imperfections within
each patient’s optical system.
Results from the clinical trials reveal that after treatment
more than 91 percent of patients have unaided 20/20
vision or better and 70 percent have 20/16 vision. In addition,
40 percent of patients reported having better night
driving vision. Six months after surgery, 99 percent of the
patients who participated in the clinical trials reported
that they were satisfied with the results and said that their
quality of vision had improved. No one was dissatisfied.
“This new laser eye surgery system is an exciting breakthrough
in vision correction. With this wave-front guided
customized laser, we are able to correct aberrations that
have not been corrected with other lasers, providing the
patient with better vision.” said Harry Koster, M.D., a
surgeon in the Laser Eye Institute.
Calling all Canada
and California Alumni
SUNY O students want to hear from you. The California
student organization, COSA, with roughly 50 students,
and the Canadian student organization, CSA, with about
25 members, are two active groups at the College. Both
organizations are very eager to speak with optometrists
practicing in their home areas. If you know you’ll be in the
New York City area and are willing to speak with students
from your home state/country in an informal format, please
email the Alumni Office at mnappi@sunyopt.edu and let
us know. We’ll be more than happy to get you in contact
with the respective organization’s president to set up a
possible meeting.

Dear Fellow Alumni:
It wasn’t that long ago that I saw many of you at Envision New York 2003. What an
enjoyable time that was! I am extremely excited to tell you that Envision 2003 brought
together more than 285 alumni (414 O.D.s in total) from 21 states and three countries.
We even had an alumna fly in from Australia to attend!
Your presence at Envision 2003 made it bigger and better than Envision 2002, and
the largest alumni event in the history of SUNY O. Thank you everyone. And I would
like to especially thank Jerry Rosenstein ‘76 for sponsoring the Alumni Cocktail
Reception on Sunday night. His generosity brought many old friends together and
helped us to recognize the Reunion Year Classes. Members of the Classes of 1973,
1978, 1983, 1988, 1993 and 1998, this year is a milestone for you.
I’d also like to take a moment to congratulate Dr. Haffner as this year’s American
Academy of Optometry’s Life Fellowship winner. Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, President of
AAO called Dr. Haffner a “wonderful and tangible example” of the AAO’s goal to promote
excellence in optometric patient care, education and research. Life Fellowship
winners are highly accomplished in their fields and have attained a level of peer
recognition that has been earned over many years.
Congratulations are also in order for Dr. Harold Solan ‘49. In October, Harold was
inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame. An honor befitting Harold, an
asset to the profession.
Before you turn this page, I’d like to ask one favor. Please complete your address questionnaire
and return it to the Alumni Office as soon as possible. This questionnaire is
important for two reasons. First, as your alma mater, SUNY O takes great pride in its
alumni. The College community enjoys hearing about your successes and we also like
being able to share College and other alumni information with you – through Focal
Point – for example. Secondly, having your business information on file could help the
Alumni Office, patients and other alumni. More than once in the last few months an
alum has called to locate a fellow alum in another area to refer a patient. If we don’t
have your business information on file, we can’t assist the doctor with a referral.

Lenses, Daniella Rutner,
received the Most Promising
Inventor Award from SUNY
Chancellor Robert L. King,
when he honored 54 of
New York’s most prominent
scholars for their breakthrough
research. Daniella
is developing a new visual
feedback system to be used
with children who have eye
movement disorders. Her
research involves children
between the ages of five and
ten who have nystagmus.

Currently, Helen works in

AROUND THE BUILDING
Recipient of England’s
Rank Prize
Barry B. Lee, Ph.D., research
professor at SUNY O, is the
recipient of the Rank Prize, one
of England’s most prestigious
scientific awards. Established
in 1972 by the late Lord Rank
to encourage a greater understanding
of the sciences of
nutrition and optoelectronics,
the Rank Prize was given to
Dr. Lee for his work on new
pathways in the visual system.
Dr. Lee received his Ph.D.
in Physiology from the University
of London. Prior to
joining the faculty at SUNY O
in 2000, he was a researcher
at the Max Planck Institute
for Biophysical Chemistry in
Gottingen, Germany. He is
well-known internationally as
an author and lecturer in the
area of neuroscience.
SUNY Development Office
Receives Honors
At the SUNY/CUAD (State
University of New York Council
for University Affairs and
Development) annual meeting
this summer, Ann Warwick,
Vice President for Institutional
Advancement, was inducted
into the SUNY/CUAD Hall of
Fame for her years of dedication
and service to the SUNY
system, especially SUNY O. The
Development Office received
Best of Category recognition
for its “We Are Eye Care”
Electronic Communications
campaign and Institutional
Relations Publication. In the
Total Advertising Programs
Category, “We Are Eye Care”
received a Judges’ Citation. The
“Think About It – Optometry”
Student Recruitment Publication

SUNY O Study
The College has received a oneyear
grant from the National
Association of Student Financial
Aid Administrators
(NASFAA) to develop a pilot
survey to assess the effects of
financial factors on career
choices for students in the
health professions. The goal of
the project is to create an integrated

Class Gifts
The Class of 1991 Pacesetter Award
Just months after the Class of 1991 graduated, Michael Siegel,
‘91 Class President, empowered the OCNY to institute the
“Class of 1991 Pacesetter Award.” Since that time, roughly a
dozen students have been honored at graduation with a plaque
inscripted - “Class of 1991 Pacesetter Award for Excellence in
Primary Care. (Name of Recipient) Sponsored by the Class of 1991.”
Please continue your support of this award so that another dozen
students can be helped. In addition to the plaque the graduate
receives, the Alumni Office would like to add a monetary
component as well.

The Class of 2002 Scholarship
The Class of 2002 Scholarship will be given annually to a fourth
year student in the professional program who is in good academic
standing, in financial need and has served in a student council
position anytime during the professional program. The scholarship
will begin with a gift of $300 and increase with future
donations from the Class of 2002.
If you would like to make a donation to the Class of 2002
Scholarship, please make your check out to OCNY, include
Class of 2002 Scholarship in the memo portion of the check.

The Alumni Office has mailed
a questionnaire to all alumni,
including residents, graduate
program alumni and fellows,
for data to be included in the
new Online Directory. We
hope to have the Directory
up and running in December.
Please return the questionnaires
before December 1,
2003 so we can stay on target.
