Letter from the Board President and Executive Director/CEO
We are pleased to share this report of the accomplishments of
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History during fiscal year
2010-2011. As we celebrate our recent successes, we reflect on
the vital role that this institution has played in our community, educating
people of all ages about the wonders of natural history and the joy of
scientific discovery.
In December, our yearlong celebration marking the Museum’s 90th
anniversary culminated in a very special occasion. A Founders’ Celebration
honored the Museum’s 26 visionary founders and welcomed more than
35 of their descendants, some of whom came from as far as California to
attend this memorable event.
The spirit of the Arkites, a
group of men in the 1830s
whose passion for the natural
world filled a small wooden
building on Public Square
with Cleveland’s first natural
history collections, inspired
the founding of the Museum
in 1920. While the humble
two-room “Ark” sparked the
Museum’s mission to conserve
our past, the PNC SmartHome Cleveland built on Museum grounds in
spring 2011 was a bold statement demonstrating our commitment to
the future. This innovative project showcased the possibilities of energyefficient
living. It received national and international attention, ignited
imaginations and accelerated interest community-wide in the local green
building industry.
The Museum’s financial integrity remained solid. For more than three
decades, this institution has balanced its operating budget. We are
especially grateful for the generosity of our donors and supporters who
propelled our Annual Fund campaign past the $1 million mark. These
general operating funds underwrite many vital facets of the Museum.
Physical improvements in the past year included the renovation of Kahn
Hall, our dedicated special exhibition space. In order to improve energy
efficiency and create a stable, climate–controlled environment, we replaced
the roof, installed a vapor barrier and upgraded the heating, cooling and
humidification systems. In addition, we replaced the roof over the Kirtland
Hall of Prehistoric Life. These improvements all meet museum criteria for
LEED certification.
During the year, our renowned
scientific staff conducted a
dynamic program of cuttingedge
research and exploration.
From the discovery of a
103-million-year-old horned
dinosaur in Asia to new findings
in prehistoric settlements,
rivers, streams and natural
areas here in Ohio, the impact
of their research is far-reaching
and important.
Within our galleries, inside local classrooms and from our distance
learning studios that connect to students around the world, Museum
educators are engaging schoolchildren and sparking a deeper
understanding of health, science and nature. This year, we reached more
than 71,000 schoolchildren.
Finally, the Board Development Committee conducted a feasibility study
that set the stage for a fundraising campaign for the planned Museum
renovation/expansion project. With this exciting vision for the future, the
Museum will pioneer new ground in science education, in a world very
different than the one our founders confronted more than 90 years ago.
We thank the Board of Trustees, our dedicated staff and our generous
and loyal donors. Your support has allowed us to continue the important
work of preserving our past, inspiring exploration and learning today, and
leading the way toward a vibrant and sustainable future.

Visitor Experience
This year, The Cleveland Museum
of Natural History reflected on
a successful past and offered a
glimpse of a sustainable future. In the
midst of celebrating our 90th anniversary
and honoring the Museum’s visionary
founders, we also laid the groundwork—
literally—for a home that represents the
future of sustainability.
The Museum presented seven special
exhibitions during fiscal year 2010-2011,
designed to appeal to visitors of all ages.
The monumental creatures of prehistoric
eras filled Kahn Hall and awed 145,046
visitors during Extreme Mammals: The
Biggest, Smallest and Most Amazing
Mammals of All Time. Together with their
families, children explored the science of
healthy living in Disease Detectives and
Let’s Get Active and donned hard hats for
the hands-on Little Builders. The opening
of PNC SmartHome Cleveland offered
something new to visitors, featuring
a guided tour of the energy-efficient
house. A Dynamic Climate permanent
exhibition was installed that examines
the Earth’s climate and the challenge of
climate change. Soldiers, Sailors and Stones
highlighted the efforts of Museum curators
to help restore the historic Soldiers’
and Sailors’ Monument on Cleveland’s
Public Square.
More than 41,000 visitors experienced
the stunning Leonard Krieger Visual
Effects System in the Nathan and Fannye
Shafran Planetarium. In December, two
sold-out winter solstice concerts featuring
live performances by the Almeda Trio
showcased the state-of-the-art technology
to a new audience.
The Perkins Wildlife Center and Woods
Garden continued to be a popular draw
for visitors. New animal acquisitions,
including a Peregrine Falcon, Barn
Owl and opossums, were exhibited in
the outdoor wildlife center and used in
educational outreach programs. Special
family friendly events such as the Owls
& Howls Children’s Halloween Party in
October and Groundhog Fun Day in
February continued to be successful, each
attracting more than 1,000 visitors.
The Museum continued to increase
engagement of visitors and new audiences
online, offering behind-the-scenes videos
of Extreme Mammals exhibit construction
and special “Creature Feature” videos
featuring Wildlife Resources staff. Online
audiences for social media sites like
Facebook and Twitter grew to include
thousands of people from across the region
and the world.
Building improvements included extensive
work on Kahn Hall that will significantly
improve climate control required for
special exhibitions and enhance visitor
comfort. A new bike rack outside the
Museum’s front entrance encourages
sustainable transportation while ensuring
safe and secure storage for bicycles. In
our Blue Planet Café, we took steps to
reduce the amount of waste and offer easy
ways to recycle—just one example of how
the Museum strives to lead by education
and example.

BY THE NUMBERS
Museum attendance increased again
this year as the Museum welcomed
285,000 visitors.
Approximately 75 percent of these
visitors met the native Ohio animals
of the Perkins Wildlife Center and
Woods Garden.
145,046 visitors toured the Extreme
Mammals exhibition.
59,122 visitors and young explorers
took advantage of the “please
touch” opportunities in the Smead
Discovery Center.
The Nathan and Fannye Shafran
Planetarium introduced 41,407
visitors to the wonders of our
Universe through public programs.
The Museum engaged the community
through free attendance days such as
Discovery Day and Holiday CircleFest,
reaching 10,397 people.
1,100 visitors participated in
Groundhog Fun Day.
1,300 people attended the
not-so-scary Owls & Howls Children’s
Halloween Party.
The Museum increased its online
presence through social media,
with more than 700,000 views
on Facebook.
The Museum’s Annual Fund exceeded
its $1 million goal for the first time in
the Museum’s history.

Science
Looking back is an important part of
moving forward. The research of the
Museum’s renowned curators and
scientists sheds light on the past and
preserves our history. It also opens doors
that inform our actions to impact
the future.
Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology
Dr. Michael Ryan was among a
group of scientists that analyzed
fossil evidence found in South
Korea and published research
describing a new horned dinosaur.
The newly identified genus,
Koreaceratops hwaseongensis,
lived about 103 million years
ago during the late Early
Cretaceous period. Vertebrate
Paleontology staff and volunteers
conducted preparation work on an
80-million-year-old partial skeleton
of a hadrosaur, a duck-billed dinosaur,
previously collected from southern Alberta
by members of Ryan’s Southern Alberta
Dinosaur Project.
“Kadanuumuu,” the 3.6-million-year-old
hominid discovery announced last year
by Curator of Physical Anthropology
Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie, was named one
of the “Top 10 Discoveries” in Archaeology
Magazine’s January/February 2011 issue.
During this season’s field research in Ethiopia,
Haile-Selassie recovered important early
hominid fossil remains that are currently
under study for publication. Over the year,
the department’s scientifically significant
Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection was
studied by 256 researchers from around
the world. Commerical utilization of this
acclaimed collection continued to generate
income for the Museum.
A third season of excavations at the
Heckleman site, a prehistoric settlement
located in Erie County, Ohio, was directed by
Curator of Archaeology Dr. Brian Redmond.
Fieldwork explored the oval-shaped enclosure
discovered in 2008, exposing numerous
storage and cooking pits ranging from 2,300
to 1,400 years old. Redmond also coauthored
an article on the earliest evidence
for the use of cotton fiber in eastern North
America. The fibers were preserved in the
dental calculus of individuals buried at the
Danbury site, a Native American settlement
located on Sandusky Bay.
Curator of Archaeology Dr. Nomi
Greber collaborated on research to formulate
a typology of ground plans of extremely
large Hopewell earthworks in the Mid-Ohio
Valley that enclose 10 or more acres. The
project categorized 49 sites into two classes
determined by shape.
Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology
Dr. Joe Hannibal was lead author on a paper
on the early industrial geology of western
Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, reviewing
early methods of iron production and slag
formation, as well as use of various types of
stone for millstones. During the year, the
Invertebrate Paleontology Department’s
catalogued collection surpassed 18,000
lots of specimens—more than 60,000
individual specimens.

Research co-authored by Curator of
Ornithology Dr. Andy Jones analyzed
bird-window collisions on Cleveland State
University’s campus. Jones also led a bird
survey to Cuba in February for 10 skilled field
observers. Overall, the group recorded nearly
160 species. Department volunteers reached
a milestone when they entered the 25,000 th
bird specimen into the ornithology collection
database. There are approximately 30,000
study skins in the collection.
Curator of Mineralogy Dr. David Saja
collaborated with the Cleveland Museum of
Art to identify gemstones in reliquaries and
the mineral composition of stone sculptures,
as well as advised on minerals used in
historical pigments. This partnership yielded a
lecture for its Museum Ambassadors program
and a teacher workshop for our Science
Resource Center.
Following a two-year population
study, Curator of Vertebrate Zoology
Dr. Tim Matson completed a three-year
ecological study to monitor the movements
of the Common Mudpuppy in the Grand and
Ashtabula rivers. Both projects measure the
effects of lampricides upon the Mudpuppy.
Staff continued to monitor and collect data
on populations of amphibians in Northeast
Ohio and collect inventory data on fish,
amphibians, reptiles and crayfish in the
Ashtabula River.
Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Zoology
Thomas Pucci oversaw a reorganization of
the department’s wet specimen collection
that consolidated important specimens for
easier access. The Museum’s high-powered
dissecting microscopes were enhanced with
advanced imaging capabilities and image
management software. Department volunteers
documented more than 108,000 records for
the Ohio Lepidopterists’ Long-term Butterfly
Monitoring Program.
The Botany Department and Natural Areas
Division, led by Curator Dr. Jim Bissell,
surveyed 47 parcels of land in Ohio and
Pennsylvania, totaling more than 5,000 acres,
under the Conservation Outreach Program.
More than 50 new rare plant and animal
records were discovered. In March, the Botany
Department, The Nature Conservancy and
the Ohio Division of Wildlife hosted the 2011
Botanical Symposium in Columbus, Ohio.
After 31 years of service, Dr. Shya Chitaley,
Curator of Paleobotany, announced her
retirement in January. Under her leadership,
the paleobotany collection grew to nearly
30,000 specimens. Chitaley was appointed
the honorary title of Curator Emerita.
Vertebrate Paleontology Archaeology Ornithology Vertebrate Zoology
In December, the 57th issue of the Museum’s
scientific publication, Kirtlandia, was
distributed to 200 scientific institutions
around the world.
The Archives Department conducted research
to identify descendants of the Museum’s
founding families. Archivist and Museum
Trustee Evie Newell led the project. She
located 1,126 individuals who were invited
to a special Founders’ Celebration. The family
tree created through the project connected
descendants to their legacy and will build
relationships into the future.

The Museum’s milestone 90th year was
a record-setting one for educational
programming, both within the
Museum and through outreach efforts.
In our camps, classes, distance learning
and gallery programs, talented Museum
educators continued to awaken enthusiasm
for science and the natural world among
our school-age and adult visitors.
Education
Junior Medical Camp and Circle Sampler
Camp during the summer, as well as spring
break and holiday break camps, offered
exciting learning experiences for children.
To accommodate increased demand, an
eighth week of Junior Medical Camp was
added, and these camps sold out over the
fiscal year.
Almost one-third of the Museum’s
education classes featured live animals.
Live animal programs are also a popular
part of the Museum’s visitor experience,
with 17,907 people attending these
programs in 2010-2011.
Museum educators are committed to
offering programs for visitors of all ages.
The Explorer Series presented 10 lectures
with an average attendance of 300 people.
The January program featuring famed
paleontologist Dr. John R. “Jack” Horner
was a sold-out event with more than 500
attendees. The Frontiers of Astronomy
lecture series, presented annually in
conjunction with Case Western Reserve
University, offered the opportunity for
visitors to explore the outer reaches of
the Universe.
A vital part of the Museum’s educational
mission is fostering science instruction
skills among teachers. The Science
Resource Center celebrated its 25th year
of serving the teaching community,
with more than 500 educator member
visits to the Center, resulting in 2,131
individual items loaned out to enhance
classroom learning.
The Museum’s educational reach does
not stop at our doors—or outside our
regional boundaries. For the second time,
the Museum’s distance learning program
was awarded a 2010-2011 CILC Pinnacle
Award from the Center for Interactive
Learning and Collaboration, in recognition
of our outstanding K-12 standards-based
interactive videoconferencing programs.
Berrien Regional Education Service
Agency named our distance learning
programs a “Teachers’ Favorite” for the
third year in a row.

The Museum educated 71,323
schoolchildren through its gallery,
classroom, outreach and distance
learning programs. This included 12,128
students in 26 states and 4 countries
through distance learning programs,
13,165 schoolchildren through the Nathan
and Fannye Shafran Planetarium and
1,464 participants through homeschool
programs.
The Science Resource Center celebrated
25 years of serving area teachers.
The Science Resource Center loaned
2,131 individual teaching tools to
enhance learning in regional classrooms.
307 children received hands-on
experience during the Museum’s popular
summer camps.
More than 50,000 people participated
in programming through the Wildlife
Resources Division.

Maintaining a healthy community
is a vital part of a successful
future. In 2010-2011, the Museum
remained committed to providing
community access to health education for
families, individuals and local businesses
through its human health programs.
Working closely with other community
agencies and organizations, the Museum
continued to offer wellness programming
for the public, local businesses and
health professionals.
A Thriving Communities Grant from the
Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio
supports the Health Literacy Partnership
for Greater Cleveland, a collaboration
of the Museum and the Cleveland
Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of
Case Western Reserve University. The
grant provided funds for a family health
booklet and new models for the health
education classroom. These materials
are used in health sessions taught by
medical students and are free to Museum
visitors of all ages, allowing greater access
to health information for families with
young children.
Health
In November 2010, the Museum organized
a conference in partnership with the
Cuyahoga County Board of Health and
the Cleveland Department of Public
Health titled “Bed Bugs: A New Approach
to an Old Problem.” More than 350
professionals attended and the event
received national and local news coverage.
In March 2011, the Museum promoted
community engagement with healthy
living topics at the Let’s Get Active Health
Fair, which featured free health screenings
and information about the importance
of healthy activity. Dr. Linda Spurlock,
Director of Human Health, educated
attendees about preventing traumatic
brain injury, including the importance
of helmets and protective gear in sports
and recreation.
The third annual Wellness@Work
Awards were held at the InterContinental
Hotel and Conference Center in March,
honoring 15 northern Ohio businesses
that demonstrated outstanding workplace
wellness and sustainability programs. In
June, the Wellness@WorkSymposium
featured experts in workplace wellness
sharing best practices with other local
business leaders. This year’s symposium
achieved a new attendance record with
140 participants.

Sustainability
The future came to Northeast Ohio
this spring when we built PNC
SmartHome Cleveland on Museum
grounds. This bold project showcased how
beautiful and effortless energy-efficient
living can be. In June, we set out the
welcome mat and invited the community
to tour this innovative home.
The custom two-story home was
built as a temporary exhibition that
would ultimately become a permanent
home. Constructed to achieve passive
house certification, the world’s most
advanced standard of residential energy
performance, it was fabricated using a
super-insulated wall system and energyefficient,
triple-pane windows. Designed
without a conventional furnace, the
home uses 90 percent less heating and
cooling energy than a typical home.
PNC SmartHome Cleveland welcomed
more than 9,600 visitors during its
four-month open house. It was later
moved to a permanent location and
placed for sale as a residential home and
neighborhood asset.
David Beach, Director of the Museum’s
GreenCityBlueLake Institute, was
instrumental in bringing the vision to
fruition. Unprecedented support from
major funders and partners among the
Northeast Ohio community made the
green dream home a reality. While PNC
SmartHome Cleveland made national and
international headlines, its true success is
measured in the impact it had locally. The
project was a catalyst and an inspirational
blueprint for the future of green building
and neighborhood redevelopment in
the region.
The GreenCityBlueLake Institute web
site, www.gcbl.org, remained the best
source of information about sustainability
projects and events in the region. The
site also became the virtual hub for the
Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Initiative and
its related projects.
The Institute’s staff continued to make
strides in the areas of education and
advocacy for sustainable transportation.
Notable victories included leading
a community effort that secured a
$6 million commitment from the Ohio
Department of Transportation to improve
bicycle connections between downtown
Cleveland and the Tremont neighborhood.

Conservation:
Natural Areas
Preserving rare plants and animals
today ensures that future generations
can appreciate these wonders of
nature. The Botany Department and
Natural Areas Division staff works to
conserve regional biodiversity across more
than 5,000 acres in northern Ohio and
northwestern Pennsylvania.
During 2010-2011, several exciting
new rare plant and animal species were
discovered on Museum nature preserves.
At Singer Lake bog, the first Summit
County occurrence of bushy aster was
uncovered. The first Ashtabula County
record of lance-leaved violet was found at
West Geneva Swamp. In addition, two antlike
litter beetles—new to science—were
discovered within East Geneva Swamp.
Stewardship efforts restored rare Oak
Savannah habitats at Singer Lake. Many
new species to the basin emerged in
response to restoration of the openings
and controlled burns on the sandy
uplands. Stewardship at the North
Kingsville Sand Barrens enlarged the
population of the state-endangered
Common’s panic grass within the preserve.
This species has not been observed in
Ohio during the last 20 years.
Successfully advocating to protect fragile
habitats, staff secured a Joint Ventures
grant of $62,000 from the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service toward the purchase of
the 50-acre Campbell tract in East Geneva
Swamp. For its next round of funding,
District 8 Clean Ohio scored two Museum
projects—purchase of the 30-acre Shrake
Bog in Summit County and purchase of
a 10-acre parcel within Singer Lake—
higher than any other project submitted.
In addition, the Museum was awarded
a Sustain Our Great Lakes grant of
$85,000 for stewardship at West and East
Geneva swamps.
The Museum received a gift of land
within the Singer Lake basin that holds
the largest leatherleaf bog known in
Ohio. In addition, an estate gift granted
the Museum a 20-acre parcel within the
northern edge of the Singer Lake basin.
In September, more than 200 people
attended the seventh-annual Conservation
Symposium, themed Urban Ecology:
Nature in the City. The symposium
featured a screening of the documentary
“Tapped” at the Capitol Theatre that was
attended by 250 moviegoers.

The popular Natural Areas Wine Tours
introduced visitors to the natural world
through hikes to Museum nature preserves
coupled with visits to local wineries. More
than 100 participants enjoyed this unique
opportunity to explore Northern Ohio’s
wild beauty.
Sixty Museum members participated in
the fourth-annual Native Plant Sale. They
purchased 329 native plants and trees for
their yards. Gardening with native plants
promotes biodiversity by providing food
and shelter for butterflies, insects, birds
and other animals.

Society was renamed for Marie
Odenkirk Clark. Mrs. Clark,
a former Board of Trustees

PRofESSioNAL HoNoRS AND AWARDS
Martin Calabrese was elected to serve a two-year term on the
Board of Directors for Cleveland Regional Council of Science
Teachers.
Shya Chitaley retired in January of 2011 as Curator of
Paleobotany and Head of the Paleobotany Department. She has
been named Curator Emerita. The Paleobotanical Section of
the Botanical Society of America presented Dr. Chitaley with
a plaque in recognition of her contributions to paleobotany,
service and outstanding scholarship. The 2010 issue of the Indian
botanical journal, The Botanique, published a tribute to Dr.
Chitaley, describing her career in paleobotany. Dr. Chitaley was
the founding editor of this journal. The April 2011 issue of The
Botanique was a Festschrift (felicitation volume) in honor of Dr.
Chitaley. It contained a number of technical papers as well as
articles about, and materials related to Dr. Chitaley and her career
in paleobotany.
Andy Jones, Curator of Ornithology, is an Elective Member,
American Ornithologists’ Union.
Brian Redmond, Curator of Archaeology, received the Jared
Potter Kirtland award for outstanding professional achievement in
the field of natural science on September 14, 2010.
David Saja, Curator of Mineralogy, was recognized as a Mentor
