From the President of the Board 

Four years ago we started working 

on a vision to reinvent this 

institution. It’s an endeavor 

that will put us in the forefront of 

natural science museums worldwide. 

In last year’s annual report, I described 

the Museum’s vision. It begins by linking 

all of us to the very distant past, starting 

with the Big Bang about 15 billion years 

ago and takes us through the formation 

of Earth and the emergence of the 

incredible diversity of life, including 

humankind. It traces the rise of Homo 

sapiens during the last 10,000 years, 

addressing the discoveries of recent 

decades in biology, astrophysics, physical 

anthropology and other disciplines 

that have given us a much better 

understanding of our collective past. 

It is, to quote author Bill Bryson, 

the “story of everything.” 

In addition to providing a new 

contextual framework for these natural 

history lessons, the Museum will focus 

its exhibits and programming on the 

most pressing issues of the 21st century. 

Th ese have arisen from the rapid 

industrialization of our societies and 

population growth worldwide. We will

provide timely, reliable information about 

the challenges of global climate change, 

loss of natural habitats, the depletion of 

resources and decline of biodiversity, as 

well as present emerging opportunities 

and solutions for improving sustainability 

in Northeast Ohio and beyond. 

I am pleased to report that during 

the last year, the Museum took major 

steps on the journey toward realizing 

this vision. Over the past 12 months, 

architectural plans have been developed 

with the objective of turning the 

Museum’s 50-plus-year-old facility into 

an energy effi cient, LEED Platinum 

building with a dramatic new presence 

on Wade Oval. Th e plans include such 

enhanced visitor amenities as a new lobby, 

café, store and covered parking facility. 

While these changes are much-needed 

and will be highly visible, the most 

dramatic changes are envisioned for the 

Museum’s exhibits. In November 2007, 

we announced the selection of 

Christopher Chadbourne & Associates 

of Boston to create a master plan for 

exhibits. Th e fi rm initiated the interpretive 

master planning process soon thereafter. 

Th ese exhibits will link the story of our 

origins (and traditional natural history) 

to today’s world and the challenges, 

opportunities and risks that we presently 

face. Th e work with Chadbourne & 

Associates on the Museum’s planned 

exhibits and interpretive messages will 

continue in 2009. It will result in a 

natural history museum that is as much 

about the future as it is about the past. 

One of the central themes of natural 

history is “change through time.” At 

the Museum, we experienced our own 

change when Dr. Bruce Latimer (pictured 

at right) announced his retirement, 

eff ective August 28, 2008, after serving 

eight years as executive director. 

During Dr. Latimer’s tenure, the 

Museum achieved a great deal, and I 

personally would like to thank him for his 

leadership. His accomplishments are listed 

on page 6 of this report. He will be missed 

in his day-to-day role. We are pleased 

that he will continue his association with 

the Museum through his research as an 

adjunct curator of physical anthropology. 

Th e Museum is fortunate to have 

the fi nancial resources to support its 

programs and staff with the energy 

and dedication required to reinvent 

the institution for today’s audience. 

It achieved its 30th consecutive year 

of a balanced budget with the support 

of $945,000 in annual gifts from its 

friends and benefactors. In addition, 

we received a general operating grant of 

$620,000 through the Cuyahoga Arts 

and Culture initiative in fi scal 2008. 

In total, gifts and grants made to the 

Museum were in excess of $5 million. 

We are grateful for the exceptional 

support of so many who believe in 

our mission. Th e Museum’s staff and 

board of trustees are working diligently 

to be worthy of your continued trust 

and investment in the years ahead.

From the Director’s Offi ce 

It has been another amazing, eventful year at 

Th e Cleveland Museum of Natural History. 

We added a new Triceratops to our permanent 

exhibits and featured 13 temporary 

exhibitions, including Humans: A Field Guide, 

the fi rst in a series that explores the connection 

between human health and natural history. 

Th ese attracted 263,156 visitors. 

We continued to off er educational programming 

that helped people of all ages learn about 

the natural world and human health. Th ese 

reached in excess of 93,000 people. 

Th e Museum took active roles in several professional 

conferences. Botany Department staff 

coordinated — and Museum curators participated 

in — the 2007 Natural Areas Conference, the 

Natural Areas Association’s national conference, 

held October 9 through 12. Th is was the fi rst time 

this event was held in Cleveland. In April 2008, 

the Museum was a sponsor of the North-Central 

Section meeting of the Geological Society of 

America, held in Evansville, Indiana. Invertebrate 

and Vertebrate Paleontology staff members participated 

in this conference in a number of ways, 

including helping to organize two sessions. 

Among the notable Museum events this fi scal 

year was a benefi t party that was hosted by the 

Museum’s Women’s Committee on November 

10, 2007. It honored Museum staff member and 

sculptor Larry Isard and the retrospective exhibition 

that celebrated his career and accomplishments, 

Animal Expressions: Bronzes by Larry Isard. 


In December and January, two events took 

place at the Museum in collaboration with the 

Cleveland Institute of Music. Th e fi rst, “Natural 

Melodies: Creating a Noteworthy Arrangement,” 

featured the debut of original compositions by 

CIM students inspired by the collections and 

exhibits in the Museum’s seven galleries. Th e 

second, “Notes from Nature: A Concert for the 

Natural Areas,” was presented by the Natural 

Areas Division to benefi t the protection and stewardship 

of the Museum’s nature preserves. CIM 

faculty member Dr. Lisa Rainsong composed the 

six pieces on the program, many inspired by visits 

to various Museum preserves. 

In February, we celebrated the Museum’s 

merger with the former EcoCity Cleveland with 

“Emerge: A Celebration.” Th e well-attended 

party provided an opportunity to introduce 

GreenCityBlueLake Institute as the formal name 

for this center for regional sustainability. 

We were saddened by the loss of former 

Director of Exhibits Ellen Walters. Ellen worked 

here an astonishing 45 years and was the creative 

force behind most of the exhibits on display in 

our galleries today. Few individuals have had the 

impact on this institution that she did. 

Prominent among this year’s events was the 

announcement of the retirement of Executive 

Director Dr. Bruce Latimer. Th roughout his 

tenure, Bruce worked to make his vision of a 

new kind of natural history museum a reality. 

He wanted this institution to excel at its work of 

education, research, conservation and sustainability. 

His achievements and the friends he made for 

the Museum in our community are numerous. 

I was asked by the Museum’s board of trustees 

to serve as interim executive director while a 

search committee undertakes the work of fi nding 

the right person to fi ll the position permanently. 

It’s an honor to ensure that all of the Museum’s 

exciting programs, renovation plans and research 

continue as seamlessly as possible. 

I want to thank you for your continued support 

throughout the year. I encourage you to 

read on in this report to learn more about our 

Museum’s many accomplishments.

Reimagining education 

The Museum has long prided itself 

on providing high-quality science 

education programs. Th e unique 

learning opportunities we off er emphasize 

hands-on experiences with actual 

specimens. Th is fi scal year, we reached 

50,012 students with hands-on workshops, 

gallery, health, planetarium and live animal 

programs and self-conducted visits at the 

Museum. We also served 34,177 young 

people with our two outreach programs, 

Reinberger Science-to-Go! TM and Health 

on Wheels, which take science and health 

classes into area schools. 

But the requirements of education are 

ever-changing, and the need to keep pace 

with technology ever-present. Th at’s why, 

last September, the Museum opened two 

distance learning studios. 

Distance learning is part of the broad 

fi eld of educational technology, which 

encompasses everything from Webbased 

schools to interactive whiteboards. 

Th e Museum off ers interactive 

videoconferencing that allows our 

instructors to interact in real time with 

students in classes across the country and 

around the world. 


And though it might seem to be a 

departure from the hands-on learning 

model, it’s not. Quality distance learning 

programs strive to engage participants as 

much as possible. On-camera props and 

visual aids are necessities. For some classes, 

a kit is mailed to a classroom ahead of 

time so that its contents can be handed 

around during the presentation. And 

instructors frequently include activities 

that encourage students to interact 

with each other in their classroom. 

From September 2007 through the end 

of the fi scal year, 7,569 people participated 

in Museum distance learning programs. 

Th ere were 22 health and two natural 

history topics available. 

Th e Nathan and Fannye Shafran 

Planetarium continued to be a versatile 

educational tool as well. Th is facility 

helps people of all ages understand basic 

astronomy concepts. Th is year, sky shows 

educated 51,113 schoolchildren and 

Museum visitors about the universe. 

We continued to support the work 

of science teachers throughout the 

region by off ering materials for loan, 

workshops and other continuing 

education opportunities in the Science 

Resource Center. More than 550 

teachers borrowed approximately 2,740 

items from the SRC this fi scal year. 

Th e Smead Discovery Center, the 

Museum’s hands-on learning center, 

served more than 55,000 visitors. Of 

those, more than 6,000 attended the 22 

public education programs and special 

activities created and administered 

by SDC staff and volunteers, all of 

them free with Museum admission. 

Live animal programs at the Museum 

and in schools continued to help build 

appreciation for native Ohio wildlife 

among students and visitors alike. Th is 

fi scal year, 495 programs presented by 

Wildlife and Education staff ers reached 

a combined audience of 54,540 people. 

Th is was the third year for Wild 

About the City, which brings the 

Museum’s live animal programs into 

Cleveland Metropolitan Schools 

through the support of Th e Kenneth 

A. Scott Charitable Trust. Th is year, 

this initiative reached more than 

4,000 students in over 20 schools. 

For three years, the Alcoa Foundation has provided 

generous support for students of the Cleveland 

Metropolitan School District to experience the educational 

benefi ts of the Museum. More than 10,600 students have 

benefi ted from the company’s generosity.

Revitalizing the visitor experience 

The Museum strives to provide 

every visitor with a memorable, 

worthwhile experience. Many 

elements come together to make that 

happen, from our staff to our exhibits to 

the amenities we provide. 

Th rough its exhibitions, the Museum 

seeks to connect the past to the present 

and provide insights into the potential 

future of our planet. Th is fi scal year, we 

continued to off er new and innovative 

exhibitions to our visitors. 

On December 18, 2007, a full-size 

replica of one of the country’s fi nest and 

most famous Triceratops mounts went on 

display in the Museum’s Kirtland Hall of 

Prehistoric Life. Th e original mount is a 

composite of four fossil specimens found 

in Wyoming and Montana in 1909 by 

George Sternberg, Barnum Brown and Peter 

Kaisen. Triceratops was one of the largest 

dinosaurs of its time, second only in size to 

its archenemy, Tyrannosaurus rex. 

In addition to this major addition to our 

permanent galleries, the Museum featured 13 

temporary exhibitions that addressed a range 

of scientifi c subjects. Among these were: 

• Animal Secrets, which harnessed 

children’s natural curiosity and love of 

play to help them understand the lives and 

habitats of forest animals. 

• Animal Expressions: Bronzes of 

Larry Isard, a retrospective exhibition 

celebrating the work of sculptor, Museum 

taxidermist and retired assistant director 

Larry Isard. 

• Vibrancy of Tradition: Folk Art 

of Oaxaca, Mexico, researched by 

Acting Assistant Curator of Cultural 

Anthropology Adriann Balok and intern 

Christine Salsgiver, which highlighted a 

selection of items from the Oaxacan folk 

art collection of William and Evelyn Ward. 

• Humans: A Field Guide, which delved 

into the physical traits that make our 

species so distinctive. 

• Th e Canary Project: Landscape of 

Climate Change, an exhibition of 

photographs by New York-based artist 

Susannah Sayler that portray a warming 

global climate. 

• Nesting: Photographs by Judith 

McMillan, black-and-white images 

exploring birds’ nests as architecture 

by Museum trustee and artist Judith 

McMillan. 

• Toad-ily Frogs, which highlighted the 

natural history of amphibians and the 

threat of extinction they face. 

• Two installments in the ongoing 

Fieldwork exhibition series highlighted 

Museum research. Th e fi rst focused on 

Curator of Physical Anthropology Dr. 

Yohannes Haile-Selassie’s paleo anthropological 

work at the Woranso-Mille 

project in Ethiopia. Th e second showcased 

Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology 

Dr. Michael Ryan’s paleontological 

expeditions in Canada and Mongolia and 

fi eld projects excavating Devonian Period 

fossils in Northeast Ohio. 

Th e Museum’s outdoor gallery, the Ralph 

Perkins II Wildlife Center & Woods Garden, 

continued to be a principal attraction, 

drawing visitors outside to see the live animal 

exhibits and native plants. 

A major change to this area was the 

completion of an expanded and refurbished 

enclosure for our two bobcats. On June 5, 

2008, a 20-foot-high, 30-by-60-foot space 

debuted that was designed to resemble the 

cats’ natural habitat, with trees, shrubs, poles 

and perches. Th e enclosure was made possible 

by a gift from Museum trustee Anne Jones. 

Th e area will allow Wildlife Resources staff 

to add enrichment activities that encourage 

the animals to use their natural climbing and 

leaping abilities. Th ese activities are part of 

the comprehensive enrichment program for 

all of the animals designed and implemented 

by Wildlife Resources Division staff . 

Longtime trustee and 

contributor Bill O’Neill 

wanted to invest in the 

Museum’s future capacity to 

draw visitors. So he helped 

orchestrate a grant from the 

William J. and Dorothy K. 

O’Neill Foundation for the 

purchase of a cast of one of 

the country’s fi nest and most 

famous Triceratops mounts.

Redesigning our communities 

Near the end of the last fi scal year, 

we announced that EcoCity 

Cleveland was merging with the 

Museum. Th is fi scal year, we fi nalized that 

arrangement, bringing EcoCity’s work on 

behalf of sustainability and the design of 

cities in balance with nature fully under the 

Museum’s aegis. 

As part of the Museum, EcoCity 

initially operated as the Center for Regional 

Sustainability. Its staff continued to 

work out of offi ce space at the Cleveland 

Environmental Center. 

In February 2008, we unveiled the center’s 

permanent name, GreenCityBlueLake 

Institute, at “Emerge: A Celebration.” Th is 

party to benefi t the institute’s work was 

sponsored by Ohio’s Tomorrow. Th e new 

name capitalizes on EcoCity’s work of the 

past 15 years to create a center of thought 

and practice about sustainability and smart 

growth, with the goal of creating green 

communities on a healthy Lake Erie. 

Th e next month, the institute launched 

a major initiative: a climate change project 

intended to develop a plan to help the 

region reduce its carbon footprint and 

make the Museum a hub of climate 


information and education. Over the next 

two years, the project, funded by Th e 

Cleveland Foundation, Th e George Gund 

Foundation and Museum trustee Nelson 

Talbott, will analyze the greenhouse gas 

emissions of Northeast Ohio and then 

devise transition strategies to reduce 

emissions in key sectors, such as power 

generation, buildings and transportation. 

Finally, it will provide information to 

help cities, businesses and other large 

organizations in the region take action to 

reduce their carbon footprints. Two staff 

members were hired as project managers. 

Th roughout the year, institute director 

David Beach continued to participate on 

local planning committees and to off er his 

input on land use, transportation planning 

and smart growth issues. He was also 

asked by Gov. Ted Strickland to serve on 

a statewide planning group through the 

Ohio Department of Transportation. Work 

also continued on GreenCityBlueLake.org, 

the primary communication vehicle 

for the region’s green community. 

GreenCityBlueLake Institute staff moved 

to permanent offi ce space at the Museum 

near the end of the fi scal year.

two staff members to work 

on the GreenCityBlueLake 

Institute’s climate project,

Renewing human health 

The Museum’s recent mergers with 

HealthSpace Cleveland and EcoCity 

Cleveland have positioned it to have a 

major impact on health and health education 

within the region. Th roughout this fi scal 

year, we developed programming, events and 

exhibitions that explored the connections 

between human health and the other aspects 

of the Museum’s work. 

We incorporated the educational programs 

once off ered by HealthSpace Cleveland 

into the programming options for schools, 

Museum members and the general public. 

Notable among these were Health on Wheels, 

an outreach program taking health education 

into area schools; and Junior Medical Camp, 

a series of weeklong programs for children in 

grades 3 to 10 off ered during the summers 

of 2007 and 2008. More than 22,000 

students were engaged by Health on Wheels 

programs. Junior Medical Camp gave 193 

students the chance to explore the many career 

opportunities available in the medical fi eld, 

conduct in-depth experiments in a laboratory 

and engage in thought-provoking discussions. 

On Saturday, March 1, we hosted 

“Health Fair for Humans,” at which 

participants could receive free health 

screenings and health-related information. 

More that 20 exhibitors from throughout 

Northeast Ohio participated, off ering 

information on exercise, nutrition, physical 

wellness and mental well-being. 

Th e exhibition Humans: A Field 

Guide, which ran from October 27 

through April 20 in Kahn Hall, was the 

fi rst in a series of exhibitions that explores 

the connection between human health and 

natural history. It tackled the fundamental 

question, “What is a human?” 

Using video, specimens from the collections 

and hands-on activities, the exhibition explored 

the human condition through the lens of 

evolution. As it moved through progressively 

more advanced traits that defi ne us as a species 

— for example, big brains and bipedalism — it 

pointed out their implications for our health as 

a species, good and bad. 

In May 2008, the Museum hired Dr. 

Linda Spurlock to be director of human health. 

She brings experience as a college professor, 

anthropologist, archaeologist, forensic facial 

reconstruction expert and scientifi c illustrator 

to this newly created position. 

Spurlock’s primary task is to link human 

health and natural history, something 

that has never been attempted at a natural 

history museum. She’ll explore potential 

collaborations with local universities and 

health institutions and work on ways to 

improve the “health literacy” — the ability 

to read, understand and act on health 

care information — of Northeast Ohio’s 

residents. She’ll also take an active role in 

the interpretive master planning process for 

the Museum, helping to incorporate human 

health information where appropriate. 

In June 2008, the Museum launched 

its Wellness@Work Awards program. Th is 

rebirth of HealthSpace’s “Healthy 50”

Recovering and restoring 

regional biodiversity 

The Museum’s conservation eff orts 

are focused within the Center for 

Conservation & Biodiversity. Its 

personnel conduct fi eldwork, identify and 

work to protect rare natural communities 

in Northern Ohio through the Natural 

Areas Program, and provide conservation 

information to public and private 

landowners. 

Th e center is one of the primary sources 

of information on rare plant occurrences 

in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Th is 

year, staff ers discovered more than 40 new 

rare plant occurrences in Ohio and 40 

in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Museum 

staff mapped all rare plant species, natural 

community types and invasive species 

on Gull Point Peninsula at Presque Isle 

in Pennsylvania. Several new rare-plant 

records were made during the survey, 

which was funded by the Pennsylvania 

Natural Heritage Program. 

Occasionally, Museum personnel 

fi nd so many occurrences of a rare plant 

species that it becomes obvious that it is 

not actually rare. At the February 2008 

Ohio Rare Plant Committee Meeting in 

Columbus, Museum staff recommended 

that six plants be deleted from the Ohio 

Rare Plant List. Five were approved for 

removal from the list. 

Where there are rare plants there are 

rare habitats and, often, property worth 

protecting. Th is fi scal year, the Natural 

Areas Program acquired 180 acres of 

property containing rare habitats. 

• Ironwood (42 acres): In July 2007, 

Northeast Ashtabula Preserves 

Stewardship Committee Chairman 

Milton Rutter sold Ironwood, his 

seepage swamp acreage, to the 

Museum. Th e addition enlarged the 

North Kingsville Sand Barrens to 174 

acres and protected a full mile of the 

Lake Warren Beach Ridge. 

• Grimm Fen (76.8-acre easement): 

In August 2007, Richard and Sue 

Grimm conveyed a conservation 

easement on their wetland in Newbury 

Township to the Museum and Western 

Reserve Land Conservancy. Grimm 

Fen is a glacial fen dominated by 

speckled alder, red osier dogwood 

and silky willow. 

• Baum Tract (56 acres): On May 18, 

2008, the Natural Areas Division 

dedicated the Baum Tract on Conneaut 

Creek. Th e tract was named after 

William Baum, in honor of his 

lifelong passion for the preservation of 

ecologically signifi cant natural areas. Th e 

property connects the existing Blakeslee/ 

Barrows Preserve and Richardson Tract 

to the Hubbard Easement, protecting 

400 acres of continuous forest along 

Conneaut Creek. 

• Flint Tract (5 acres): Th e Flint Tract 

increased the size of Kingsville Swamp 

Preserve to 92 acres. It was purchased 

with funding matched one-to-one by 

Th e Kent H. Smith Charitable Trust, 

which in December 2007 pledged 

$426,000 in matching funds for fi ve 

parcels within Geneva Swamp or 

additions to Kingsville Swamp. 

As the fi scal year ended, the Museum 

was fi nalizing the purchase of the 50-acre 

Steiner Property at the Grand River 

Terraces Preserve and the 80-acre Orkin 

Tract, 57-acre Glasky Property and 11-acre 

Cuccaro Property at Geneva Swamp.

Th e removal of invasive Phragmites at 

Mentor Marsh has created more suitable 

habitat for rare birds at this Museum 

natural area and state nature preserve. 

Several sightings of Le Conte’s Sparrow 

and Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow were 

recorded at the marsh. Th e Le Conte’s 

is considered one of the rarest and most 

diffi cult-to-fi nd birds in North America.

both during and after their lives, have been Kent and 

Thelma Smith. Their legacy continues through The Kent H. 

Smith Charitable Trust, which helped make possible the 

purchase of portions of the Geneva and Kingsville swamps

OrthoPediatrics 

Scientists from around the world 

visit the Museum to study its 

collections for research purposes. 

Frequently, their destination is the Physical 

Anthropology Department’s Hamann- 

Todd Osteological Collection. As the 

largest modern human skeletal collection 

in the world, it is particularly valuable to 

medical device companies. 

Th is fi scal year, with the help of Case 

Western Reserve University, the Museum 

took an important step in securing the 

collection’s future. CWRU’s Technology 

Transfer Offi ce drew up a licensing 

framework that compels for-profi t 

companies using the collection to either 

pay a licensing fee upfront or royalties on 

future product sales. A portion of the funds 

generated by this policy will support the 

collection’s curation. 

One of the fi rst companies to work 

within this licensing framework was 

OrthoPediatrics. Th is Warsaw, Indianabased 

fi rm specializes in pediatric 

orthopedic products. It secured rights 

to access the Hamann-Todd Collection’s 

pediatric skeletons and scan specimens 

with a laser scanner. OrthoPediatrics will

use the data to design medical devices for 

children and small-statured adults. 

Also this fi scal year, Museum curators 

continued to pursue research and fi eldwork 

locally and in locations around the world. In 

July 2007, Curator of Physical Anthropology 

Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie announced that an 

unusually successful fi eld season at the Woranso- 

Mille study area in Ethiopia earlier in the year 

had yielded evidence that could shed new light 

on the relationship between the ancient hominids 

Australopithecus anamensis and Australopithecus 

afarensis. Haile-Selassie returned to Ethiopia for a 

sixth fi eld season in January 2008. 

In July and August 2007, Coordinator 

of Research and Curator of Vertebrate 

Paleontology Dr. Michael Ryan had a 

productive fi eld season in Mongolia. Th e 

expedition he was co-leading collected fossils 

of what may be a new large lizard and an 

Oviraptor on a nest of eggs. Th e latter fossil 

appeared to be complete. 

Also during the summer of 2007, Vertebrate 

Paleontology Department staff and volunteers 

recovered what may be a new species of 

Titanichthys, a large marine placoderm that swam 

over the Cleveland region during the Devonian 

Period, from a site on the Rocky River. 

Director of Science and Curator of 

Invertebrate Zoology Dr. Joe Keiper analyzed 

entomological evidence for three cases of 

human death at the Cuyahoga County 

Coroner’s Offi ce. One analysis was highlighted 

in an episode of the real-life investigative 

television series Crime 360 on A&E. 

Curator of Vertebrate Zoology Dr. Tim 

Matson and his staff completed a fi eld 

inventory begun in early March 2006 of 

amphibian species reproducing in 30 ponds 

within Northeast Ohio being studied for 

toxic metals. Th e inventory investigates the 

potential toxicity of these metals to two species 

of amphibian known to be sensitive to them 

and known to be declining at these sites. 

Th e Department of Archaeology fi eld 

school, under the direction of Curator and 

Head of Archaeology Dr. Brian Redmond with 

the assistance of Brian Scanlan, took place at the 

Burrell Orchard site in Sheffi eld Village, Lorain

County. Th e four-week excavation uncovered 

the well-preserved remains of a 4,000-year old 

Native American settlement. Th e fi eld school 

program was supported in part by grants 

from Th e Albert G. and Olive H. Schlink 

Foundation and Th e Laub Foundation. 

Curator of Ornithology Dr. Andy Jones 

continued to build relationships with many of 

the birding-related organizations in the area, 

both as a guest speaker and active member. In 

addition, he pursued research projects on the 

evolutionary history of birds, particularly species 

found in Appalachia and the Philippines. 

In preparation for future lunar 

missions, engineers at NASA Glenn 

Research Center consulted with 

Curator of Mineralogy Dr. David 

Saja about the abrasive and adhesive 

properties of lunar dust (small mineral 

fragments), which pose signifi cant 

technical issues for lunar exploration. 

More information about the 

Museum’s collections became Webaccessible 

this fi scal year. Th e Museum’s 

Invertebrate Paleontology Collection 

database became searchable online, 

off ering access to basic data on specimens 

in that department’s collection.

In 1956, the Museum purchased the majority of the 

open water, western and northwestern shoreline of 

Fern Lake, creating the Museum’s fi rst natural area 

and protecting what is now one of only three highquality 

tamarack bogs remaining in Ohio. In 1995, 

the Museum acquired the southern shoreline, which 

contains the most signifi cant bog mat community. 

This publication was printed on paper produced 

from 100 percent recycled post-consumer 

waste, without chlorine bleach and with wind 

power. Only soy inks were used. Please pass this
