God does allow us to use things of the world in our serviceunto Him. But we must be careful when we employ the things of this worldin the service of God. Their use must be covered by prayer and consecration.We cannot be flippant and careless. It was not long before the saidinstruments of Egypt were used in the idolatrous worship of the molten calf.Joshua thought the sound he heard was the sound of war. But Mosesproperly discerned that the sound was associated with dancing unto devils. Itis always dangerous when Christians use the things of this world. use this world , as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.(1Cor 7:31)Drums are never mentioned in the Scriptures in respect of worship unto God.While the timbrel was used on occasions of rejoicing and celebration such asbanquets or victory over an enemy (as when Miriam and the women playedthe timbrels after the defeat of the Egyptians) the timbrel was never used inthe temple service. The only percussion instrument mentioned as part of thetemple service is the cymbal. It was not used to create a beat but toaccentuate certain points in a song. The percussion instruments of the oldTestament made light sounds not the fracas one hears today. Drums are adominant part of music today. However, the beating of drums has alwaysbeen associated with hedonism and the worship of idols and demons. Whenchildren were offered up as sacrifices to idols such as Moloch and they werepassed through the fire the drums were played to drown out the cries of thescreaming children.An equally if not more sinister instrument than the drum has appeared on thescene in the twentieth century. It may very well turn out to be Satan’smasterpiece in the array of Jubal’s instruments he uses to captivate andbewitch souls, including naive, undiscerning and worldly Christians. I referto the abominable, ubiquitous electronic bass guitar.The electronic bass guitar was invented in the 1930s and has been massproduced since the 1950s. It gave great impetus to the sinful music genreknown as rock music. The electronic bass guitar is found in almost everystyle of music today including rock, metal, pop, punk rock, country, reggae,blues, jazz and of course so-called gospel music. There is hardly a piece ofrecorded music without it. Live performances by various artistes almostalways have the bass featured. It establishes the beat in conjunction withdrums and many times without the drums.The electronic bass guitar cannot be heard unless it is plugged into anamplifier and speaker. It can be amplified to just about any volume withoutfeedback. In places where parties are thrown the droning, annoying sound ofthe bass can be heard a considerable distance away (sometimes well overhalf a mile). It dominates and drowns out everything else. The bass guitaremits low frequency waves which are not as easily dissipated as higherfrequency waves. They will travel around a column and not be deflected offit. Low frequencies can fill spaces and saturate them, causing vibrations to
